Here we are, our new thread and this time we all have our babies !

I thought we were getting thrush again, but then realised I had let ds's latch get sloppy. He was constantly clicking and tutting at the breast but I was too distracted to notice.

Ds and I made butterfly cakes together this morning, ds got to choose the colour of the buttercream icing ..... It is a very lurid shade of pink and they are covered in sugar strands. You can never have enough sugar!

Ali, are you joking? Why has no one told me this before! 8 weeks I've been sterilising everything! HV, infant feeding advisor, MWs, BF peer supporter, not one has mentioned it. In fact MWs at the hospital asked if I had a steriliser and bottles if I was expressing. Ah well!!

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 27/06/2011 20:58

Lis I am not joking! I can't believe no-one has said anything to you, well at least you know now!

JenAT · 27/06/2011 20:59

Hello everyone, been trying to catch up on the past weeks posts. Been on hol for a week in Pembrokeshire in Wales in a caravan. Had a great time but weather wasn't great. However I'm actually quite glad it wasn't as hot as it has been the last few days as G really doesn't like the heat.

I can't remember who was asking about travel cots for camping but I bought a pop up travel bassinet from amazon ,a samsonite one and it was great. It folds into a little bagm and basically pops up when you take it out. The mattress it comes with is very thin, so I lay a few towels underneath and G slept really well much better than when at home actually.

I am bloody roasting this evening. Does anyone else find that breastfeeding makes them extra sweaty. I seem to be constantly sweating, especially at night, it is so gross!!!

My poor uncle who was ill in hospital died last Monday and it's his funeral on Fri. My Mum just read his eulogy to me and it was beautiful. I did take G into the hospital a few times to see him and I am so glad I did. The last time I saw him was before I went on holiday. (He insisted we went away) and he waved bye to George and gave him a kiss before we left the hospital.

Anyway, good to read all your posts. Sorry no namechecking. Time for Silent Witness with a cold shandy Smile

LisMcA · 27/06/2011 21:18

Oh Jen I'm so sorry to hear that ((hugs)). I'll be thinking of you on Friday, it's a terribly sad time, but you have G and the memories of your uncle to get you through. Glad you had a nice holiday though.

1st injections tomorrow morning. Any tips on how to not turn into a jibbering wreck??

Liv77 · 27/06/2011 21:19

ecuse my Hv said you can use the same cooled boiled water bottle during the day if you've used tongs to put the teats on. If you use your fingers best to change it after a few hours.

lisI use a TT microwave steriliser, no faff involved, just chuck tap water in the bottom and nuke it for 6 mins. i use milton for the nipple shields etc mainly because they can sit around for a while before they get washed Blush
Most guidelines say the top rack of a hot dishwasher is fine for steralising bottles but I wouldn't trust my dishwasher, it's ancient and came with the house.

chilli P also has her 2nd jabs tomorrow, last time she slept for a couple of hours but was extremely grumpy when she woke up which is quite unlike her. A little Calpol sorted her out though. I hope it doesn't muck up her sleeping pattern as she usually goes between 7-10 hours overnight now. Grin

kittycatcat · 27/06/2011 21:21

lis I didn't know either.

Jen sorry about your uncle.

Petalouda · 27/06/2011 21:34

Sorry to hear about your uncle Jen.

We're off to pembroke tomorrow. DH has just come home with a massive 11kg travel cot. The pop up one sounds better for camping, but hopefully we'll get plenty of use from this one over the next few years. The 'mattress' is a bit crap, I'm going to take a lambswool thing which should pad it out & keep him toasty too.

I'm not putting anything in our dishwasher. Everything plastic comes out orange because of the amount of olive oil & tomato based food we eat! You should see the calpol spoon. It practically glows!

JustKeepSwimming · 27/06/2011 21:36

Jen - sorry to hear about your uncle. I sweat excessively atm too. First the night sweats post-birth, then they calmed down but now it's horrid.
Not helped by this heat of course. And i get soooo hot during feeding, one of the bf hormones raises your skin temp but i don't really get why Confused
And my deodorant doesn't touch it.

FInally got round to booking M's 1st jabs for next week, she'll be 11wks i hthink by then, oops!
or is it 10....Blush

caramellokoalalover · 27/06/2011 21:51

Jen sorry to hear about your uncle. Hope the shandys are going down well.

JKS I'm late on the jabs for S too, she'll be 10wks on Wed and her first ones are on Thursday. GP surgery didn't seem to care though that it was late.

Bloody boiling here and I had no idea how to dress S for bed. She's naked in her swaddle pod. It's 27 degrees in our room Sad [hot face]. I'm not going to sleep worrying that she's cooking. She won't sleep unswaddled though, keeps twonking herself on the head! How do I transition her from swaddle to grobag???

I'm glad to know the sweating is bfing related too. I was wondering about that...

Excellent news on the colic and wine front! S slept brilliantly Saturday night and I hadn't put it down to the wine I had drunk. Must get some more in for medicinal reasons.

Liv77 · 27/06/2011 21:58

jen Sorry to hear about your uncle.
(and yes I am a sweaty BF too)

Petalouda · 27/06/2011 22:16

shit, here I am having Wine after he's asleep, and it'll be no use to him by the time he wants feeding again (I hope).

I must start earlier tomorrow. For the baby's sake.

Liv77 · 27/06/2011 22:50

I'm drinking my Wine whilst dd is asleep across my lap, does that count Wink

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 27/06/2011 22:59

Liv - osmosis, surely? Grin

Petal - you must, 'tis your parental duty.

T is very busy practising blowing raspberries at DH. It is too hot to sleep here.

ecuse · 28/06/2011 03:50

Anyone else up with grumpy sweaty babies? J just in a nappy here, spent most of the day with a cold flannel on her head. G4am and Gro Egg says it's 26.2 degrees in our bedroom, the coolest room in the house. I haven breastfed at all today because it's too hot to have her pressed against me - she's been drinking EBM!

Sorry about your uncle Jen but thank goodness you and the babba spent time with him before he died

daisylulu · 28/06/2011 04:04

Ecuse - I'm up with my grumpy J who is also in just nappy and also grumpy from jabs this morning. Fun times. Sooooooooooo tired!

Hope you get some sleep soon. Thank god for the mumsnet app to keep me sane right now!

fraktious · 28/06/2011 05:47

Damnit! I wish I wasn't intolerant to alcohol, then I too could have a baby sleeping in the evening.

He went midnight - 8am, was fussing so I popped him in with me for a quick feed and he barely woke, so he's now sprawled in the middle of our bed and I've got up. I just want him to go down earlier! He sees the evening as playtime, particularly around 10pm. There must be sone kind of sleep cycle logic there.

So sorry to hear about your uncle, Jen.

JKS/Caramello I wouldn't worry about being late for jabs. The vac schedule starts incredibly early IMHO, especially for BF babies. Good luck for the injections later Lis.

Enjoy camping, Petal! What is it with men and huge bits of baby equipment? If you want a travel cot you want to be able to travel with it....which to me means something like your samsonite one!

I sterilise everything [obsessive emoticon] but will need to work out a way to sterilise at work between pumpings. That may be where a sealed container of Milton comes in handy.

Petalouda · 28/06/2011 06:04

Morning,

F's room is a more reasonable 22C this morning. Grin

We finally had a good night (19:00-00:30, 1:00-5:30) after a run of 3+ post-midnight wakeups. In fact it was the cat who woke me up at 4 today! Currently trying to convince F that it's not actually morning yet.

Frak out TT pump came with a tub which can be used as a microwave sterilizer. Presumably you could use any similar sized tub? And you're right about DH & kit!

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 28/06/2011 09:38

Jen I'm really sorry about your uncle :( Lovely that you have those memories of him with G though.

T slept 11.45-7.30, was awake for about an hour and is now back to sleep. Thank goodness it is cooler here this morning.

Poor DS1 was the one suffering, I had to change his pj top when we went to bed because he was soaked with sweat, poor little chap. He looks really tired this morning so I predict a meltdown later

frakk - you may know this, but you can get Milton tablets, which would be easier to keep at work than a bottle of liquid.

chillikat · 28/06/2011 11:34

Our room was about 25 degrees all night too. M was in a vest with a sheet over her instead of in the sleeping bag. Realised this morning how good the sleeping bag is when she woke up diagonally across the crib then managed to get her leg stuck between the bars :( luckily we were awake to quickly rescue her. Think we're now at a more reasonable 22.

Liv good luck with the jabs. I now have calpol in the house ready but M didn't need it last time.

Sorry to hear about your uncle Jen

Petal enjoy the camping - look forward to hearing how it goes. We keep discussing whether it would be possible to do a festival at the end of August with M but the long drive and not being able to guarentee the weather puts me off.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 28/06/2011 11:35

Sorry to hear about your uncle Jen, I'm glad he got to meet G.

Frakk- you only have to sterilise the pump once a day, but wash in warm soapy water between pumps. You can get plastic bags that you can use in the microwave that sterilise.

I think the vaccination timetable is about catching mothers before they go back to work, rather than it being the optimum time for the lo's to be vaccinated, so you don't need to worry if you don't go when they say you should.

It's cooler here but quite humid. Luckily I slept ok last night but ds2 was a bit unsettled. If it's not one it's the other ...........

Whoever sent the sun here, thank you! Lovely day today, no heating or socks required!!

Jabs done, qyite a bit of sceaming, but seems to b ok now. Will leave him to sleep it off.

ILTMIMI, following on from yesterdays revelation from Ali, do you even need to sterilise the pump?

kittycatcat · 28/06/2011 13:45

Must have been us lis. much cooler and no sun here.

Glad all us well after the jabs.

Good q re pump. I'm just cleaning my stuff and putting it in boiled water.

Expressed 5 oz from one boob this am so thanks to whoever said morning is best!

DairyBeetle · 28/06/2011 15:45

Hello all, hope those who've had enough of the heat are enjoying the break in temperature and lis is enjoying the sunshine at last!

Jen I'm sorry to hear about your uncle, but it's so lovely that you were able to take G in to see him.

Petal hope you enjoy the camping, I'm very Envy, I love camping but DH isn't so keen.

We survived our trip northwards, though I don't think S appreciated the momentous occasion that was his first trip to Yorkshire! It was great to see all my family, and while I was very thankful for PIL in letting us stay with them I was feeling very nattered by the time we came home. I know they mean well but if they weren't wanting to play or cuddle S they were constantly asking if we were ok/what are we doing/does S need X/Y/Z? They are like this to everyone and DH spends most of the time we're there muttering under his breath about how on earth did he survive childhood without going crazy! But on the whole a successful trip and S dazzled my family, and not just because he's the first boy in the family in nearly 20 years!

The heat has prompted S to move into his cot in his own room as it was so much cooler. He seems perfectly happy with the new arrangement though I keep looking longingly at the empty moses basket (this is where the whole wanting another thing starts isn't it!). 12 week jabs tomorrow so we'll see if he's still sleeping well after those.

Oh, does the Wine helping colic and wind work with beer? Or will I just have to open a bottle and have a glass each evening? Grin

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 28/06/2011 15:50

We have got the mother of all thunder storms here now and the rain is pouring down - it's all very exciting!! And on the plus side the headache I have had since last night has gone - something to do with the change in pressure I suspect.

Frakk - are you pissing yourself about us bitching about the heat?! I know I would be if I lived in the sub-tropics!

Hehe, almost ILTMI. But then I remember you lot don't have aircon to retreat to...
