Silly brain: eligible

GlaikitFizzogOnaNeepyLantern · 11/10/2011 13:00

Arch - I can answer! Whoop! Not often I can answer a question on here!! The school year enrollment works from 1st March to end of Feb, so if you are a march baby you are oldest in your year, Feb babies are the youngest. You can defer for a year if born after December (I think, maybe I don;t know the anser after all!!) So if you defer for a year they would be the eldest in their class by a whole year in some cases!

From what I can work out from the English system (all gleaned from MN) You have reception from 4 years old (full time??), the scottish equivalent would be pre school nursery which is 2.5 days a week and can be taken at a nursery attached to a school (usually your catchment primary) or at a childminer or private nursery. Year 1 = Primary 1 for children turning 5 after 1st march that year, is your first year "at school".

Does that make sense??

GlaikitFizzogOnaNeepyLantern · 11/10/2011 13:07

Oh jusr saw you started a thread, yep I agree with what the others on there have said your two will be amoungst the oldest in their class! :o as will all the Aprilites if they go to school in Scotland!!

architien · 11/10/2011 14:12

Ah good news then :)
Thank you. It's so different from what I grew up with further south!

architien · 11/10/2011 14:13

BTW ;) I like your new seasonal name Fizz

GlaikitFizzogOnaNeepyLantern · 11/10/2011 20:01

Thanks Arch! Cheering on Scotland tonight, but its not looking good for a win against the World Champions Spain! Ever hopeful us Scots though!!

DairyBeetle · 11/10/2011 20:19

We made it to the end of the day! Yay! Now where is that ASDA delivery with my Wine ???

But today (for me) wasn't too bad, like you GGY I like my job and work with a good bunch of people so even though it's horribly busy I enjoyed being back. Poor S though is still full of cold (lovely neon green snot stage) which is really messing with his feeding. He also seems to be sleeping off the cold so is suddenly dropping to sleep during the day. It's quite a shock as he's usually very loud and avoids naps!

I'm not sure how successful it's been getting milk into him while at nursery I can't decide whether to persevere with the sippy cup or try a bottle again. Or maybe introduce some puree food so that I know that he's at least getting something. Gah! All too much to think about!

Cycle I'll join you with the wriggly, snot filled baby (though mine waited till nearer 5am thankfully!).

Arch yay for the FF!!

Fizz I'm going to get a play pen, we have an open plan living room/kitchen and a downstairs shower room with nowhere to fit safety gates so it's our only option once S is mobile. I don't intend to use it all the time, just when I need to do something without 'help' go to the loo

Ali fingers crossed DS1 gets a place at the school.

GsyGacheFiend · 11/10/2011 21:10

ILTMI Sad Shock. Really sorry, will now remove my foot from my mouth and go and give the DC an extra cuddle, as you've reminded me we never know what's around the corner and each day is a blessing.

As for the Guernsey question, (feel free to ask as many as you like BTW, i'm used to answering them as part of the day job). Anyone not interested in prehistoric Guernsey, please feel free to skip Grin

We have loads of prehistoric/ sites in Guernsey. The oldest site is <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.com/imgres?q=Les+Fouillages&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=au3&sa=X&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&biw=1280&bih=651&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=o1jR35h-SFmjoM:&imgrefurl=sites.google.com/site/gsyeducationresources/pupil-area/vale&docid=K8pVN1dVbsdGbM&w=640&h=480&ei=Z5yUTrOsAtDysgb8n4nHBQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=532&vpy=155&dur=2484&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=118&ty=140&page=1&tbnh=145&tbnw=187&start=0&ndsp=17&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Les Fouillages burial mound, possibly the oldest manmade structure in Europe, built by Neolithic man around 4500BC. There are several enclosed dolmens and my favourite is Le Dehus which has the <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.com/imgres?q=le+dehus+dolmen&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=wnO&sa=X&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&biw=1280&bih=651&tbm=isch&prmd=imvnsfd&tbnid=AAh5VgoDXKAu_M:&imgrefurl=en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vale,_Guernsey&docid=Pu1P-FD4lPq0FM&w=220&h=165&ei=yZ-UTsfwFsaKswaexoTABQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=578&vpy=413&dur=60&hovh=132&hovw=176&tx=92&ty=108&page=2&tbnh=132&tbnw=176&start=15&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:15" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Le Gardien du Tombeau.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 11/10/2011 21:26

Thanks Ali.

Like the spooky name Fizzog! There's nothing wrong wit putting your lo in a playpen or travel cot if that is what keeps them safe when you aren't in the room. Tbh I would just start baby proofing the house now. Our house is still pretty much baby proofed, I just need to get ds into the habit of moving his small toys out of the way.

Glad today went well Dairy.

So, baby I has been on a nursing strike since this afternoon Hmm I have never experienced this before so I'm a bit taken aback by it tbh. Hopefully it's a short-lived thing and he will soon forget all about reacting to my nipple as if it is the anti Christ - ungrateful little shitbag Grin

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 11/10/2011 21:30

X post Gache. Give them a cuddle from me too Smile

I will have a look at your links tomorrow as I am knackered and now off to my pit.

GlaikitFizzogOnaNeepyLantern · 11/10/2011 22:04

See the thing is, we don't have room to have a playpen or travel cot up or we do, but I'd have to pole vault over it to get to the kitchen or loo or basically anywhere in the house. Baby proofing it will have to be and thats going to be a big ask too! Neither DH or I are the tidiest of people Blush we are just going to have to get better at it aren't we?

The sweet potato wasn;t as big a hit as I thought it would be tonight until a added some pear to it. He's going to have a weird pallet, it was brocolli and apple last night!! Reading my blw cookbook tonight for inspiration!!

chillikat · 11/10/2011 22:24

M seems to have decided sleeping on her front is the way to be. Babies do have a mechanism for not suffocating themselves don't they? (she was face down this morning Hmm She's currently making strange squeaks, probably developed talking in her sleep (and doing other weird stuff) like me and DH.

Fizz, I think the Annabel Karmel weaning book suggests adding sweet to savoury to get them used to the flavours. I offered sweet potato as wedges at the same time as the puree. It seems she'll shove anything in her mouth now - developed a taste for garlic and coriander naan bread tonight :o

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 11/10/2011 23:04

Fizz - you will have to babyproof Grin We didn't cover the corners of things or anything, I'm a big believer in babies learning how to properly navigate their environment. No point in home being padded, because then they just get injured the moment they step outside.
As DS1 could crawl, and then pull himself up, and then got taller - all our things got gradually higher and higher up the shelves.
We went to stay with some friends who don't have kids yet when DS1 was about a year old - it was the first time we had seen them since he could crawl and cruise. The havoc he wreaked in their living room in the first 5 minutes - they just looked at each other and went and got a massive box and packed loads of things into it Grin

ILike - neither of mine have ever gone on strike, I hope it doesn't last long! Will you try and give him water or anything or just sit it out?

I have got a blocked duct - ouch! I thought such things were supposed to be confined to the early weeks??

MrsWajs · 11/10/2011 23:05

FizzNeep there is absolutely nothing wrong with brocolli & apple!! Nor cauliflower & mango Grin Anything that R isn't too keen on I just chuck some fruit in with et voila she gobbles it down no probs!! Will worry about sweet tooth hurdles later on. Though I have been slowly rducing the amount of fruit so that it's more veg and she hasn't cottoned on yet.
Tried her with carrot sticks the other night but am beginning to wonder if she is way too used to purees and the mixed approach with BLW isn't going to work as she sucked the end right off the carrot stick and swallowed it whole almost choking in the process Blush should I continue trying her with finger foods anyway and hope she gets the chewing bit in time?

ILTMI Your last comment made me :) I'm glad I'm not the only one who refers to my LO as a shitbag from time to time

Think we might be in for a night of it here R was super grumpy before bed time and has just woken up after going down at 9 :( last time this happened she was also up at 1, 2, 5 & 7!!! DP on nights again so just me here to deal with her, she'll be coming in with me if she's up again I think. On the plus side I'm hoping it's teething related on of her bottom teeth looks like it's about to break through - wish it would loody hurry up!!

Glad those of you having first days back at work managed well! I'm doing another KIT day on Friday and then again on Monday :( Spoke to my other boss at the weekend though and I don't think I'll be doing any others except for training. Thankfully other boss is quite sensible and didn't know that idiot boss had neglected to ask me if I wanted all the shifts she'd put me down for and agreed that I could just do ones I could manage when asked.

MrsWajs · 11/10/2011 23:07

And apologies for lots of typos, looks like keyboard is on it's way out again Angry

Cyclebump · 12/10/2011 06:48

H has been sleeping face down for weeks Chilli, he just prefers it. We also have the mattress propped up slightly. I've witnessed him lifting his head to switch from looking one way to the other and he wriggles around to get comfy so I don't worry any more after obsessively checking on him every hour for the first couple of nights.

Hope things improved MrsW.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 12/10/2011 09:38

Why did that post again?? Confused

T is also a tummy sleeper and has been for about 2 months, maybe longer. He could turn his head and push himself up on his arms before we were putting him to sleep like that. If head control is fine then it is safe to do I am sure.

T went down at 8pm, but then woke at 9pm and we couldn't get him back down until midnight! He would have slept through I think, but DS1 woke up howling at 4am - he had a dream about someone taking his chocolate cake away and was completely inconsolable. Grin So I fed T and he went back down until almost 8am. He's back asleep in his buggy now.

Cyclebump · 12/10/2011 11:03

To be fair Ali, I too would cry if someone was taking my chocolate cake.

H went 8.30-1, 1.30-6. We had brekkie but then he crashed out at 8.15-9.45! he never naps that long. Wish I'd got stuff done instead of having a lie down. He's now having a rollathon that I'm encouraging as we're going out in a bit and he'll be in the buggy for a while x

GlaikitFizzogOnaNeepyLantern · 12/10/2011 11:58

I wouldn't cry if someone stole my chocolate cake........... I'd get even :o

Nothing doing today, washing and babyproofing! Weather is rubbish so everything will go in the tumbler!

My hips are giving me jip today too which doesn't help with the tidying. might just hsveti have a Brew and a sit down!

chillikat · 12/10/2011 14:35

M seems to have just fallen asleep on me without feeding Confused :o it's good to know she can do it. I'll try not to worry too much about sleeping on her front. I keep finding her right up against the bars of the cot with one arm hanging out, maybe due to still not having worked out how to roll to the right.

Mmm, chocolate cake, but it's downstairs. Maybe will try to put baby down and make a Brew too.

Starshaped · 12/10/2011 19:50

I'm having a real woe is me day today. I need to vent and then the Aprilites can hopefully kick some sense into me.

Not sure what's wrong really. I think it's probably just 5 months of broken sleep and being a bit run down but I had a right sob this afternoon. P wouldn't sleep (I could see she was knackered, why couldn't she?!) and wouldn't stop whinging, the house was a mess, it was horrid outside and I just couldn't see when or how things will get better. Very melodramatic, I know but I briefly lost all sense of perspective about the real world!

P's nighttime sleep is still distinctly average and things aren't being helped by the fact that her dreamfeed has gone to pot - I've started a thread here in Sleep if anybody has got any advice. I keep scaring myself by reading threads about much older babies who are still feeding lots in the night and can't self settle and am worrying that that'll be me in 6 months time...I'm quite a pessimistic person by nature and I hate the fact that having a baby has brought out the worst in me. Argh!

It's the not knowing that's getting at me too. If somebody could confidently look into the future and tell me that she won't be feeding in the night by Christmas (or any other date), then I think I could cope with that.

God, I'm a whinger. I told you I was feeling sorry for myself! You deserve a glass of Wine if you've got to the end of this self indulgent rant!

I've sent DH out for takeaway because I'm too lazy to cook to cheer me up. Yum!

DairyBeetle · 12/10/2011 20:11

Star we all have days where we just hit the wall so to speak. I had a miserable weekend a couple of weeks ago, blew everything out of proportion, was a PITA to live with, had a good sob at DH and everything felt better. Though I'm pretty sure that Wine and takeaway are a good cure too!

Chill we've had the arms/legs/attempt at head through the cot bars too. S sleeps on his side with his head thrown back. It looks uncomfy to me but no matter how I put him down that's the position he gets himself into!

Fizz I'll join you with the achey hips, mine have niggled the last couple of days. Hope you got your Brew and sit down.

Ali I agree with Cycle I'd cry if someone pinched my cake too!

S had his second day at nursery and he seemed much happier today (probably because he's starting to get over the worst of this horrid cold). They don't think he got much milk using the sippy cup, he was taking milk into his mouth then spitting it out again Hmm. But they did get him to eat food using a combination of finger foods and some spoon feeding. I had wanted to BLW and avoid spoon feeding but needs must and at least this way I know he's getting something in him while I'm at work.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 12/10/2011 20:12

I think we all have days like that Star, I know I do.

I'll go and read your thread, but if it's any comfort ds's dream feed has gone a bit wonky recently. He has been waking up anytime between 9.30-10, which can then cause a knock on effect for the rest of the night.

Today he has finally started to sit totally unaided, can roll both ways like a pro and he has got two top front teeth coming through, so I'm putting the wonky sleep down to that. Developmental milestones can really disturb their sleep. The best analogy I've heard is, you know when you have got so many things on your mind that you can't mentally turn off? You either can't drop off to sleep, or you wake in the night and then can't sleep again? That's what it can belike for lo's when their brain is developing. And like everything, some babies cope well with it and others don't.

This morning I feel like I had hit the sleep wall, but I often get that at least once a week. I think because I've been here before I know it will get better, I just don't know when, and I can accept that because I can't change it.

What takeaway did you get? mind you, I shouldn't be dribbling, we all had a hearty dinner. Toad in the hole with carrots and cauliflower. It was I's first proper meal and he attacked it with gusto. I was surprised how much went in actually.

BuckminsterFullerene · 12/10/2011 20:21

Oh, star, that's exactly how I've been feeling lately. I think it's the lack of sleep that's getting to me. It really helps to rant on here tho.

At the risk of jinxing things, F's suddenly started drinking much more milk from the bottle. Where he was having maybe 50ml two or three times in the day, the last 2 days he's had 100ml a go (or more). Which is more than I'm pumping. So we've just picked up some formula.

Not sure when we'll try it. Got a bit of BM in the freezer still. I am tempted to try it before bed, see if the rumours are true and he does sleep longer. But then, I'm not convinced he'll welcome the bottle at boob-o'clock.
