David Laws' expenses

I really thought he was the very best of the Lib Dems.

Given his fortune he obviously doesn't need the expenses, but hiding his landlord/partner from the authorities is unacceptable, even if it was to hide his sexuality.

I'm completely shellshocked.

LeninGrad

Many at the Telegraph absolutely detest Cameron for modernising the Tory party. They want the coalition to fail so a "real" Tory can become leader.

And any newspaper from the Mirror to the Sun would have printed this story. Selling copy comes before any political allegiance.

of course the system is corrupt, there is no escaping it. This is Machiavelli power politics and those in the know hold all the trump cards. It suits them that MPs do wrong, as it gives them power.

Prolesworth, the expenses scandal only exposed some of them. It didn't expose Laws. There are probably others like him. Some people already know about it but are waiting for the right moment to make it public.

agree with you it's not acceptable. We might as well all give up if this is allowed to go unpunished. We'd be better off voting for the inmates of Wormwood Scrubs

jackstarbright · 28/05/2010 23:49

So if Mr Lundie was not David Laws' lover it would have been ok to claim the rent he paid.

Or if Mr Lundie had put David Laws' name on the mortgage deeds - he could have claimed towards the mortgage.

It's not a case of greed, rather an ineffecient expenses system being stretched to cover up David Laws domestic arrangements.

yes he knew, and it compromised his position. People must have known all about it. He must have been prey to those forces. It looks like that didn't bother him. In public life people should act honourably and have high standards. It is an honour to be an MP of this country and they should treat it as such and act respectfully

Outraged by this hypocrite. So much for the Lib Dems holier-than-thou attitude to the expenses scandal. To say they were 'partners' but were not living as 'spouses' - come on, don't treat us like dimwits.

Out he goes!

good point about the LibDems holier that thou attitude about the expenses scandal. I'm sure many of the pious LibDems knew all about this whilst they were castigating the other parties. I suppose reality has just slapped us in the face, just like when the euphoria about Blair's victory in 1997 soon evaporated.

JustAnotherMum2b · 29/05/2010 00:04

No need for conspiracy theories here. Law made his own bed... Also not sure why everyone was getting so giddy about him in the first place. He's only 5mins into th Chief Sec job and is far from having proved himself.

What a banker!

claig · 29/05/2010 00:05

LeninGrad, I agree with you. It is shameful that he is using the fact that he is gay to try and cover up actions that led to pecuniary gain.

Quattrocento · 29/05/2010 00:06

Clearly it has cost him his career. Already. This is only the beginning of the end for him.

I'm uncomfortable with the playing of a homosexuality card. It's irrelevant - always has been, as is right. Isn't he just trying to cover up greed and corruption?
