goodname gizmo speaks huge amounts of sense (as usual). I agree, don't worry about feeding to sleep. The important thing is just to get him to sleep. I used to feed DD1 to sleep, she learnt to self settle in her own time and has been a fantastic sleeper for ages now (first started sleeping through at 6 months).

Alice seems to have given up sleep at the moment, but I'm feeding her to sleep when I can.

Don't feel bad for taking some time away from Fergus. I'm terrible for trying to do it all myself, and especially if you're breastfeeding its so easy to feel that you can't leave the baby at all. We've not evolved to look after our babies in isolation but to have the support of a tribe of extended family, so don't feel bad about taking any help that is offered to you, and making DH do his fair share - you're not supposed to be able to do it all on your own.

mampam i've no experience to add, but agree that you need to push hard for referrals, given your pregnancy experiences.

I think we've hit the 17 week growth spurt a bit early here (15.5 weeks now) as Alice has just wanted to feed, feed, feed all day. She hasn't slept at all today except when feeding. Am hoping she's well tanked up for the night now :)

greensnail · 10/09/2010 14:20

Oh and one more thing goodname do you have a sling? Its my one guaranteed way to get Alice to sleep when all else fails so might be worth a try. Of course, its not so great if you need to sleep too, but maybe if he can get a decent nap in the sling then he'll be less overtired and better able to settle in the evening or at night.

latrucha · 10/09/2010 14:57

A non-sleeping baby is hellish. My sympathies.

A baby who squiggles so much he bashes the side of the cot and wakes Mummy even when he's asleep is not fun either. Any suggestions?

Tired, tired here. Spanish visitors here for ten days so am having to speak another language and my fridge in which was stored my stash of made food for them is broken. Also, DD has told me she doesn't want to eat food any more. Sigh....

Onwards and upwards in LaT's house...

goodname · 10/09/2010 17:25

Thanks for all the sympathy everyone, it feels good. Not feeling so bad today, fergus was a bit better last night and DH was not working today so he took him after his morning feed and I got 2 hours of uninterupted sleep which was nice. He slept in between us last night as when we put him in his bed he woke up screaming every time. This is strange as he normally likes his bed better, anyway quite liked having him next to me and was easier to settle him between feeds.
I must say that even though I sound like I am at wits end, I do still find him very adorable during the day, specially when he laughs which almost makes up for everything else. almost! Oh and greensnail I am terrible at thinking only i can look after fergus properly. I realise I should chill out a bit more but find it tough. What is happening with your non sleeping baby btw? Sounds bad.
Have put in an offer on a house today so quite scared, dont quite know if I will be glad if its accepted or not, think I am probably crazy to even think about trying to sell our house just now. I want to move for Fergus though, the new house is next door to a wee park and across from a big park in a small village with a nice school and at present we live in town not close to any parks and with a v big primary school. DH and I both lived in country growing up and i kind of want the same thing for fergus. Anyway we will see what happens.
La T Fergus always squirms like that when he has wind, he calms down when he has pumped usually, have not worked out how to solve this yet though, sorry. Sounds tough having visitors for 10 days, hope they are helpful visitors.

greensnail · 10/09/2010 21:21

Glad to hear you sounding a bit brighter goodname. A slept a bit better last night and managed a decent nap this morning (through DD1's music group of all places) so am feeling a bit better about her sleep now. Fingers crossed for tonight. She's currently conked out on our bed, but i'll transfer her to her cot when I go to bed. I've put my top that i was wearing today into the cot, hoping that she will settle better with it smelling of me.

I'd thought DD1 was dropping her afternoon nap, but she slept really well this afternoon, so all in all I'm feeling more positive on the sleep front.

Exciting news about the possible housemove, goodname. Is it in the same general area? We used to live in Fife and miss it very much.

Good luck with the visitors LaT. DD1 went through a phase of eating very little after Alice was born, although it could have been due to the fact she was having huge amounts of milk. She's eating well again now, so hope its just a brief phase for you too.

madamefreckle · 10/09/2010 22:49

LaT - You've got a lot on! And that sounds like some serious squiggling!! Cot bumpers? When Emma is windy she just propels herself to the top of her cot and drills a hole into the end with her head. So much for foot-to-foot positioning!

goodname - The new house sounds like it's in a lovely location! So is your house on the market yet? (I just typed 'meerkat'...the frightening power of advertising!) I would never be able to sell our house at the moment...there is stuff EVERYWHERE! Glad you had a better night anyway. Must be lovely when Fergus laughs... a milestone that Emma hasn't yet reached.

Mampam- How rubbish for you - I think you really do need to get referred. What is Tilly weighing now? You say she still seems happy and if she seems generally well in herself, I wouldn't get too worried about her but would still push for the referral. It's just a huge pain in the butt for you if you're having to clean up all the time and if you're exhausted. Even if it's something she might grow out of in the next month or so, I'd still say to your GP that you want to be seen asap.

madamefreckle · 10/09/2010 22:52

Oh, and Filly, thanks for that! Gotta love that woman's passion...but CRINGE!!!!

fillybuster · 13/09/2010 10:46

Apologies for my utter crapness the last couple of weeks but things have been more than a little hectic in the filly-household...

Our nanny sprained her ankle just before the bank holiday weekend and ended up off work for a couple of weeks - managing 3 children under 5 with no school/clubs etc at the end of the school hols was fine but left no time or energy for anything else! Grin It didn't help that we had to deal with all the back-to-school stuff for DS1, the getting-ready-for-pre-school-nursery stuff for DD1 and the preparing-everything-for-5th-birthday=party stuff for DS1 at the same time tho....hence the deeply frazzled state Biscuit

Aaaaanyway....my cousin's wedding went well (thanks in part to magic pants) and DH and I enjoyed an evening out with just Mia in tow when MIL took the older dcs home after the reception; DS started back at school and his birthday party went well - as did his cake; and DD1 started at nursery and loves it :) :) :) Lots of pics on profile if you're interested!

Mia is 12 weeks tomorrow and mostly being utterly brilliant. (If you're sleep deprived look away now...) She's the original clockwork baby, happily chugging along on a 3 hour routine and now sleeping right through the night without any settling etc required - we even had to wake her at 8.15 both days of the weekend ShockShock when the other dcs woke up :)

She has also pretty much found her thumb the last few days, which is great, although I share the general longer term trepidation as DD1 (2.5) has to be reminded not to suck hers the whole time...but its sooo worth it right now and DS1 did stop of his own accord at around a year.

Welcome back gizmo - I was going to send out a search party! Glad Hester is doing so well. In response to your question - I'm quite flexible about the sleeping part of the routine this time, as I need to be able to move Mia mid-sleeps on a regular basis. On the whole, I try to feed her on time and keep her awake for the rest of the 1.5 hours, then if we're at home I'll settle her in her cot, and if we're out I'll let her drop off if/when she's ready. Generally if I shift her into her car seat mid-sleep she'll doze off again but I try not to get too worked up about it. On average 50% of her daytime naps are proper, and the others are a bit hit and miss but she sleeps if she's tired enough. Does that help?

Goodname, sorry I can't help, but I feel your pain and it will get better. Hang in there, and just do whatever it takes...

SmilerJane · 13/09/2010 14:04

Hiya all...
I have just found this thread and wanted to say hello.. I hope you dont mind? I havent read all posts as theres so many lol
Congratulations on everybody and their LOs Grin
My lil princess is 13wks (14wks fri) now and i havent had 1 full nights sleep yet... She was due the 23rd july but was born 11th june 4lb 14 :0) Having a prem baby is much harder than full term as theres so much to think about.
She has hit her 1st milestine fine but thats it up tonow. i know all babies are different but its hard having to think of her as a 7wk old as development goes!
She suffers from reflux which is a pain and on gaviscon for babies to help.
She doesnt sllep well.. awakes ever 2-3hrs still for feeds but sometimes (rarely) sleeps from 1am-4am then put her dummy in
and she'll sleep till 6am-7am..
Shatted as have other DC to look after too. ( they are DD 3 and DS 8 ) (4 and 9 in jan Grin )
Just wish she'd sleep so i can get back on track with the housework!
Anyway hope to chat again as i dont chat to many as always busy lol
T care all

filly your so lucky lol :) Envy lol
Nice to meet you

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/09/2010 21:28

Welcome smilerjane :).

Great pics filly.

Am dead on feet here. Both boys have colds so sleep even worse (if that's possible!).

Ds2 seems to be able to roll front to back already Hmm.

OP posts:
SmilerJane · 13/09/2010 22:18

Thanks Grin
Poor you.. horrible when LOs arent well and i hate colds.. Thinkthats worse that a tummy bug because at least you can sleep if ill.. You dont get a good nights sleep if you have a cold!
Good on your DS@ for rolling.. yay Grin
My princess is 3mths but because was 6 wks prem her development is behind :(
She's smiling and just starting to try make noises and trying to giggle but thats it..
Its hard with a prem as you calculate their age from their due date not their birth date.. so theoretically shes only classed as 7wks x

Nice to meet you cantsleepwontsleep

latrucha · 14/09/2010 10:00

Welcome SmilerJane! So her development is bang on really Grin

You look fabulous Filly and so do LOs

Yep. Colds here too. The temperature has changed and everyone has that thousand mile stare. Guests still here so only brief.

Daniel amazes me. This morning I put him under his mobile and he just giggled away for ages, then fell asleep. Only Filly will appreciate how incredible this is for me as she well remembers my high-maintenance DD!

Oh, and he only fed once between 10 and 7.30 - but that's probably because he has a cold.

DD also slept Smile and is now at nursery and I'm off to complete my folder for breastfeeding helper training. I start training as a supporter on Saturday. Yippeee! (Though how much I take in with DD and Daniel with me, I don't know...)

So, happy days Smile

greensnail · 14/09/2010 14:19

Welcome SmilerJane.

Colds here too. Alice's sleep is going from bad to worse at the moment, the days of her doing an 8 hour stretch seem like a distant memory. Someone remind me this is just normal 4 month old stuff, plus a cold as thoughts such as formula and early weaning have crossed my mind in the early hours of the morning which are very far from the choices I would make when not sleep deprived!

Alice is very far off being able to roll, but DD1 was quite late with all the gross motor development (except for sitting, she must take after me!) so I'm not expecting great things.

Barbeasty · 14/09/2010 19:51

Another one with a cold here- it really must be that time of year.

Ruth loved her swimming lesson, especially with just 3 of us in the class! But she quickly came down with the cold once we were home.

On the plus side, after some horrid snotty sleepless nights, we only woke up at 3am this morning, so 4 and 3hrs sleep. She's restless now though so not so hopefull for tonight...

SmilerJane · 15/09/2010 14:04

thanks for welcoming me Grin

Shares my Choc mars planets and about to make a cuppa tea if anyone wants one? Grin

Latrucha her development is good for her recalculated age Grin so doin well.. apart from feeding is a nightmare as she has reflux and is sick alot.. had to change her 4x yesterday and that doesnt incl the amount of muslin squares/bibs/moses basket covers i have to go throu daily..

Greensnail Thanks :)

barbeasty I'm dreading jorgia getting her 1st cold being prem :( poor ruth :(

Hope its ok to rant a little on here!
Men! My DP is doing my head in.. And where do i start! Firstly i cant remember the last time i had a decent evenings sleep and he sleeps straight through 11/12 till 8.30/9.30.. i am up at night feeding (1am and 6am) or sorting Jorgia out as she seems unsettled at around 4am but doesnt want a bottle so have to put her dunny in every half hr till morning! I tried waking DP to feed her and took 10 mins to wake him properly he went got bottle then fed her.. i was nearly back off to sleep then she kept crying (5 mins of winding does not work with her) i do it for half hr sometimes as she holds it in! Because he just let her cry saying he dont know what to do as she wont stop he then replied

whenwillisleepagain · 15/09/2010 21:38

How brilliant to come on this thread! Colds here too - Alice is awash with another one today. Sleepwise, it's all going backwards bigtime - I am feeling frazzled, but found it so helpful to read the advice on here. I too was worrying about bf to sleep, but instinctively feel it's best not to tackle quite yet - and Alice has just about moved from sucking her wrist to getting her thumb in, so I have high hopes!

She had last round of immunisations today, cannot believe she was born 17 weeks ago this morning.

sunworshipper I am way behind on reading this thread, but sorry to see you had 2 such nasty bouts of mastitis

mampam sorry you are having a time of it... hope you get what you need

will read the thread more thoroughly tomorrow and catch up on everyone's news - welcome smilerj*

SmilerJane · 15/09/2010 22:02

Thanks whenwillisleepagain

I'm Envy of people that can BF :(
I so wish i could of but was let down by everything and everyone...

17wks goes so fast xx

I wish i could sleep properly as frzzled too! Maybe one day hey :)

Hope Alice feels better vey soon ((HUGS))

Just settled my lil miss but she due for another feed in an hr so enough time to check MN make a cuppa before feeding and hope she falls straight off so i can get my head down! (doubt it'll happen like that but i can hope Grin

Night All Grin

goodname · 16/09/2010 14:05

Hi smilerjane, welcome, men are really good at playing the helpless, i dont know how to stop them crying card! Can you not ask hime nicely (make him) get up at7;30 with the others or do more in the day to help out? My dh is not much use at night but he will look after fergus whenever he can during the day, he also cooks dinner etc. Oh and symapathies on the burping front, Fergus was like that to start with but is much better now, for some reason as he got older his wind started coming out of his bottom more!
Greensnail sympathies, I felt like that about formula etc with Fergus as his sleeping was going downhill so badly. Dont think it would make much difference though. Have just got a book called the wonder weeks which explains what happens at different fussy times, Alice and Fergus are in the middle of one just now which apparently should improve at 19 weeks (seems a bit far away just now though if you ask me).
I am still totally wrecked here but Fergus is getting cuter and funnier in the day time so that helps somehow Smile
Hope everyone else is well and that the colds get better soon. Was thinking about taking fergus to swimming lessons, what are they like barbeasty?

SmilerJane · 16/09/2010 15:34

Afternoon goodname

I am wondering if my DP read my post somehow as this morning he sent me back to bed after 3hrs sleep (lil miss unsettled) and i slept till 2.45 and he took DS to school then DD nursery and just left me to soundly sleep lol.. I am just waiting for him to get back from getting kids..
best go he back lol
wanna go hug my kids
Thanks for welcoming me
Grin

greensnail · 16/09/2010 15:40

Thanks goodname, I have heard of wonder weeks (probably when I was going through the same thing last time around!) but never actually read it so that's good to know, thanks. She's actually suddenly improved and the last 2 nights has just been up at midnight and 4am, which I'm happy with. Daytimes seeming a little easier now too, although yesterday evening was pretty hellish, but I think that was just down to 2 bad colds and one case of man flu!

SmilerJane, I find it best with my DH to just leave him to get on with it and make myself busy with something else so he can't just hand the baby back when he's finding it a bit tough. Once he's managed to settle her once, he feels so pleased with himself he wants to do it again!

MrsAlwaysRight · 16/09/2010 16:12

Hi Ladies. Welcome SmilerJane

Not much to report here. Alice is fine - turning into a right chatterbox just like her big sister. She is gurgling away as I type. Sleeping and feeding going well - had her weighed last week and she was 14lb 9oz so still following the 91st centile.

Alice has turned into a dribble monster in the last week or so, have bought her a teething ring today which she has been chomping on. She has also started really lifting her head and upper body up when she is sat in her chair.

DD1 started pre-school yesterday and seems to be enjoying it.

I've booked a spa break with the girls for a night in December. Can't wait Smile

Anyone else a bit broody? A couple of close friends are pregnant with their first and I am actually quite envious. I don't think we will have anymore but definately couldn't say for certain. Wouldn't be very practical to have another but can't imagine never being pregnant again. Have an appointment booked for next month to have coil fitted so won't be happening anytime soon!!

Hope all the LO's with colds get better soon.

greensnail how are things progressing on the house move front?

Barbeasty · 16/09/2010 17:07

I knew the good sleeping wouldn't last! I thought last night was going really well when I liked at the clock, saw 3am and thought great- 5hrs. Next time I looked it was 1.30! Goodness only knows what time she really woke up first time round Hmm

We had several trips to clinic today. 2nd round of jabs this morning, so Ruth is pretty miserable. Then we went back this afternoon to get weighed. 12lb2oz, so spot on for her percentile.

Goodname the swimming was really good. Lots of bobbing up and down, holding Ruth in a swimming position (front and back) and moving her around nan exercise using trigger words to get them holding a bar at the edge, and one to get them holding their breath ready to go under water in a few weeks. Also one where we used a tube-float to hold the baby against you and then go swimming on your back with them on top.

Ruth enjoyed it, and apparently it's easier for her to do some things (especially holding the breath) while she's young. We are practicing the breath holding in the bath
and if nothing else it will make it easier once we have to wash her hair (it involves pouring water over the head) We are learning with Aquatots, but I think there are lots of similar companies out there.

MrsAR- I'm brooch, or at least pretty sure I want a second, but when I half-jokingly mentioned it to DH, he

looked aghast and, holding hands as though telling a fishing story, said "but the needle they put in your back was this big"! Bit more persuasion needed I think Grin

greensnail · 16/09/2010 20:10

MrsAR - still waiting for all the solicitory stuff to happen, so no date as yet. Hopefully will know soon. Will need to get together again before I go - when would be good for you to come over? Drowning in dribble here too - from both girls.

Barbeasty - i thought that about hairwashing too. DD1 did Waterbabies and will happily swim under the water, but still hates having her hair washed.

Barbeasty · 16/09/2010 20:24

Greensnail- my hopes are dashed!

fillybuster · 16/09/2010 20:28

If it helps, MrsAR, I was almost instantly broody after DD1 (DC2) even though I never felt that way before....'twas most odd, and I spent the entire 19 months until we were TTC Mia really aware of how much I wanted another baby. Very strange, partly because I felt that way from the first night after I had DD1, whilst I was still in hospital, and partly because I only ever (originally) wanted 2 DCs Confused....but don't forget you're still full of hormones so give it time!! :) :)

All good here, but still totally hectic, so apologies that I haven't budged the meetup thread along much....will suggest some October dates on there soon! Anyone else up for the London xmas meetup at the end of November? I've just signed up and paid and am now feeling rather scared....!!! CSWS, Minimoo or any of the other Londonish ladies - want to come and hold my hand?

Mia is doing brilliantly - 12 weeks old, sleeping through most nights without a squeak, and bfing nicely...no idea whatsoever how much she weighs though - she's definitely a 3rd child!!! Grin Unfortunately with 3 DCs there's always one having a nightmare or needing something at 3am, so sadly we still don't get that many unbroken nights, but at least it mostly isn't Mia's fault and I don't have to feed anyone :)

Right, DH is stuck in the office and DS has a high temperature, so I'm off to find some cold wine food for dinner and sort the laundry before it gets too late....wishing you all a chilled evening and lots of sleep!
