trudy have you considered dairy intolerance? It kicked in with S at about 2 weeks old and he was in agony. It wasn't too hard for me to drop dairy for a fortnight and he was a completely different baby. A friend suggested it, the HV/GP just said he was a whingy baby, which he totally wasn't, he was obviously in pain but they just don't listen. I didn't drop dairy til 12 weeks and about a week after I did we got our first smile, I feel so guilty that I didn't know to try earlier and save him those 3 months of sheer agony :( (The hard bit was staying off dairy for months and months and months!)

Chulita · 01/12/2011 12:26

Yep, S got his jabs yesterday and he cried but has been fine since, I'm waiting for next week when she said the reaction would kick in. L was awful within an hour of her MMR though so he's nothing like her (thank the heavens)

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 01/12/2011 13:50

Chulita that's fab news about the house :)

W doesn't say anything to the tree Trudy - He tried to take the baubles off, gets told no a few times and then gives up.

He hasn't had a nap today! He fell asleep a minute from home on the way home from the supermarket so I put him straight to bed. He kicked his mattress and chattered away for the next 45 minutes when I gave up and brought him down!

viksam · 01/12/2011 14:04

ahhh Trudy it's lovely to hear how things are going for u and your family. It's my last day today and I have managed to fit an antenatal appointment in, so I'm sat in the hospital waiting for them to check last weeks scan and to see how we are going to progress. Poor f, definitely need to pursue it, d has colic for 14 weeks and looking back I don't feel I did enough to help him, I should have been more proactive with the doc, definitely will be this time around.

kkfairybrains · 01/12/2011 15:05

Hi!
Chul yeah im kept busy thankfully but then trying to keep everything else going I rarely get the chance to even read to catch up with you all anymore! Still thinking about you all though
Tsc poor frankie :( and poor you. Really hope its not pneumonia :( keep us posted
We'll definately be doing santa! I love it all and don't have a problem with E believing in it! Im so excited for christmas this year! We've got her a kitchen and a dressing table with a toy hairdryer and straightener and brush and stuff as she is constantly trying to do her hair with mine! We got her a toy shopping trolley too and mega blocks! Will get her a few little stocking fillers too. We're going to my mums this year and we always open all our presents together in the morning, my aunts for brekkie, few more visits to peoples houses, mass then dinner at 3ish.

E is doing good. She has such a lovely little personality but can be a madam like me by times too. Getting loads of chat out of her. Her newest word is Dorothy- my mums name. I think its hilarious that she can say it!.
Right have an hour or 2 free so better get some washing and ironing done and dinner prepared. Really cant be arsed though!

tsc hoping he's home soon

Trudy G had silent reflux, the first thing my GP suggested was cutting dairy out of my diet as I was bfing. I did that (difficult for a hardened tea drinker like myself but I got used to the rice milk!). It takes about 2 wks to see any effect. I think it helped a bit but not loads , my gp then put G on ranitidine which was a liquid I just syringed into her mouth twice a day. Sometimes they give you infant gaviscon first but my GP gave me the stronger stuff. It helped a lot and then she sort of outgrew it by about 5 months.

Summer xmas seems normal now, it's all very relaxed and nice. A is watching Christmas films etc now so she gets a bit confused because of course most Christmas films, books etc have snow in - she said to me the other day "It will snow on Christmas Eve" and it NEVER snows in Auckland even in winter so it's a bit confusing for her. Next winter we may take her to moutains abotu 4 hrs drive away where there is snow so we can have a weekend playing in it.

DesperateHousewife21 · 01/12/2011 19:03

Tsc- really sorry about F, hope he can go home soon. What does a shadow on the lung mean? I've heard of it before but never fully understood it.

wss I can't imagine a hot Xmas! Then again it's not exactly freezing here but cold enough.

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 01/12/2011 19:15

Hope he's doing better soon tsc

A friend of mine's 6 week old has just been diagnosed with a cow's milk intolerance (she's bf too) - it's amazingly common. I told her that cake a friend of mine thinks dairy is the root of all evil Grin Like a lot of vegetarians she relies heavily on dairy so it will be quite a steep move for her to adjust to dairy-free

Well W has been incredibly happy today. I only remembered as I put him to bed that he hasn't had a nap today! He did fall asleep the second his head hit the pillow mind, poor lad must be shattered.

Off out for an Indian with my friend soon. Can't wait I'm bloomin' starving

MalibuStac · 01/12/2011 20:20

Hiya ladies, bookmarking as I lost the thread :(

viksam · 01/12/2011 20:27

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm curry!! Have a good one mylife no nap for W and he was ok with it, wow! D was also quite happy when he came home, he and dh has a lovely half hour together.
tsc man thats such a shame for u and F, hope things get better quickly, hospital is a horrid place to hang around, do u have a room to urselves?

D is really starting to repeat words now, he says loads more than he did a week ago, very strange how they make a sudden and noticable leap in development. I got a bit paranoid about his teeth and how many he had so i rechecked and its defo 16, didnt realize that was a lot untill all ur reactions!
kk glad ur busy, that sounds so cute what ur getting for xmas, i feel mean as D hasnt got any big stuff, he's got a wooden train set from ikea, a duplo shop(very apt i thought!) only cos it was reduced t £13! hes having the duplo caravan from my brother and sister and dad made him the sand pit some months back, see fb for pics! but im sure they will get him some bits and bobs. Doesnt sound much does it.
chu glad S was ok, D didnt have a reaction, not on the day or with in the three weeks my nurse said so lets hope he doesnt at all. How is he sleeping now, is he still waking early?
D had a shocking night last night, just kept crying out, i went in to settle him and unusually he really sobbed when i went out, that happened twice so i stayed with him till he went off to sleep, he obviously didnt want to be alone, im taking a leaf out of cakes parenting book and just giving him what he needs, in a few weeks i wont be able to so much so i may as well while i can.

Chulita · 01/12/2011 20:47

viks S has a duplo transporter and that's it. We're not getting him anything else and my family aren't big present givers so he might get something small from my parents and perhaps one of my brothers but that'll be it. I wouldn't worry about it tbh!
His sleep is hit and miss really, he's not settled into a routine yet.

mlic man alive! no nap? I can tell just by the pitch of S's wail how close it is to 12 o'clock Grin

memphis83 · 01/12/2011 21:21

chulita glad S hasnt had a reaction yet, fingers crossed he will be ok.
mlic enjoy your curry!
tsc fingers crossed you will all be home soon, poor boy :(
viksam I asked for money and clothes for L but hardly anyone has listened, they dont get he hardly plays with toys he is happier with a book he is only just playing with his birthday presents!

I have a swollen eye, looks like a stye (sp?) been for a manicure today, and L has ended up in emergency doctors, he has the runs so bad as soon as its coming out its leaking everywhere, we went xmas shopping and in John Lewis buying my netbook he farted (wished I was in Primark and not a 'posh' shop) dh was in changing room half an hour, used half a pack of wipes and leaked over jeans, vest, t shirt, jumper, coat and pushchair! so the poor boy ended up coming out in just his poo covered coat! that cut our shopping short so no xmas lights and no meal out! He has finally cut a molar, but weirdly still only has the bottom 2 teeth, and doc says if he continues pooping like he is in 2 days may have to look at hospital as he hardly drinks fluid.

Trudyla · 02/12/2011 04:03

Ohhh, Christmas smileys Xmas Smile

How was the curry night out mlic? Xmas Envy

viks Enjoy your time off. The list of presents for D sounds huge to me, so I wouldn't worry. They don't really "get it" yet anyway, so we can get away with not buying much Xmas Grin

tsc Hope things will improve soon!

chul Glad S didn't have the same reaction. Fingers crossed he'll be totally fine with it.

chul and wss My midwife has suggested it might be milk intolerance but has just told me to cut out proper milk. She said it's OK to still have chocolate and cheese and such. So I've been having oat milk for the last week or so but have continued to eat vast amounts of some chocolate. Do you think I should cut out all dairy for two weeks?

It seems like over here they don't want to medicate babies at all and just tell me that he will grow out of it and it's entirely normal. Bollocks to that.

Horrendous evening with F. He screamed and cried for hours and I have no idea how to help him. He woke up M several times who kept crying then. Me and DP felt so helpless and ended up shouting at each other too, cos we had no idea what else to try. Still don't. Xmas Sad He seems hungry but pukes it all up as soon as he's eaten, then screams with tummy cramps, then eats again, pukes up, etc. And why is it always worse in the evening?

Sorry for the whinge. He's up again. Gotta go.

Woodlands · 02/12/2011 08:21

urgh that sounds grim Trudy. It definitely sounds like it might be worth cutting out all milk products for a couple of weeks (even going so far as to check labels and avoid every little bit). Then if it does help you can always try to reintroduce stuff gradually. I agree, dairy intolerance seems incredibly common - I have several friends who had to cut it right out while BFing - at least one of them has been able to relax it a lot more as her baby has got older.

J's eyes are still not better, grrrrr. We had planned to wake him at 7.45 today so that DH could take him to nursery if he was better, but I was up with him briefly at 2.30 and his eyes felt (in the dark!) very crusty then. So I am working until he wakes up, and then if he is OK for nursery (which I doubt) I will walk him in and then head to work. Otherwise DH will be done by 12ish and will take over. Trouble is I kind of need to go into the office today to pick something up. I'm tempted to go in with J this morning and then work from home this afternoon.

must get on really!

DesperateHousewife21 · 02/12/2011 08:25

mlisc how did W sleep last night after not having a nap?

D slept til half 7 this morning, he woke at 10ish then 11 something and midnight so I'm not surprised he was tired.

I'm going to an indoor soft play this morning but no plans this afternoon I might take D to the park if it doesn't rain.

WhatSheSaid · 02/12/2011 08:40

Trudy the eating then puking then being in pain sounds like it could be reflux...is it just the evenings or is it all the time? Colic seems to hit in the evenings (and seems to be incurable, you just have to wait it out). Reflux can be at any time of the day. Poor old G used to get it worst at 4am, I remember sitting up with her while she used to do this weird gasping/retching thing...

If it is reflux (what other symptoms does he have?) the things I remember maybe helping (other than cutting out dairy and getting some decent medication) are:

Keeping him upright for 30 mins after each feed while it's digested.
Propping one end of the cot up so he's sleeping on a slight slope.
Keeping upright as much as poss e.g in bouncy chair, baby swing.

This is a website I got quite a lot of info from www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz/ it was good on symptoms and possible solutions...I did find the medication was the thing that helped most though...and she was off it by about 5 months as it all cleared up pretty much by then.

tsc how is F today? I was watching Donwton Abbey 2 nights ago and then last night Benidorm was on so I've been seeing quite a lot of your cousin on TV here Grin.

Today we've met up with friends at a park this morning, then just mooched around the house this afternoon, dh is out at his Christmas work do at the mo.

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 02/12/2011 09:18

Agree it sounds very refluxy trudy. Good advice from wss - I would go back to the docs and insist on medication if I were you.

He slept badly dh. I didn't get home until midnight, he was up crying his eyes out at 12.50 so I brought him downstairs. He was fast asleep after a few efforts to settle him when ds1 came out of his room at 2.20am, he was crying calling out for me (he was up when I went out and I think he was scared I hadn't come back) so I spent the rest of the night in there with him. Shattered.

Oh no, so sorry to hear that TSC. Thinking of you all.

Have made it into the office!

CakeandRoses · 02/12/2011 11:07

Oh tsc, that's shit. Will text you shortly.

Woodlands, really feel for you on the eye front. Such a pain.

Mlic did you make those apple muffins? Just made them again as they're so nice

How does it feel to be a lady of leisure (!) vik?

Trudy it def sounds like reflux and/or dairy intolerance. Try everything wss suggests as that should really help. Plus a dummy if he doesn't have one. It maffisly helps wash the acid down. A didn't have one til about 7 weeks until I read that it could help reflux and it really did.

The other thing I did was move to block feeding. This will only be helpful if you're bf (obv), have a strong letdown, flow or too much milk - all applied to me and block feeding was life changing!

I didn't find medication useful. The gaviscon is useless IMO and a pain with bf and once I'd done the stuff above A didn't need anything stronger.

Sorry about brevity, can't stand the iPad

DesperateHousewife21 · 02/12/2011 12:00

Tsc- oh no sounds like you're having a really shit time of it atm :(

Mlisc- sorry you had a rubbish night, they obv still need their daytime sleep then. No wonder D never has a good night with the little sleep he has in the day. Hope he's better for you tonight.

D is asleep now after moaning most of the time at the soft play. Hope he gets enough sleep.

Chulita · 02/12/2011 12:27

trudy ime you have to cut everything that has dairy out. S was so sensitive he reacted if I had a cup of tea with milk in it or a mini cheddar. Gaviscon gave him horrific constipation so he was then in pain with that. I got Ranitidene for him but never used it because cutting out all dairy worked, I'd rather not fill their little bodies with medication if there's an alternative. I'm a huge dairy eater so it was very hard to start with, esp over Christmas but seeing the difference it made in him was totally worthwhile. It won't hurt you to give it a go, 2 weeks with no dairy and just see how he is.
I also put S to sleep on his front from quite early on, if I didn't he'd bring up his feed and choke on it...ah, the memories Confused

tsc thinking of you both and hoping F starts getting his stats up.

viksam · 02/12/2011 13:08

tsc that sucks man, hope ur ok, hope u have got plenty of support. Poor F, how is he in himself? Wish we could help in some way, hopefully our collective thoughts will help in some way x
mylife ur night sounds poo, hows w today, have they gone to nursery? What u up to?
woods glad u made it in, those eyes have been poorly for a while now, what does the doc say?
trudy D didnt have reflux from what i am aware but as i said did suffer from really bad colic, the only thing that helped in the end was a baby swing, we brought it out of desperation and it worked wonders, he slept in the swing in the living room in the evening untill he was about three months old when i gradually started moving him into his cot.
cake its just a normal friday today so the feeling of no work wont kick in till tuesday when D goes to the cm, i have such mixed feelings about leaving work, its very difficult when you have built up a team and an environment to just walk away for 9 months and not feel a bit sad about it. I know i have other much much more important things to occupy myself with but just for now i feel a bit odd about it all.

memphis83 · 02/12/2011 13:58

tsc hope things improve soon.
mlic shame your night ended with a rubbish nights sleep.

L is still shitting for Britain, he looks very pale today but is still happy enough, he is watching the Gruffalo DVD at the moment. he has a box of paints and sponges shaped as animals and he kept throwing the sponges at the dog so I told him if the dog chewed them I would put them in the bin! our bin is now one that is in a cupboard, and he had put them all in the bin! very cute! he now says Santa and Ho Ho Hoooooooo!
I bought myself an early christmas present of the last Harry Potter! and we are going late night shopping in the next town tonight so we can see all the lights and the brass band etc, but first I have to finally collect my motorbike and bring it home, im going to freeze! its 3 degrees out there!
