Sorry bit boring I know but I didn't want to make any reference to spot as I don't want to jinx her and have her baby come early, then it would be my fault. Also didn't want the mad rush at the end of the thread. This way we've had plenty of time.

MomOrMum · 30/11/2010 15:50

ZJ - Not sure what kind of books she might like, but here are some that I have either read or heard of recently that are supposed to be good reads but nothing too mentally taxing in case that's not her thing:
The Help, Kathryn Stockett
The Post Birthday World, Lionel Shriver
One Day, David Nicholls
American Wife, Curtis Sittinfeld

Rubena · 30/11/2010 15:51

Sorry JJ - don't tell MrJJ he will hate me. That was just straight from our friend GP's mouth as he said I'm a GP's worst nightmare Hmm

Beans33 · 30/11/2010 16:12

Oh JB - I am so sorry to hear about your friends and their early pregnancy. V sad indeed. I am thinking of them. It has recently happened to a friend of a friend of mine in similar situation. They had to terminate the pregnancy, which is so so sad. I really hope that doesn't happen for them, but if it does, then I honestly believe that it is better to know sooner than later. I am sending love and thoughts to you and them.

Spot - waterworks are way forward. Flood them with tears!

DD2 and I are hanging today while DD1 is at nursery. I have only been outside to get rid of snow on windscreen of car so can collect DD1 easily - and my feet are still cold.

spotofcheerfulness · 30/11/2010 19:19

Well I didn't have to put on my worst ham acting (just as well as I am truly awful) - the GP was great, said it looked like this current one was under control so we wouldn't need antibios, but was perfectly amenable to my request for a referral. Just said I shouldn't get my hopes up as they prob won't do anything and some kids are just prone to multiple respiratory infections and grow out of it. But I will be pleased to hear it from the horse's mouth. T seems much better in himself anyway - he was v funny in the docs, walked right up to the doctor and pulled his jumped up so he could listen to his chest. Poor mite knows the drill by now!

JB v sorry to hear about your friend, what a horrible situation. I'm afraid I don't have any advice on supporting having not been in your or their shoes, but I would guess letting them know you're there but not being too in their face would prob be most tactful. The fact that she's already shared the info with you means she's prob open to talking about it anyway, but of course it must make things trickier with your own pregnancy.

Rubes sorry you had a bad night too, I think there are some really horrid viruses going around that are just staying. And I'm afraid that it's the flip side of these toddler groups - they're fab for you and DS to socialise in, but an absolute breeding ground for germs...

LadyThompson · 30/11/2010 20:19

Spot, that is such good news about the referral. I was about to wade in with my tips on how to bend a GP to your iron will but now I don't need to! Had a bit of an annoying day to say the least - more later.........

zoejeanne · 30/11/2010 20:54

Well I did get to work today, but not until 11.30, and then I left at 4, so not a difficult day really. And I?ve loaded up with stuff that can be done at home, so if the roads are bad tomorrow I can stay put and enjoy a snuggly lie in with DD

Thanks for all your reassurance that DD is just the same as all the others with her stubborn streak, it is very comforting. And whoever said it is about control or the inability to communicate has got it dead right ? I can really see both of those in DD now I think about it. Thank you

Trace we had the cuddle problem fun with DD, and always ended up bringing her into our bed. It really annoyed me after a while, as she?s so wriggly and kicky in her sleep. The biggest problem was getting her back into the cot once we?d got her out, she just screamed like we were trying to kill her. So we made a rule that we don?t get her out of the cot ? now if she wants a drink, we pass it to her, if she wants a cuddle, she gets one through the bars. It meant a couple of v uncomfortable nights, with arms squeezed through the bars for hours, but she soon got used to it and last night it took less than 5 minutes for her to lie down again after a quick hug (so quick, my bed was still warm when I got back in!)

Poor MrT Spot, these infections are relentless. At least the GP was sympathetic. I did giggle at the image of your clinging to the doorframe and various medical stuff trying to prise you off Grin

I love reading that list MoM, should we update the names of those with new ones now? Its quite bizarre, reading about Cat and KMP and so on (although for some reason Urbane is still Lal in my head, and Veggie will always be Veggie)

Jolly so sad for your friends, and so difficult when their relationship is still so new too. I can?t offer any advice I?m afraid, but agree with Spot that as they?ve told you they probably want to be able to talk about it

Lots of good ideas for my secret santa book ? I know the person I?m buying for must like books, as that is her hint, but other than a lengthy discussion about Harry Potter, I don?t think I?ve ever talked books with her so I don?t have a clue what she reads. She has 2 teenage daughters, so naturally her main hobby is taxi-ing them around, leaving no time for herself. MoM?s suggestion for a good read that isn?t too taxing sounds perfect, and I do like Jolly?s idea of a Christmassy one. Thanks!

Happy birthday to Deidre, and to Matthew and Sarah for tomorrow. X

TheInvisibleHand · 30/11/2010 22:26

Well, I made it out and back without too much mishap, just a scenic taxi ride to avoid the lanes and hills, but it was fine. Did lose annoying client at the station as he'd lost his ticket, the train was pulling out and it was a 1 hour wait on a cold platform otherwise. Nice client I was with tried to get in touch and make sure he was OK and it turned out he left his iphone behind where we had been for the meeting....its the bank of karma at work (thanks for that thought LadyT)

Vag - the heathrow trip was all the Zs - I was on the way to Zagreb via Zurich. V glad I came home instead of getting stranded in Zurich, although at one point thinking about a sleeper train which sounded exciting until I thought about having to try and work the next day. And I would have missed the train anyway.

Spot - glad you got the referral. I hope it helps. A good specialist can just spot stuff and if you are lucky fix it - its magic. My sis took 3 month old DN to see one the other day (only doctor paranoia, no real issues) and he could tell she was a sicky baby just by looking at her.

JB - so sorry for your friend.

Nice to see you MoM

LadyThompson · 30/11/2010 22:29

I do hope none of our number had any snow disasters today.

Yes, ZJ, apparently a lot of it to do with frustration is because they don't have the words and you are supposed to sit down with them after these tantrums and try to help them find the words. DD1, and I adore her, but she can be like a little demon - several times a day. It really saps the strength but I try to think that she can't help it. Know that it's not just you. And O has said 'yes' maybe twice in her life. She told me the apple she was eating this afternoon was "crunchy", "yummy", and "tasty". But she will not say "yes". Sorry you didn't get your snow day, and I think you were after a non-fiction book for your friend for the Secret Santa. Will post suggestions later - honest!

Invis - talking of books - I don't think I have ever had a spell where I have read so little! I haven't even finished The Slap yet! I am so impressed at your Booker feat, I haven't done that for years. Anyway, once things settle I will be back into it again. I want to read some of the few Graham Greenes and John Updikes I haven't read, and also I have never read The Moonstone and I feel like something cosy and C19th so that might fit the bill. I suppose books keep you company on your travels, they would me. Any goodies lately? I am always interested to hear.

WG - DD1 loves Mr sodding Tumble. She cups her hands and calls for him with the EXACT intonation he uses. She needs no prompting to pick her nose, either....

JB, I am so sorry to hear about your poor friends. That is so sad. The trouble is, I don't think there is anything one can say to comfort in that situation, except acknowledge that it's devastating.

Yes, love to Matthew and Sarah for tomorrow. JJ, I hope you aren't offended by our GP chat. DD1's is a gem as I am sure your DH is.

Sorry about the specs, Vag. That is a pain! Is it just the frames? Can you run them into an optician to fix?

I don't know what's happening on the 20th now, in terms of coffee and cheer at mine for Vag, Rubes and anyone else who fancies it Sad In that, when I went over to the house today to let the chimney sweep in (we have two chimneys, one for the fire and one for the wood burner, from whence the entire house is heated and where the hot water comes from) the lovely gentle sweep, like one from a storybook all covered in soot, said both are in such a bad way he couldn't sweep them and we need a specialist and replacement bits and it will probably cost quite a bit and we are likely not to be able to get it sorted in time to move in before Christmas. The specialist bloke is coming tomorrow morn but it ain't looking good.

The trip to the house is two buses in the snow, interspersed with lots of waits at freezing country bus stops without shelters as most buses are hourly. Just awful. It's about 4 or 5 miles away and there and back and the short appt with the sweep took me the best part of 6hrs today - to ass insult to injury.

I am glad to hear you are feeling ok still, Mom, and you are right about the cute stuff in John Lewis - DD1 had such a cute tea set and a cake stand that came from there for her birthday - she LOVES it.

As for the illness, we are over the voms here but I have had earache since last night. Ouch. What do I do with that, apart from go to the doctor which I haven't got time to do?

More to say but need to order a mattress for London.

TheInvisibleHand · 30/11/2010 22:40

LadyT - as I think I have said before, I really like the Persephone list for lovely comforting old fashioned reads. Moonstone is great - its a long time since I read it, but it is a satisfying victorian doorstop without being terribly demanding. From the booker list: Stuggled a bit with C, the Peter Carey was v good but took a while to warm up. Room was striking, but because its written from the child's point of view it is a bit uncomfortably relentless. I have a soft spot for Howard Jacobson and I am glad he finally got the prize, but will admit that I don't think it was his best - structure is better than his other books, but somehow less interesting at the same time. Kalooki nights, or even some of the slightly older ones like Mighty Walzer are better. Books are one of my great joys in life - so yes, when I travel but also whenever I can squeeze it in - which I am afraid makes me more neglectful of real life than I should be.

TheInvisibleHand · 30/11/2010 22:42

And boo sucks to chimney trouble. That sounds like a very frustrating day. Hope to hear of dickensian sweep xmas magic tomorrow

Rubena · 30/11/2010 23:12

Oh Lady, I'm sorry to hear about your chimney issues. It will all be totally worth it in the end. You will have a beautiful house, with 2 working chimneys, and your drivers license, and you will look back and hardly remember the pain you are going through with it all now. Not nearly as bad to drive 4 miles in the car to hear all that as getting on buses etc in this awful (but pretty if indoors) weather. You can always come here if Vag can too, or if not of course anytime, and have Christmas cheer at mine if you haven't moved by then, but I have a feeling you will have, I really do.
And dd1's behaviour is def the norm. (Well that's what I'm starting to believe since she's almost sounding similar to ds not long after he first starting walking and becoming very independant)

We have had snow here. DH got home at a respectable hour so I was able to nick out in the car and pick up ds's birthday present/s and some Lovely steak for dinner.

Spot, I'm so glad you got the referral. You're doing everything you can and I bet you feel so much better. I hope the appointment comes soon for you and sending stay inside baby vibes to your ds2 Smile
I didn't actually make the connection to the toddler groups and the cold ds has had and conjunctivitis etc. Could well be Confused he loves it sooooooo much though so I think I'll have to just stock up on Neurofen and Medised and keep on going. a lot of sickness now will help them out later anyway, however he hasn't even come close to T's history of illness, so T will be a picture of health come school age, and he'll be invinsible Grin

Rubena · 30/11/2010 23:19

Oh and JB..... really very sad to hear about your friends pregnancy Sad Don't know what to say but it's just one of those things sadly Sad

LadyThompson · 30/11/2010 23:29

No energy to say anything other than thanks Rubes Smile and night night. You and your steak Grin Hope your illnesses are FINALLY on the wane.

Invis, I have a sneaky fondness for Howard Jacobson as well.

VagolaJahooli · 01/12/2010 08:00

Morning ladies, up since 5, have managed to catch up but too uncaffeinated to post. Will rectify this and get back later.

OP posts:
waitinggirl · 01/12/2010 08:47

oh, vag - sorry it's been an early one for you. not meaning to brag, as actually i am quite concerned about this, but madam is STILL ASLEEP and it is 8.45. this is at least 2 hours longer than usual. she goes to sleep at 8, has been unwell for a while - spent the last 3 nights hopping in and out of bed with us, tends to wake between 6&7 normally, so this is way out of character. hmmm... she has coughed a few times, so i know she's still with us as it were (always in the back of my mind).

invis - really impressed with your literary criticism on the hop! must start reading again. what on earth was my degree about if i'm not reading these days. am on the last 100 pages or so of the corrections. finding it really hard to make myself get down to it. please inspire me, is it worth it, anyone?

ps - i see howard jacobson with regularity - you must do, too, invis - he's always hanging around mus hill. along with clive owen, sophie okenedo, les dennis, mike sargeant and some boy off a boyband whom i don't know. i'm wittering. sorry. should make use of my free time.

SummerLightning · 01/12/2010 09:12

Stop wittering wg and go read some improving literature.

Oh I am sure madam is just doing extra sleeping to recover from bug. That's what ds did last time he was ill. Was quite nice! I had a fab nights sleep last night - dd didn't wake til 6 am. Hooray. Had a big fight with dh last night though as she wouldn't settle and dh said I should leave her to cry. Which I will for a bit to see if she settles down but not let her cry it out! Poor little thing.

Anyway sorry about the early wake ups vag

lady sorry about the house. That is truly shit. Rubes is right it will all be forgotten eventually and you will have a lovely house. But does not help right now. And that journey sounds awful. In this awful weather too. Hopefully you will be able to pass your test and get a little car when the house is done and your life will be transformed!

Happy birthday Sarah and matthew.

Dh has the day off today and we are going on an Xmas steam train. Ds will be delighted. Though I asked him if he wanted to see a steam train in real life this morning and he said "no, ipad". So maybe we should stay home with the ipad and YouTube!

JamInMyWellies · 01/12/2010 10:26

Happy Birthday Sarah and David!

Lady what an absoloute fecker I really feel for you, Euromillions? Bump off an elderly rich but no loved scrooge type relative? Maybe put standing on those country lanes for buses to good use, waggle a leg and see if you can earn an extra fiver that way. Wink Sorry my love I know the money thing is appalling. Really hope something comes through for you soon.

JB what awful sad news for your friends. I have a friend who is 24wks along in her pregnancy and is in a similar dreadful situation baby may not even survive the pregnancy she was given 7 days to decide to terminate but couldnt do it. So her life is all over the place. Terribly sad but I would say talk and offer as much suport as you can. We went out for dinner together a couple of wks ago and of course there was horrible moments where we were all upset. She said it was good to get out and laugh and be normal for a bit.

Vag hope you are caffinated up I am about to go and grab some full fat coke as feel shocking today proper snottastic.

Back later have severe whinging to do about my mother. Need some advice on whether I am being totally unreasonable.

Must make beds and tidy the kitchen. Am I the only one who spends all day forever tidying up the kitchen?

VagolaJahooli · 01/12/2010 10:37

Right have had one coffee and a bracing walk around the block with DS2. So am feeling a little more awake but have lost the feeling in my extremities. Was a successful trip. Got DS2 some more hardcore gloves and a balaclava for DS1 as he gets a cold head under his helmet on the way into school.

Spot well done on the referral. The GP may be right but it could also be that he has glue ear or something and it often gets missed. Our neighbours grandson in London, needed grommits but it took so long to get sorted that he also needed speech therapy as his speech had developed badly due to his compromised hearing.

WG, you skyver. Actually if you think about it, if you'd gone to work you may have been too tired to cook so ended up getting takeaway and therefore spending much of that £60. Instead you had a healthy and frugal soup. You may have actually come out ahead.

Oh gotta go.

OP posts:
EffiePerine · 01/12/2010 10:41

Jam: I should spend forever tidying the kitchen, or even the house. Instead I am slobbing on the sofa with the boys watching tv. Brief play in the snow before they got too cold - it's minus 2 out there. Brrr.

Still dithering over Xmas and birthday pressies here. I'd love to buy a kitchen or a dolls house, but DS2 only interested in cars, bricks and drawing. Hmm.

Happy birthday to Sarah and Matthew :).

VagolaJahooli · 01/12/2010 10:52

Minus 6 here Effie.

Happy birthday Sybtot and miniJJ!

Took the boys to the park yesterday, we fed the ducks, the ducks were actually standing on the pond as it was completely frozen. It's almost thick enough to skate on, is give it another week. We had a snowball fight but it all went pear shaped as DS2's woolen gloves got wet and therefore cold and he had a major meltdown. Made an already unsteady trip in the bike quite dodgy as he wailed and threw himself backwards dramatically on the front of the bike.

Woohoo 1st December today we put of Christmas decorations up today!!! Only putting a small tree up as we won't be here for Christmas. I'm thinking if getting one in a pot so we can grow it bigger for next year.

OP posts:
zoejeanne · 01/12/2010 11:44

Veg you've reminded me that this is your second Christmas on the continent, time is just flying. We got a tree in a pot last year and we're looking forward to using it again

LadyT I hope todays chimney sweep brings good news and can sort your chimneys out. I was going to suggest you just move in anyway, and cosy it up with Christmas cheer - but then I read that it will affect your hot water too - so that's probably unthinkable (even for me - who moved into a house without windows, age 12, but at least it had hot water)

WG DD always has mega sleeps when she's coming down with something, which generally means I can't enjoy them as I'm worrying about what is to come. I agree with Summer that she's probably just getting over her bug

Well, I'm supposed to be working from home (after a nightmare journey to and from work), so must crack on (but will lurk, of course!)

Beans33 · 01/12/2010 12:02

Wow, it is nipsome out there. Just went on jaunt with DD2 to shops and forgot my gloves. Total spanner.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MATTHEW AND SARAH! I can't believe they're all being 2. Absolutely extraordinary. DD1 on Monday. Weep. I want to keep her a little girl forever.

Lady - you poor thing. That's just so irritating to find out when you really just want to get weaving with it all.

WG - I am so envious of that sleeping in - I'm sure it's your DD recovering - did you take advantage of it?

DD is terrified of snow. Literally, properly frightened. She wails if you try to put her in it and yesterday I picked her up from nursery in the car and I had to carry her from the door to the car, while holding DD2 in her car seat. DD1 was scrambling up me, trying to get as far away from the snow as possible, all the while crying. Any tips on how to get her to like it??! EEK. I think there could be rather a lot of it this winter...

We're decorating etc this weekend. And having DD1's birthday on Sunday. Just the 4 of us and I'm going to make a chocolate cake for us. Yummers. I'm already drooling and DD1 already requesting it! Marvellous. Must get ingredients...

urbanewarrior · 01/12/2010 13:41

Hello chaps. Having been into work this am I'm now going home as our nanny is not unreasonably scared of driving in the snow. So going to make Christmas cards and mince pies and generally potter with the children. Much nicer Grin.
Ladyt that is dreadful about the house. You poor thing. Any chance someone should have spotted before like in the survey? Rubes is absolutely right that nightmares receede - we found out our house had dry rot after we moved in and couldn't move and cost £££ to fix but all forgotten now. But doesn't change immediate disappointment. Is it worth getting another opinion?
Think we won't now be travelling to Buxton tomorrow night. Which is shame as was looking forward to seeing my brother and the girls.
Bloody hell am boring myself. Will come back when I have something more interesting to say...
Happy birthday Sarah and matthew. Hope you're having lovely daysGrin

LadyThompson · 01/12/2010 14:14

Well, a snowy good afternoon to you all...we didn't get more snow here but it is el brasso monkeys. Got home half an hour ago after leaving the house at 9 to meet the chimbley specialist. Headline news is, they do need linings put in and the main one needs summat else that I can't remember (my brain glazed over at the technical details, I am a cliche like that) and he can't do it until after Christmas, so that's that, no moving in until sometime in January. Blinking marvellous. However, I refuse to get myself into a state about it, even though I am annoyed/disappointed. We do at least have a roof over our heads here at DP's flat, and it's warm and there's lots of hot water. We are going to have to lump it, and move as much stuff over there as we can (and try to finish off the other bits) in the meantime.

DP is picking up a hire car this afternoon so at least we will have wheels for now...

Jam, I liked your idea for raising a few funds as I wait by the bus stop Grin Not sure there'd be many takers, not how I looked this morning! And kitchens never stay tidy. And yes, come and moan about your mother.

Oh, Urbane, we had a full structural survey but chimneys are out of their scope. Sorry about Buxton - bet it's super snowy up there...

Back later, DP is back...

KiwiPanda · 01/12/2010 16:27
