I really thought he was the very best of the Lib Dems.

Given his fortune he obviously doesn't need the expenses, but hiding his landlord/partner from the authorities is unacceptable, even if it was to hide his sexuality.

I'm completely shellshocked.

I feel for him a bit, by the account I read his family did not know he was gay, tough way to come out.

LeninGrad I agree. I feel sorry for him on a human level but as I understand it, he has broken the letter of the rules - not even just the spirit of the rules as with so many of last year's scandals.

He will have to go

He isn't the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner though!

He is the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and was showing every sign of being an extremely competent one.

it's ridiculous that it wasn't exposed earlier

longfingernailspaintedblue · 28/05/2010 23:05

His defence is saying that his landlord wasn't technically his "partner" because they didn't share bank accounts etc.

As soon as a politician has to argue about details of semantics you know they are in trouble.

from the BBC's site, the relationship between them seems to have been common knowledge amongst his family and friends, so many people probably knew about it.

"Our relationship has been unknown to both family and friends throughout that time."

NoseyNooNoo · 28/05/2010 23:16

What a dickhead - I though he was one of the good guys.

sorry relationship between them was unknown, I read that wrong

claig · 28/05/2010 23:18

surely Cameron will have to act, this can't just be brushed aside easily

longfingernailspaintedblue · 28/05/2010 23:19

He was the big political superstar of the new Cabinet. He had it all.

And now this.

What a foolish lapse of judgement.
