I think there's just a balance. My parents were very liberal with us but always explained things to us and why it was they would/wouldn't want us to do certain things. We definitely did things I wouldn't want Orlaith to do but were actually very well behaved compared to most of our friends. I just hope I manage to find that balance and make sure she's able to make the right decisions herself.

Where's that wishful thinking emoticon? Wink

cinnamongreyhound · 03/06/2011 13:46

Luke doesn't wee very often saoirse86 but he does drink quite well and have 3-4 milk feeds a day. With ds1 I had to open his nappy and close it again before changing it or I'd get soaked and Luke has never done that!

I agree with you about shoes and clothes sassy34264 I have a friend whose 3 yo wears high heels and I hate to see. I watch music channels because ds1 loves them and at 4 he has no idea thankfully but I am shocked by what they show in the day! My mum was hughely strict and never trusted that she'd brought me up the right way and I would make the right choices. I never rebelled, just fought with her all the time and left home at the first opportunity!! I am strict on behaviour at the moment, I expect ds1 and the children I mind to do as they are told but I explain my reasons behind it Grin

newmum001 · 03/06/2011 14:47

i remember asking my mum what an abortion was when i was about 10, we (me and twin sister) were upstairs watching the brookside repeat and it was mentioned on that and my mum went berserk! Threatened to take our tv away etc so i totally see where you're coming from with that! Eamon Holmes was talking about songs the other day and his 9 year old son was singing the new Bruno Mars song about having sex with a pretty girl and he was horrified! I also get where you're coming from with clothes, did anyone watch Big Fat Gypsy Weddings when it was on? some of those kids were dressed like total sluts. Reading this back maybe i won't be as relaxed with Grace as i initially thought Grin

sassy34264 · 03/06/2011 15:19

lol newmum
i dont necessarily think it is strict as such, its cos other mums seem to be letting theirkids watch, wear and do stuff that to me is totally irresponsible.
but i found out the other month that chloe has lied to everyone in her class about having a mobile phone already. when i asked her why? she said cos they'll think i'm a freak for not having one. so i suppose i have to be mindful of her fitting in too. i'm not sur how strong im going to be at resisting a fb page for her once she goes to high school and everyone else has one. Hmm

saoirse86 · 04/06/2011 10:04

What a gorgeous day! Grin We're going round to SIL's later to sit in the garden and play in the paddling pool, and we can finally talk openly about babies!

cinnamongreyhound · 04/06/2011 11:04

Just being nosey really saoirse86, but how do they decide who will be pregnant? I seem to remember one couple on obem where one partner had the first baby and the other one had the second one. Hope the ivf works for them anyway, very Envy of you and bananacurry with nieces/nephews my brother says he's never going to have any :(

saoirse86 · 04/06/2011 12:23

SIL (as in DP's sister) would have wanted to carry the child but she's extremely overweight, she's 38 and has PCOS and lots of hormonal issues along with that, so she was advised not to try. Her DP is very fit, healthy and slim, she's 33 (I think) and has no other medical problems. Apparently she'd said that she never wanted to carry a child but changed her mind after Orlaith was born! Grin

They said her eggs actually turned out to be not as good as they'd expect so they've only implanted 2 fertilised eggs. I'm really excited for them but it also feels really nerve wracking, and I'm not even carrying the child! Confused

cinnamongreyhound · 04/06/2011 19:53

I hadn't thought about who was the most suitable for success, duh!! Will be looking forward to hearing their good news Grin

comixminx · 04/06/2011 20:03

Out of all the possible messy foodstuffs that a baby can eat, couscous has got to rank as one of the messiest. That is all.

Aww, saoirse, nice that you guys helped change her mind about having a baby! Not that life is only about that but you must have been good role models / examples.

saoirse86 · 04/06/2011 20:38

Or maybe Orlaith's the perfect baby! Hmm Grin

I know they'd looked into adoption and fostering but didn't feel it was for them, and as SIL may not be able to carry a child they'd kind of given up on the idea I think. SIL told me that when they had Orlaith for a few hours when she was about 10 weeks old, there was one point where she smiled at her DP and she burst into tears. She said that she wanted them to experience that everyday and then started looking into the IVF. Awwww! Grin

mapletrees · 05/06/2011 21:10

How can such a small boy produce so much shit in such a short space of time????????????? Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 05/06/2011 22:02

Lol mapletrees, it's a mystery!!

Hope all goes well for those back to work tomorrow :)

sassy34264 · 05/06/2011 22:28

mapletrees i have one the same. isobel does little ones a few times a day. jacob goes once a day, but if he misses a day.........
left him with my mum on fri while i went chippy. as soon as i opened the front door i could smell it! first words out my mums mouth where "you timed that nicely" Grin he's also a wriggler, and apparently she had him held upside down by one leg to try to stop him getting off the mat and onto the carpet. wish i would have seen that! wishing you a happy return to work too. x

Debs75 · 06/06/2011 11:11

I took Lucy to watch Billy Elliott the musical on Saturday. My cousin was in it as a ballett class dancer.
I had to buy earmuffs as it is quite noisy but Lucy was a star and didn't mind them on at all. she played with a few toys, watched a bit and had a couple of feeds. She even slept during the second half so they definitely worked.

patito · 06/06/2011 14:37

sassy There have been some bad construction-political corruption cases here in Spain, in fact I think Spain was ranked 2nd worst in corruption, only behind Italy!! Theres lots of demonstartions going off at the moment as the people are really fed up with the state of the government and democracy here, hope things do change cause its a disgrace.
Also re: Chole, I dont even think thats being strict, I mean she´s only 10! For me I would say your protecting her childhood years and letting her be just that. Far too much sexualization of children via the media these days and overstimulation from it as well.

We went away for the weekend and I got sick again, and then went back to GPs with DS today who´s got tonsilitis, when will it ever end??? It seems we´ve been poorly for weeks now.

Meet up with an another English couple who live close by and they are off to UK for a month in the summer and have asked if we want to house sit. Its closer to DPs work and they have a huge garden, cant wait! I think they might find the house occupied when they get back Grin

SeaChelles · 06/06/2011 19:48

Ok....how on earth do you deal with temper tantrums in a 8.5 month old!!! Shock I'm talking serious back arching and screaming whenever he doesn't want to do something. I've just been putting him down and walking away....but am I supposed to do something else?! Good lord....!

On a more positive note, we've got some proper babbling going on, loads of Babababababa's and rararararara's. Olly was so concentrated on getting moving and on his feet that he wasn't the noisiest of little boys, but today has been constant chatter! Its lovely. For now.... Wink

Loads of bumps and bruises here still, including a massive scratch on the back of his calf which I've absolutely no idea where it came from and its driving me nuts! He just has no fear....its frightening! He was sitting next to his ball pit the other day which is not supportive at all as is just full of air and he decided to grab it and just stood up! Not holding on to anything else - just stood up with his ball put in both hands! Nearly peed my pants!

newmum001 · 06/06/2011 20:47

Chelle which leg is the scratch on? Could be your engagement ring that's done it Grace kept getting scratches on her legs and i realised it was my ring causing them, obviously i'm more careful now Grin

Grace also has tantrums, i've been saying no and walking away too. I don't think there's much else we can do at this stage as they wouldn't really understand. It seems like all i do these days is say bloody no! I took her to the park the other day and she had the mother of all tantrums when i tried to put her back into her pram to come home. Same the other day when my mum and sister came for tea, my sister put her in her baby walker so we could eat and she went berserk crying and shouting mama mama mama mama mama over and over again!

saoirse86 · 07/06/2011 10:48

newmum Whenever I said to anyone while I was working that they might want to buy a different ring, like an eternity style ring maybe, if they plan on having a child, they always thought I was doing a sales pitch. As it happens I'm crap at sales and most of the time I was talking them into spending less! Confused

Chelle Orlaith's started to have tantrums too and I'm not sure what to do. She often has a tantrum so I put her down sitting on the floor and she flings herself back so she hits her head. Then she cries and looks at me like "look what you did, I just hurt my head because of you!". Shock When did they get so clever?!

patito I hope you all get well soon. Smile

Debs75 · 07/06/2011 12:04

How often do your LO's poo?
Lucy has been pooing about 6-7 times a day, usually a marble sized soft one. She doesn't strain so I don't think she is constipated but sometimes she does 3 over the space of an hour so she is maybe struggling to poo it all. Then sometimes she does a huge egg sized one so now not sure what is happening down there. All I will say is thank god for re-usable nappies.

She doesn't tantrum as such but when she is overtired or hungry she tries to force her head towards my boobs. It looks quite comical as she headbutts me until I put her in the right position, then she gives a little giggle to herself and starts to feed.

I thiobnk she also said Mama yesterday, she hasn't said it again but she was watching me walk away and mumbled something at me.

SeaChelles · 07/06/2011 12:05

Nope newmum, defo not my engagement ring. Looked all over the house and am stumped - no idea what he did it on.... Hmm

Been to see two more nursery's this morning. They were both nice, however one was £38/day and one was £33/day, doesn't sound like a lot of difference on paper but thats, £15 a week or £60 odd quid a month difference. I just can't believe how expensive it is. I know thats what the price is and thats that....it just makes finding a suitable job even harder.... Sad

SeaChelles · 07/06/2011 12:07

Debs - Olly varies with poop - its rare that he doesnt go at all but it has happened before. His normal poop routine (hehehe!) is one at about 8:30am and then a massive one later on about 6pm. Sometimes he does another little one at lunchtime.

saoirse86 · 07/06/2011 12:37

Debs Orlaith does one big soft one a day normally. Is it soft or quite solid?

Seachelles I know, it's so expensive. It makes no sense for me to go to work. I'll end up earning about £8 per day after paying for it. I really need to look into working tax credits and things because surely the government haven't worked it so people like me are almost forced to stay at home not working and getting income support. That's just madness! Confused

SeaChelles · 07/06/2011 12:51

Saoirse - the government are damn right awful! We literally get £40 a month tax credit and the standard child benefit. Our tax credits actually went down when I got made redundant! Because that makes sense doesn't it - we're down £24k a year and they REDUCE the tax credits.....makes me laugh! We don't get any other help at all because DP apparently earns too much! Even though we have 0 expendable income and DP doesn't see half of his pay as after police pension and all the other crap they have to pay out its ridiculous! Sorry rant over! No way could we even consider having another baby - imagine having to pay 2 x nursery fee's!

newmum001 · 07/06/2011 13:08

Need advice, Grace seemed to have a cold yesterday, very snotty, eyes watering and a bit of a cough but today all symptoms seem to have gone but she will not eat anything. This morning she point blank refused to have even a spoonful of breakfast, tried her with a yoghurt which she usually wolfs down but she only had 4 spoons of that. She's eaten a little bit of dinner and another couple of spoonfuls of yoghurt. She's having all her milk and she's drank a lot of juice so she's not dehydrated do i need to worry. She's normally such a good eater i'm not used to this at all. She seems fine in herself she's very chatty and she's playing with her toys and she slept fine last night and this morning. She's clingier than usual and has spent a lot of time on my knee (which she never does and i'm secretly loving it) Sounds like she's just a bit off colour doesn't it. If she's still having her milk and juice i don't need to worry do i?

Debs75 · 07/06/2011 14:30

Saoirse They are soft but formed IYSWIM They definitely aren't runny.
