YY to everything that Geekmum has said sarah, but also please please don't worry that you're rod-making; I co-slept with DS through the whole 3-6month growth-spurt hell as it was the only way to make sure any of us got any sleep at all and I just kind of slowly weaned him off it once he was 6 months and eating more. By the time he was having proper big meals, three times a day (round about 8-9mo) he started sleeping through, although we had to help a bit and I went cold turkey on the night feeds once I was sure that he was getting enough calories from his solids.

This time is renowned for being really tough and I think lots of babies have a regression before they're weaned. Solids don't always totally do the job but once you know they're getting most of the calories from food then you can start doing a bit of sleep training if that's what you want to do.

It is so very very tough and I really sympathise. I remember around about this time with DS, sitting on the stairs and howling when DH was getting ready to go to work. I told him that he couldn't go, he would have to phone in sick, and that if he left the house then I was leaving as well. I refused to hold DS and I just didn't want anything to do with him after having had 5 months of bugger all sleep.

And Geekmum, I forgot to reply to your post where you said about leaving the house at 4am one morning; I did that too with DS! I actually got in the car and got half way to my mum's before having a massive attack of conscience and turning around. I'm really glad your formula's doing the job. Are you still BFing as well?

candr · 11/02/2012 16:31

Sarah -I sympathise as I often find it easier to get sleep with DS in bed rather that getting him up and putting him down especially as he seems to be teething or growth spurt, whatever it is he won't stop eating.
Started on proper food now, had rice for a few days but it has made no difference with sleep so had some stew last night and tried ham and some banana at lunch today. We are mainly doing BLW but did spoonfeed some of it and will see how it goes. It feels like my milk must be skimmed too.
Jabs all done here so teething is def the next frustration, am going to let him chew on a toothbrush so he gets used to the feeling before he needs teeth cleaned. Does anyone have info on single jabs for MMR as don't want the whole lot in one go but not sure how to get them seperately?
Well done to those who have been coping on their own, I know it can feel never ending sometimes but you have to make a bit of time for yourself each day to keep your sanity (I used to be live in nanny 4y,2y,3m) am slightly dreading doing this with a toddler in tow when I do decide to have no 2.

sarahseager · 11/02/2012 16:33

Thanks so much feralgirl and geekmum. I just needed reminding that it's all normal at this stage as it feels so hard sometimes! The tiredness has just made me lose faith in my own instincts I think!

Have just bought some weaning pots and I'm off home to try lo with the sweet potato!

Wishing you all wonderful evenings. Also wanted to say that those of you who were home alone for a few days without dh's / dp's are just amazing! Don't know how you did it!

sarahseager · 11/02/2012 16:36

Oh thanks also candr, our messages must have crossed. It's amazing that so many of our lo's are doing the same!

Grin at skimmed milk, I defo think mine is too!

100years · 11/02/2012 16:43

TP, that's a great little sleep there :) RE changing little wriggle bum, well, her foot goes in her mouth, she tries to turn over on the changing table, she does this whole excited thing with kicking her legs about, it's fun!

Oh Sarah, it's horrible when they take a step backwards, or seem to. I don't have a magic answer, I'm struggling at the moment with getting LO off to sleep of an evening and staying asleep, but can empathise with the frequent wakings. I think knowing others are having difficulties too helps you feel like at least it's not just me.

Geekmum, glad you had a better night, lets hope things keep improving for you.

Feral, thanks for what you have said, I also don't think you can make a rod for your back with babies, they are too little to understand, and will learn as they grown how to sleep on their own, and with the tough stage most of them seem to be going through right now, I think there is only so much you can do to 'teach' them how to sleep, I think waiting a bit is a good thing.

I must admit to having had a big old whinge at my OH last night, I'm just finding the trying to get her off to sleep and her turning over and then trying to crawl about in her cot hard work, but I know we will get back to being able to put her down for sleeping. Just takes time.

100years · 11/02/2012 16:46

candr, I think it's a great idea to get them used to the feeling of a 'toothbrush' my LO constantly is trying to gnaw on my finger, so I don't think I'll have too much trouble with it when I start.

100years · 11/02/2012 17:40

TP, is it this book that you have?

sarahseager · 11/02/2012 17:48

Thanks 100.

You are all such a lovely lot Smile xx

ssmile · 11/02/2012 17:50

sarah you have my sympathies I had horrid time with lack of sleep with DD1 do what ever suits you to get sleep at this time. My DH used to take her out of the house between 7-9pm walk around drive around anything so I could have two hours sleep before the "night shift" otherwise I couldn't function I was delirious from sleep exhaustion. This babe I'm been more relaxed and so has she. But the last few days she has refused all food, rice only wants breast milk from me and slept 7-12, 12.15-3, up at 6.30am this was best night I've had in weeks and she had only had BF milk! I too was feeling unsettled lost my confidence abit and frustrated as thought we were all ready to wean. But like most things with babies its one step forward one sideways and one back :o the thing you mentioned about twisting their heads to get to sleep both my girls have done that. They both wiggle upto the top corner of the cot, head at 45' angle almost licking the corner of the cot and then go to sleep in the most awkward looking position!

Hope the shred is going ok 100 I did L2 again today but now my tum been hurting all day the plank things I think are bit full on for me, but its really helped me tone up as I've been doing it with 3m walk daily and weight all dropped off my bum&legs. Just gotta get the wobbly mummy tum down now.

On phone and Lo crying so best go. Hope u all have better sleep tonight.

sarahseager · 11/02/2012 19:20

Thanks ssmile. I feel so much better for all the wonderful support on here!

The sweet potato went well, her face was hilarious at first but she kept asking for more. She is just now having a feed before bed and then the fun starts!

What is this shred you all speak of? Sounds like I need to get involved as breastfeeding doesn't seem to be keeping the bulge at bay anymore or maybe i'm just overindulging! Blush

QueenRunningGeekMum · 11/02/2012 19:55

Ok, first refusal of food from lo - absolutely did not want his evening rice which had carrot in it.

Shall I bin it or keep it for tomorrow? A bit Angry as I fear this may affect his night wakings. Was so hopeful with the weaning, hoping this is just a temporary blip.

sarahseager · 11/02/2012 20:17

I'm sure it is just temporary maybe he's tired? Has he had carrot before?

Not sure if you can keep rice as my box says serve within 30 mins - however I'm sure others will be along who know better than me xx

100years · 11/02/2012 20:49

Sarah, I think it's that we are all going through it, whether 'it' being sleeping difficulties, feeding problems, this that or the other, we are all going through stuff at the same time and so we all have a knowledge of how others are feeling, even if we are having different issues to someone else. I hope that makes sense. I think it's great we are all together through these stages, and I think that's why there are monthly ante and post natal groups as opposed to more general ones. this is Shred it's an exercise DVD thing, but it's super intense for quick and good results, seen some great before and after pics of people I know.

ssmile, we are the same with LO ending up in corners of her cot! Shred is going well, I say that, I've only done 2 days worth, had a break from it today. I hurt from it, but in a good way. It seems hard, like it's going to always be hard, but I know it will get easier. I said to OH it's like torture, but one that you want to carry on with. And just when you think of taking that 5 second break she says you can take if you need, she says, just 4 more and I think, well I can do 4 more then!

Geekmum, although I'm not weaning yet, my gut says I would bin it and do a fresh one tomorrow, their little tummies are only just getting used to food. Also I know rice is very funny, I have heard it's high up on the food poisoning stakes as well. Not sure if baby rice would be the same, but keeping rice is slightly dodgy for adults (has to be nuked to super high temp if reheating rice) something you can't do for babies (unless you cool it down for ages before hand) I just wouldn't risk it myself.

feralgirl · 11/02/2012 21:09

QRGM I second 100years, I wouldn't keep the rice either. Rice has it's very own special bacteria, iirc from my food hygiene cert training. And my DS has NEVER eaten carrot despite many many attempts Hmm and now goes to quite extraordinary lengths to remove even the tiniest shreds of it when I've tried to hide it in stuff! Angry

And I remember DS was a bit weird when we first started weaning, he wouldn't eat if he was (a) too tired as Sarah said or (b) weirdly if he was too hungry and fretful about needing milk. He needed to be nicely chilled and relaxed in order to go about the stressful task of eating solids, for some reason!

Sarah the other popular exercise option is to join the Couch to 5K runners (managed and overseen by our very own QueenRunningGeekMum Smile) I run but haven't posted on the thread for ages, it has made a huge difference to my emotional state just getting out of the house on my own for half an hour three times a week.

TP wriggly DD's nappy changes are quite entertaining; she puts her feet in her mouth and bares everything Shock which does make it easier to clean her up. I've got a cot mobile on the changing table though which means that she's got something to look at to stop her rolling over.

She is now managing to hop forwards when on all fours and can move her legs independently of each other, and she does the same with her arms, she just hasn't figured out how to coordinate all four limbs yet. It's amazing how her body shape's changed as a result though, you can really see the muscles developing in her thighs and hips and she's losing that weird top-heavy look that babies have before they start using their bottom halves properly.

100years · 11/02/2012 21:18

I think a friend of mine used to make pasta sauce, packed full of veg, but whizzed it up in a food processor so their son didn't realise they were eating all the veg.

I think our two are very similar in their movement feral:), the changing sounds very very similar, although I've not thought of the mobile above the changing table, we do have a spare, so I think I might do that. I took a pic of LO last night and looked at it earlier and thought how slim she was looking, she was only in a body suit, she's not exactly a big baby anyway(just below 25th centile), but she's slimmed a bit I think. Must be all the moving around she is doing.

My LO is now able to sit, although it's not for long, she can sit without being supported. We did have a slight falling backwards/banging head incident the other day after she had been sat for ages playing with some toys, which I felt bad about as I hadn't got there in time, but she was fine after a cuddle.

Oh and I had a lie in this morning :) I prompted OH last night about needing a lie in, so this morning he got up and took LO until I woke up naturally, which was only about 1hr 15 later, but I've slept till I woke up, which was good. I'll ignore the wakings in the night.

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans · 12/02/2012 03:26

Sorry guys find it had to keep up on my phone.

Well ds has tge cold from hell, well not really it's just a normal cold but last night I ended up having hold him almost the whole night. I am shattered and over tge last week have been beginning go wonder if I am a little pnd however I also haveots to deal with so it's probably just tgat.

Further up someone mention lo smelly farts? Well that's it now girls, you've started weaning si here come tge really bad nappies Grin

tiddleypompom · 12/02/2012 08:38

Just a quickie - DS has one eye that looks watery and he is rubbing it. I suspect conjunctivitis but it isn't red or crusty/sticky. I will go to GP on Monday and just bathe in warm water today. Just wanted to know if it could alternatively be an irritant? We are putting cream on his cheeks due to dryness, which can be tricky as he turns his face to get our finger in his mouth (!) when we apply. Is it possible that dome cream has made it's way into his eye through general fist exploration? Do you think I should be worried at all?

Thanks all. Have banked idea about mobile over changing table in case DS decides to move ever in the near future!

tiddleypompom · 12/02/2012 08:39

some cream...

tiddleypompom · 12/02/2012 11:06

Oh and yes to the book link 100

100years · 12/02/2012 11:36

Loves. I had exactly the same thing last week with my LO, spent a few nights dozing while she slept on me. Ended up propping the mattress up (blankets underneath one end) and she slept there then.

Thanks TP. Re the eye, sounds possibly like cream irritated it. E had conjunctivitis and her eye was a bit pink and had gunk in it, like when you get sleep but it was wet as opposed to dry, and when you wiped it away it came back quickly. I squirted breast milk in her eye. Also cooled some boiled water and wiped eye off with cotton wool, new bit of cotton wool each time you wipe. When did it start?

tiddleypompom · 12/02/2012 12:04

Thanks 100. It isn't pink and no gunk, but will monitor as DS keeps rubbing it. I am doing regular cotton wool and warm water wiping. I only noticed it yesterday - spotted a tear but he hadn't been crying. I then noticed the rubbing - he does this when tired too so hadn't put two and two together previously.

100years · 12/02/2012 13:20

Hope that the cleaning of it means it comes to nothing. E does the rubbing eye, tear thing too when tired. There was definite gunk when E had her conjunctivitis.

ssmile · 12/02/2012 13:27

tp the GP DR told me if you pull the lid down gently and its red with green gunk its conjunctervitus if its just green gunk it can be nasal congestion escaping out the eyes. Our DD1 had lots of this and I had to be sure as nursery wouldn't take her with conjunctervitus as it spreads fast amongst toddlers.
Rice definitely bin it as 100 and feralgirl are right its awful for bacteria growth. I did weeks managers food hygiene course its the worst thing for food poisoning.
Sorry short reply off out to wear out DD1 who doing my nut today :)

100years · 12/02/2012 14:17

AW ssmile, I hope you tire her out enough so you get some rest later. I too didn't take E swimming when she had conjunctivitis as I wasn't sure if it could spread in the pool. I haven't done a food hygiene course, however I have had serious food poisoning in the past which affected me for 6 months, and learnt a lot about this and that through research into it and other types of food poisoning, so I am very wary about things, maybe sometimes a little too much, but I'd rather it be that way.

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans · 12/02/2012 14:56

Ds gets this with colds too, defo eye bogeys Grin
