So we don't scare the viroids on the antenatal thread with horror stories of no sleep, chomped boobs and endless laundry or make them envious with tales of cuteness....

Well I'm sat here on labour ward holding my beautiful baby boy, born at 6.30 this morning after epic non-stop 34.5 hour labour Grin home birth went out the window as my blood pressure had gone up, though after 19 hrs with only tens an epidural seemed very appealing... Finally got it 6 hrs later Wink

Will tell birth story later when I've slept!!

cowboylover · 13/10/2011 16:37

Fantastic oats! Congratulations now enjoy Grin

Love Lamaze toys DD has Emily and the mermaid but I'm covering the octopus for Christmas. It's all so exciting!

How's the other housemovers going? Finally found the house and got the offer accepted so now we wait and wait!!!

Eskarina · 13/10/2011 17:07

Congrats on your lovely new DS oats. Enjoy those precious newborn snuggles.

fraktious · 13/10/2011 17:57

Grin congrats!

Looking forward to the birth story.

Yay for the arrival of Mini-Oats Grin

Double-yay for the house Cowboy - 5 weeks off moving here...supposedly...builder's estimate Hmm

Esk sorry it has been a stressful 24 hours...I have had sleepless nights but because I have been stressing rather than DS keeping me up. Bit over being at home, wondering how we are going to finish paying for our building work. My life feels like it is a bit on hold. With the exception of my NCT group I haven't joined anything else as I want to wait until we are in our new area. As a result feeling a bit 'meh'. I get out loads but (and I never thought I would say this) just going out for lunch is a bit boring now...

ConfessionsOfAWereFanjo · 14/10/2011 08:45

Whoop, congratulations Mightily and welcome MiniOats. GrinGrin

Val are there any one off type things you can do with DS? Like Mum and baby movie sessions. That way you're out around other Mums, but not joining a group you'll be leaving shortly.

vallinnapod · 14/10/2011 09:38

Actually went to the cinema yesterday! Saw Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy....it was our second movie outing, saw Jane Eyre the first time. I am sticking to films I know the story to as the babies make concentrating quite hard and the dark room makes sleep inevitable Grin

vallinnapod · 14/10/2011 17:32

DS sleeping A LOT yesterday and today. Feeding fine and wet nappies with no temperature so not completely freaking out too worried. I am assuming we are just having a growth spurt?

Of course night times are 'normal' Wink

MightilyOats · 15/10/2011 21:24

Life a bit of a whirlwind at the moment, I think I've had approximately 6 hours sleep in the past week, so I'm sure things will catch up with me eventually. So, the concise version of my birth story:

As you know I had a few niggles over the weekend, various shows, contractions, bump dropping etc. On the Monday I thought it had all kicked off - started having painful contractions etc, but they all went off when the midwife came. She did examine me though, and things had started moving. Felt normal the next day, until 8pm, when cx started up every 5-10 minutes, and felt like the real business. I tried to go to bed, but cx kept waking me up, so had a bath and then stuck the tens on at about 3am. By 6 I thought I'd better ring the mw, and was convinced I'd be at 4cm, but no, only 1-2... spent most of the morning in the bath and got the mw back at lunchtime. Both had expressed concern about my blood pressure, which was in the 90s (bearing in mind I was aiming for home water birth). I was desperate to get into the pool, but was only 2-3cm by mid afternoon, and the mw supervisor came and said we should head into the hospital to be checked out because of the bp issues.

So we went in, the lovely mw had read my birth plan and put loads of active birth stuff in the room for me to make it more homely, and assured me they would try their hardest to make it as natural a birth as possible. I was knackered by this point, as I'd already done 19 hours at home (double ended cx when lying down, so 10 mins apart but lasting over 90secs, every 3-4 minutes otherwise), so I was quite keen on the idea of an epidural at that point. They encouraged me to try the gas and air, which I hated at first, but then firmly hung on to from that point onwards, there's something very reassuring about it... Anaesthetist finally turned up at 9pm, then promptly disappeared to do an EMCS, so I didn't get my epidural until 11.30, but what bliss! I was petrified of having to do all the pushing without having had any respite, and also really scared of cx ramping up if my waters broke without one, so it was lovely to be able to relax and sleep for a bit. Eventually they said I was good to go, and the pushing began... but mw was concerned the cx were tailing off so the registrar put me on a syntocinon drip. Although the epidural took most of the pain away, I was still able to feel the contractions and they were pretty intense, so I was encouraged to push through them, especially when the top ups wore off and they said I couldn't have any more... Unfortunately although I had managed to keep him in an anterior presentation for the whole labour, he managed to get his head turned sideways and got it stuck, so no amount of me pushing on my own was going to get him out... ventouse just slipped off, so it was with forceps and pushing for England that finally did it. Had to have an episiotomy, so rather sore now, but I was determined I wasn't going to have a bloody c section after all that!

DS was born at 6.33am, weighing 8lb 11oz and with a 9/10 apgar score after a minute that I'm really proud of Grin The student midwife gently helped him latch on, and in half an hour of him being born he was feeding well. Since then we've had a few issues with soreness, but I think we're getting there... my milk actually came in yesterday evening, so it's evidently working!

Sorry for the epic ramble, but its been quite cathartic writing it all down Smile Although it didn't go to plan, I think it was a really positive experience and I'm looking forward to the next few days and weeks!

MightilyOats · 15/10/2011 21:29

Also meant to say, because I kept very quiet throughout, all the mw etc thought I was just coping v well with the pain (I did a lot of breathing through it - yoga/hypnobirthing), so they might have been a bit quicker with getting things moving if I'd been a screamer... !

cowboylover · 15/10/2011 23:10

Well done! I was a screamer or as DH put it 'sounding like I was being murdered' so I'm not surprised they where there was the epi as soon as I agreed to it Smile

I don't know how long away we are, solicitor has said should be ready in 5-6 weeks but that brings us close to Christmas so we might move in after but not sure yet.

vallinnapod · 16/10/2011 17:44

Well, I was a screamer and think my pain relief (G&A) was actually delayed because the thought I was overreacting Grin You can't win!

How exciting Cowboy. We just got a call from DFS to say our sofas are being delivered...not that we are remotely ready for them!

fraktious · 16/10/2011 18:13

I suffered in silence and then cried (and got magic gas) then used screaming as my pain relief. Twas very effective.

Glad minioats is here safely and it's so trite to say but it doesn't matter how they get here because at the end if the days it's soooo worth it.

I have discovered an argument against early weaning. The nappies are vile. The less time one has to spend dealing with them the better, and that apple/prune combo may have worked a little tooooo well.

OP posts:
vallinnapod · 16/10/2011 18:37

LOL frak I have heard many a nappy horror story around weaning! How old is M now? God time is flying.

Re: birth stories...once you get past the 2nd or 3rd week of life the birth seems so long ago it really doesn't matter. DS is no 6.5 weeks and someone asked me about his birth this w/e who i hadn't seen, it felt like a life time ago that I had last told the story, let alone it happening.

DS is sooooo long he wore 3-6 month trousers today Shock The 0-3 were also getting tight on his tummy. I must secretly be on steroids or something, I am growing a ginormosaurus baby Grin

Quick BF question. Do you ever stop leaking until you give up feeding?

Eskarina · 16/10/2011 22:01

Leaking? Not stopped yet. It's beginning to annoy me.

cowboylover · 16/10/2011 23:27

I think I have stopped leaking or at least a lot less! Only in the morning if she has slept or when feeding on the other side I do occasionally but 20 weeks now and thats very recent!

Weaning is hard and we have not even started yet! Just the whole when and how with all the cooking and sterilising I think breast feeding has made me lazy Grin

Eskarina · 17/10/2011 09:00

Good to know there's an end somewhere in sight cowboy. I tried reusable breast pads but they're entirely hopeless. I can leak through one in about 1/2 an hour, and the 1st ones I got don't even have a waterproof backing - what madness is that?! So despite my cloth nappies I'm still filling the bin with a box of gel-filled breast pads each week.

vallinnapod · 17/10/2011 13:40

Esk I have some bamboo reusable ones from Little Lamb which are great, and comfy. Tend to wear reusable Medela ones during the day which are also good.

The leaking drives me insane at night as I just wear a feeding vest and pads which means I inevitably wake up in a wet patch or feed myself into one!

ConfessionsOfAWereFanjo · 17/10/2011 16:17

I still occasionally leak (at the most awkard times usually), but I remember from DS I was eventually able to ditch the leaky nipple guards. Can't quite remember when but I'm sure it was before I weaned him at about 5 months. So there is hope for you all.

You lot make me look like a right anti earth mother type! I use disposable nappies, wipes and breast pads (though in my defence, the amount of electricty I would have to use to get nappies dry would negate their enviromental greenness).

Cowboy, after 6 months you don't have to be so strict with the steralising, so weaning can be easier in that respect (but I still remember the poos, so it's only a small bonus really).

Val both my DCs went into 3-6 month clothes at 6 weeks. Babies really grow to labels and charts. I am rather surprised, disturbed and slightly upset that DD has started going into 6-9 month clothes already. She's only 3 and a half months!!!

CuriosityCola · 17/10/2011 18:27

I use throw away breast pads. I like the tomee tipee ones. I didn't realise you could get reusable.

Reusable nappy question Val, have you fallen back in love with them? I really like mine but worried ds is too slim for them. They fit ok, but I worry about the bulk affecting him when I sit him up as they don't bend/ give at the waste. Does that make sense? Determined to use them full time as I grudge the price of disposables.

Had a tough week here as I have thrush. Poor ds had a really white mouth and it was ruining his latch. Sad

vallinnapod · 17/10/2011 20:18

If look at our NCT group, babies are such differentshapes and sizes. DS was the first born of our lot but only by 10-14 days and he is humongous compared to everyone eles! But then I am 5'8" and DH is 6'2" so he was never going to have 'short' genes!

CC I have sold my reusables Blush My main reason? I didn't like DS looking like a weeble and none of his clothes fitting him, double Blush. Naughty me.

Hope the thrush clears up. DS is still really bunged up - 2 weeks now. Worried he could be allergic to the cats?

CuriosityCola · 17/10/2011 20:42

Grin at weeble. As ds isn't big built he looks very bottom heavy. Who else is using reusables?

I'm trying not to compare baby sizes too much. Ds is putting on weight well and is average weight and height. All the other babies from antenatal are huge, especially the ff ones.

ConfessionsOfAWereFanjo · 17/10/2011 21:45

I just read back what I wrote early and the last bit should have read 'Babies rarely grow to labels and chart', the opposite of what I actually wrote!

Thanks to MN I've discovered Lidl's nappies are cheaper and just as good as pampers/huggies. Which is good because I live a 5 minute walk from Lidl, so don't have to drag them half way across town anymore.

Val I'm sure you've already heard it, but have you tried saline drops/spray, propping up the head of his bed and also is his room warm enough (which turned out to be DS's problem when the first 2 suggestions didn't work. (Stupid uninsulated NZ wooden houses!)

Eskarina · 17/10/2011 21:56

I'm still feeling the love for our reusable Flips and I made some reusable wipes by cutting up some towelling material and hemming the edges. They just go in the nappy bucket with the nappies. DD is small though, so the nappies don't interfere with her clothes. Despite being a fair size at birth, she's still only 9lb 9, putting on about 4oz a week, though growing in length well, so in 0-3 month clothes but can wear newborn things if they don't have feet in them. But girls clothes can be easier, especially for a skinny Minnie as dresses can start out ankle length and end up as little tunics and last for ages.

I sat DD in her bumbo for the first time today, she really seemed to enjoy it. It says from 3 months or when they can hold their heads up independently. She's only 7 weeks but can lift her head really well. I wouldn't leave her in it for any length of time but it was more of a success than the bouncy chair, which she regards as an instrument of cruel torture!

We've just had a really odd random scream from her. She's been in bed for about 40 mins, asleep and suddenly really screamed. DH went up and tried to settle her but had to pick her up and bring her down. But then she went right back to sleep in his arms and has gone back to sleep with no further fuss, almost like she woke to wonder where we were and got scared when she couldn't see us. Poor baby!

fraktious · 18/10/2011 07:04

We use reusables. What kind are you using cola? We have various degrees (cloth bum, megabum, gigabum...) and at first they were all big as they're all onesizers, now he's 6mo and they're fine. Another one with reusable wipes and boob pads here. I stopped leaking around 4 months, used pads until 5 at work and now only leak if he goes a long time at night.

I feel like a shite mummy today - he was sitting up playing in our bed while I dozed this morning and he toppled as he was reaching for a toy and smacked his head on the cot bars (we've put the barrier up on his bedside cot to transition away from cosleeping) - there were tears on both side but his were soon sorted by boob!
