So we don't scare the viroids on the antenatal thread with horror stories of no sleep, chomped boobs and endless laundry or make them envious with tales of cuteness....

Hand hold to Val. it's horrid isn't it. I haven't done controlled crying as such but I have come to the conclusion that under certain circumstances me hanging around patting and stroking her at naptimes just prolongs the crying and it's actually better if I just leave her for 5 mins til she settles herself down. Hate it though. I also hate to say this but it works in that it breaks a pattern. Up til last Wednesday night dd was waking as much as your DS and more and I was on my knees with tiredness. I decided I would feed 3 hourly and no more. She woke every half hour or so and I gave her water, a dummy, cuddles, none of which she wanted. We have worked out that she was getting v v wet so have a new nappy changing routine which helps. Anyway on thurs night she just got it and we've only had one waking a night (plus a dream feed) since then.

Hope it works for your DS. These things are supposed to take 3 nights if they're going to work so only 1 more to endure.

vallinnapod · 07/02/2012 03:57

Thanks Esk. The second night was infinity easier than the first but still heartbreaking at times. Got him taking a dummy again, that and alternating with a thumb suck seemed to work. This thumb sucking thing is really recent. Not sure I entirely encourage it (as someone who would still happily suck her's at 30 odd...)

So the irony of tonight is DS has now slept from around 11pm. I am lying here wide awake with achingly full boobs! Hand expressed into the sink but not to much luck. DS has also just set his light box off (sound activated) by farting! He is by far and away louder now he is in his own room than he ever was in ours!

Eskarina · 07/02/2012 11:52

Glad it was a better night Val. Grin at the farting setting off the light box. Dd has one of those and if a bus goes past that can set it off and wake her up!

nickelhasababy · 07/02/2012 12:04

so many Qs ttl Grin
I hope your DH gets a job closer to work - knowing it's not a typo, then Thank God, you can take your DD with you! Shock
yes, she is a treasure, but hard work too! I keep looking at her and not quite believing she's real. she's now 8 weeks old, and a proper greedy chubber.
She does come to the shop with me - we came back when she was 4 weeks old. My friend did look after the shop for a week, and did an okay job (got confused about some orders though, but she was learning on the hop!), and then my holiday assistant did her christmas holidays.
We came back on the 9th jan, so we've been back 4 weeks now.
It's going alright - I've had lots of positive BFing comments, which is great (i suppose those who don't approve just don't say anything!), and lots of people assuming she's a boy just because she's wearing blue (I hadn't realised it changed your genitals! Shock)
So this week, we've been deliberately confusing by wearing both blue and pink Wink

I don't think i could do that vallinna - it would be too sad and harsh for me.
I had to leave her to cry this morning, because she was just constant (and nothing was soothing her - well, i could stop her for a few seconds then she'd start off again), i had to leave her so that I could get her in the pram and out of the door.
I put her in the pram, she screamed, and I had to put my own coat etc on, and get ready to go.

thankfully she calmed down once we were on the move.
I feel like the worst mother in the world when I have to let her cry. :(

takethatlady · 07/02/2012 12:19

Interested to hear people's strategies re: night time. We've never done CC because I am a wimp but I think whatever works! DD wakes all the time at night and it's a killer with commuting and working, etc. Lucky I have my Tuesdays and Thursdays to conk out! Sometimes i bring her into our bed because I'm too knackered to keep getting up, but she's taken to thrashing about and constantly feeding if she's next to me - one night she didn't stop feeding for FOUR HOURS. aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggghh!! I am thinking of trying what you're doing esk - spacing out the feeds but cuddling etc in between. We've had to do this because at nursery she can only feed every three-four hours from me (and previous to that she'd just boob-snack all day long) and she has taken to it without much of a fuss.

The bottle is a different story. I tried two days of not giving her breast milk during 9-5 and it was so miserable so I gave up.

She has croup now though, so no sleep through coughing and I will just have to persevere with the milk-and-rocking-on-tap scenario for a bit longer!

x

takethatlady · 07/02/2012 12:19

Sorry - I mean I've spaced out feeds in the day but haven't done it at night time yet.

nickelhasababy · 07/02/2012 12:34

DD does that.
i have discovered that we both go to sleep while she's feeding. it suits me okay Grin

vallinnapod · 07/02/2012 17:46

Never thought I would be one for CC...still not 100% sure but to have subjected the 3 of us to it for two nights I am willing to give it a go for 2 more. We are not totally militant with it. We 'only' leave DS for 5 mins and pick him up and cuddle him in those inbetween times. We shall see, last night may have been a fluke. I would like to think it isn't all in vain.

Had a good day here, two naps, one in our cot! I bought curtains and a lampshade at the weekend for his nursery so I am hoping he is appreciating them Wink

We are having pear for dinner tonight. So far DS has surprised me by much preferring more savoury tastes - spinach and broccoli, over sweet, bananas and apples. Rather belatedly we are also going for a weaning talk at the children's centre tomorrow...hope I have been doing it right Confused

FeijoaVodkaPlease · 07/02/2012 20:25

Hi Cowboy good to see you back

FeijoaVodkaPlease · 07/02/2012 20:26

Oh yeah, for those who haven't been about for a bit I'm Confessions. Had a name change for the new year.

takethatlady · 07/02/2012 22:09

Awww yay for the waving and crawling. DD waves too now and it's so cute when she waves at her dad when he comes in or waves goodbye at nursery :) She got up on all fours and started rocking and edging backwards at five months, and by six months was doing downward dogs (i.e. up on feet and hands with legs straight and bottom up in the air), and she's still doing that but not crawling! She never moves her arms once she's up. Plus she just rolls all over the place to get where she wants.

Keep going val, you can do it :)

No coughing tonight, so last night's blast of steroids at the out-of-hours doctor seems to have done the trick. Dammit, that means I have to go to work tomorrow.

nickelhasababy · 08/02/2012 11:12

what about Katee?
I see her on FB, but I don't know if she's still here under a namechange. Confused

I do worry that I'm talking to people I "know" but because they've namechanged I don't recognise them.

nickelhasababy · 08/02/2012 11:13

Confessions - can't even remember what you were before Confessions? was it NMCB? Confused

vallinnapod · 08/02/2012 16:40

Thanks TTL - 45 mins last night and only woke once to be fed - could have probably left him to settle (just minor grumbles) but selfishly I needed the boob relief!! Likewise, he woke around 7:30 and I could have probably left him a bit but again - boob bursting!! Really, really hoping this is not a fluke but the start of things to come.

LOL at the yogic babies! DS can do a great line of both feet in his mouth!! He can do a pretty impressive 'S' bend with his whole body - some times he forgets his head can turn both ways Wink

TTL hope you are feeling better - sounds horrible

Ladies that have/are weaning. I have started DS (23 weeks) and today I went to a weaning talk that said no meat/fish until after 26 weeks. Any thoughts from the real world? We are only a week in and have had lots of success with veg, not too bad with fruit and enjoying baby porridge. I was planning on meat/fish next week or the one after which I guess is 26 weeks near as damn it.

Nickel - don't for get the fanjo (post Choccie biscuits!) Grin

DS has now napped for 2 hours Shock

Eskarina · 08/02/2012 17:57

Wow wow wow on the sleep val. well done! And well done DS too. Although weirdly I found I was more tired when dd suddenly did this last week.

We've been weaning since 20 weeks but I have been playing it safe and dd has only had fruit/veg and baby rice with the occasional finger if toast or cheese. I'm going to hold off on the meat, fish and foods heavier in dairy and wheat until after next week when she'll be 6 months. (how the hell did that happen? 6 months already??!

I've spent the afternoon making an enormous cake for dd's dedication (like a christening) on Sunday. Am dreading doing the decorations for it. For some reason I had decided to pipe her name on. I now wish I had called her something short like Pam. Imogen Elizabeth is going to take some practise!

vallinnapod · 08/02/2012 20:46

LOL Esk, just ice 'DD' in true MN fashion Wink

I am feeling more tired - cumulative I guess. I genuinely have no idea when I last slept through the night....first trimester maybe?!

Can't believe your DD (or my DS for that matter!) is nearly 6 months. Pregnancy definitely didn't zoom by like this!

FeijoaVodkaPlease · 08/02/2012 21:08

Yes a loong time ago I was NMCB, I thought about going with NoMoreConfessions, but felt like a complete change for the new year after last year's crapness (and thought it was time to put my fanjo away). And it's working, DH is doing much better and slowly getting back into working and I might make up my mind what I want to do when I grow up Grin

Val I gave DD her first meat on Christmas day, so she would have been 25 weeks. She was quite happy with fruit and veg before that. This week she's turned in to an eating machine!

TTL sorry to hear DD had had croup, but good to hear she's doing better.

Sleep? what is sleep?

nickelDorritt · 08/02/2012 22:27

randomness from that baby today.
when I was feeding her this lunchtime, she was very unsettled and kept pulling around like she normally does at the end of a feed. was very annoying.
ended up trying again half hour later on the other side.
this evening, same side again, she was being all antsy, and not pulling, but being very vocal, and crying intermittantly Confused
god knows what was wrong with her - normally, if she's being mardy, i stick her on the boob and after an initial "aaaahhhh, sob sob" she goes for it!
It lasted so long that I nearly got my video camera to film her so I could post it here and go "wtf is going on with this baby?

I eventually held her free hand tight in mine, and she calmed down long enough to get some decent food.
Hmm

DD isn't getting meat at all - I have advised DH about this, and he's on board doing as he's told

vallinnapod · 09/02/2012 07:49

Nickel babies really are laws unto themselves sometimes. DS went through a stage every now and again where he gets annoyed with my boobs. I wonder if it is a growth spurt and they get antsy that the milk isn't coming out quick enough. I sure she will soon settle down. I ended up literally clamping him to my side for the first couple of minutes for him to get a good suck on and he then realised food was there and calmed down Smile

I had been lulled in to a false sense of security Sad 3 hours of crying last night but he then slept from midnight to 7am Shock Still, meant to be going out tonight but have cancelled as I don't think it is fair on DH or DS to leave them to go through that tonight. Mama cuddles do settle him better than Daddy ones at the moment and I don't think this is the nicest thing for any of us Sad The wine and friends will always be there next week Smile

vallinnapod · 09/02/2012 07:52

Meant to ask, are you a veggie? I am not and will give DS meat but would like him to have a predominantly veggie diet - lentils, pulses, dairy. I am wanting to stay as organic as poss and meat is so expensive and a real faff to cook in baby size portions!

nickelDorritt · 09/02/2012 11:07

she's okay at the moment, but night was fun - couldn't just clamp her on and fall asleep, cos she kept partially pulling off (sucking half the top of the nipple! screeeeeech! Shock)

i am veggie, yes, but dh isn't.
I have said that i want to raise dd veggie until she can understand the concept of killing animals for meat. to me, it's a moral issue. if i let her eat meat, i would be complicit in the killing of animals, and that's just as bad ass eating it myself. :(

CuriosityCola · 09/02/2012 20:53

Lots of posts to catch up Grin Have I missed anything exciting?

CuriosityCola · 09/02/2012 20:54

Childish Grin @ bad ass

Eskarina · 10/02/2012 08:59

GrinGrinGrin dd just slept through 7.30-7 (when DH had to wake her) albeit with a "dream feed" and nappy change at 10.

Of course I woke up leaking anyway and blocked duct has returned. Oh well.

Am hoping this snow goes away as we have family and friends travelling over here for dd's dedication on sun. My parents are driving down from the north today...

nickelDorritt · 10/02/2012 11:19

i had a recurring blocked duct last week.
just keep getting rid of it - if you get rid of it quickly enough it won't escalate.
(the last one, I fed DD on that side, and kind of massaged where the lumpy bit was as I fed. seemed to work)
