Eek it's going so fast!

Well my night out has been cancelled so it's not an urgent rush round the shops but we are going to have z look for some summery clothes anyway.

Vegan cheese. I will never ever eat dairy, so anything I make is always a vegan version.
Had lasagne tonight. Will save me cooking for the next two nights too! Woo hoo.

I put some recipes here, Tribs: veganparent.com/?q=node/9, but I am in the process of closing that website down and transferring it all to a new site, but for now, that link will work. Hth.
Mm, butternut squash risotto - sounds good!

HJ, would love home-grown veg!

Tribs, we have had such a massive declutter, and it feels great. Well worth it!

tf, hope you feel better soon. That is very very cute of your DS!

MockingbirdsNotForSale · 11/07/2011 21:54

Polenta is soo yummy and is good with sausages too HJ.

Love your never ever eat dairy No Hun! I looked for vegan yoghurt for DD recently as she gets a rash if she eats cow dairy (like her mother) and the only one available was Alpro which contained salt which was rather disappointing. Does the vegan cheese melt well?

I was seriously ill when I was 4 and was tested for allergies and I'm allergic to:
All cow dairy, egg whites, beef, cod, cat and dog fur ( I put up with the latter to have dogs). As a result I am very wary about giving DD eggs and also because I never eat them its highly unlikely I'm going to cook them just for her. When she's over a year I'll try her with them maybe (now I'm writing it I'm wondering why...!). Mind you I don't like mushrooms but cook them for DH as part of a cooked breakfast so I gave them to DD and she really likes them! I specifically bought forestiere mushrooms for her today!

Tribble I love cooking and have tonnes of recipe ideas. What general foodstuffs do you like- I'm sure I can find you something. Or would you like recipes that have worked with DD specifically?

HarrietJones · 12/07/2011 06:56

I dont eat meat but cook it for dh/dd1. Though I stick to basic stuff. I'm not much of a cook. dd3 got refluxy after yoghurt so we've not given her any for a bit though she's beenfine with other dairy.

Morning all!

Need some ideas as to what I can rustle up mealwise for ds!

Easy peasy stuff would be great! Also I'm outta pouches! I also need to extend his palate on from bananas, yoghurt, toast, Weetabix and rice cakes!!! Grin

SeaShellsMyDogSmells · 12/07/2011 12:04

Poached fish or even fish pie is fab silver! Just check for bones :)

Were you bought up Vegan NoHun? Dh and I were both raised by the children of farmers so have a "whole animal" approach to food (ie roast chicken on a Sunday, left overs for stick/sandwiches/chicken soup). I do however really try to buy local and from as high a welfare standard as I can afford. Ideally I'd grOw my own veg fruit meat and dairy but I fear that may be a pipe dream Grin

SeaShellsMyDogSmells · 12/07/2011 12:04

Stick=stock. I even previewed that Hmm

SilverSky · 12/07/2011 12:21

Sounds lush! Recipe? Trouble is I'm a rotten cook. Not creative at all. Sad

I've got sweet potatoes baking. Suppose I could do cheese too?

HarrietJones · 12/07/2011 13:01

We had sweet potatoes for lunch, dd had salad with hers , I had mango pickle.

We need ideas for breakfast/lunch as dd is currently using ip her salt allowance on breakfast with cheesy toast. She won't eat any cereals and we are still avoiding yoghurts, this means sandwiches are out at lunch time

OP posts:
SilverSky · 12/07/2011 13:40

Bananas? Can she have dairy?

Just attempted sweet pots with cheese mashed. Not impressed. Ended up coating with peach pudding (pot). Will try again! Could be cheese was too strong. Must buy mild for him. What salad did your DD have!?

For snack later I may try cucumber and tomatoes. How do you serve? Chopped? Seeds scooped out? Confused

Think there should be a training course for weaning! ESP for dimwits like moi! Hmm

HarrietJones · 12/07/2011 14:22

She seems to have gone off bananas. She prefers cherries at the moment. Expensive tastes here (dd2 too!)
I just quarter a chunk of cucumber/tomatoes etc and she strips them & spits out the skin. She's very good at that. Even strips the skin on strawberries which is v v thin! She also eats spring onions & pepper in salad cut into sticks.

Ds loves cucumber, roast carrots and parsnip, peach quarters, melon, mango, raspberries - all make good easy finger food.
Also fish pie (we make with rice milk as he is allergic to dairy) , shepherds pie and risotto are big hits. Dh cooks them though!
Ds and dh got the tummy bug too :( ds now asleep on my lap, its a lovely reminder of the newborn snuggles! Have to say generally though that I enjoy it much more now ds is so much more interactive.

Cheese & butter & milk seem fine it's yogurts which appear to be a problem.

OP posts:
NoHunIntended · 12/07/2011 14:26

Thanks, Mock! Mm, Alpro yoghurt. I think I have some in - thanks for reminding me!

There is one vegan cheese that is extra melting. It melts fine for my preference. The trick is not to view it as an exact replacement, and just as an extra ingredient. I like it, anyway.

That is some allergy list!

Silver, our DS has exactly what we are having. Easy.

Sea, no, wasn't raised even vegetarian. Went vegetarian at 19, vegan at 25. I don't actually believe the term welfare can be applied to any animal which is slaughtered for consumption. Would love to grow much of my own fruit and vegetables, really hope when we eventually move out of London, we'll get a property with a decent space for doing so.

SilverSky · 12/07/2011 14:31

Hun the problem is that HI works a lot and I eat on my own a lot. Out of convenience I have ready meals which I am now stopping. This means that I need to make meals for one and a half. The half being the little guy.

NoHunIntended · 12/07/2011 14:42

He's not a full half though. I make our own meals, then just give DS a small portion. Just up the portions you prepare slightly, and job done. I promise it isn't very much work/effort. I think it's just getting out of the habit of readymeals. And I bet your own food will taste and feel better.

SeaShellsMyDogSmells · 12/07/2011 16:35

:) you and me both Hun. I dream of a small holding. My strawberries were attacked by my toddler though whilst still green so this year's crop is not great :) good mangetout and excellent rhubarb though!! Peppers got too cold though :(

Re fish pie- I use Rick steins. Poach fish in 450ml milk (I use whole milk as it's for the dc too) and 300ml cream. Use the poaching liquid to make a white sauce, which you put lots of parsley or dill in. Chop up 4 hard boiled eggs into dish, add fish, pour on sauce, top with mash potato with lots of butter (I think he may even add cream to the mash but I don't) I serve with veg yum yum yum

HarrietJones · 12/07/2011 16:36

Our meal times are random, tonight it's dh,dd3 & I . Tomorrow it's dd2/3 & I and yesterday it was all of us! Even lunch changes regularly! I pick all day so I've had to force myself over meal times. We do eat a lot of pasta & homemade by dh pesto or new potatoes & homegrown veg or made by the Co-op pizza

OP posts:
SeaShellsMyDogSmells · 12/07/2011 16:37

Missed out an onion-stick a chopped onion in as you poach. And nutmeg in your white sauce.

I really shouldn't do this from memory Blush

HarrietJones · 12/07/2011 16:39

We have a decent veg patch in the garden, loads of fruit bushes/canes. We have our name down for an allotment but if we had the cash we'd go for a small holding. Or possibly buy next door to double our gardenas they don't use theirs and we could triple the size of the house!

OP posts:
SeaShellsMyDogSmells · 12/07/2011 16:46

Sounds fantastic hj! Our garden is really really exposed so my plants have been annihilated. It's my first year of trying to garden here, and it shows as I'm not used to the strength and persistence of a prevailing wind hitting square on!

HarrietJones · 12/07/2011 17:14

Ours & next doors together are a walled garden with a fence dividing so fairly sheltered. I did grow a lot in my old house in a 3mx1m raised bed in my back yard and hanging baskets/plastic greenhouse thing so I'm pretty good at fitting stuff in. We have two greenhouses now & they are pretty much mine for obsessive tomato growing

OP posts:
MockingbirdsNotForSale · 13/07/2011 11:32

Ooh home grown tomatoes....

I am dog tired..........

TribbleTrelawney · 13/07/2011 14:32

All this talk of gardens is getting me wanting to be one of those Mums off of the adverts who waltz around their nice houses with home grown veggies and very well behaved rosy cheeked children. The reality is much much different, I am what the grown up plants threaten their baby plants with when they won't eat their miracle grow. Seriously I once killed an office full of plants and two
