David Laws' expenses

I really thought he was the very best of the Lib Dems.

Given his fortune he obviously doesn't need the expenses, but hiding his landlord/partner from the authorities is unacceptable, even if it was to hide his sexuality.

I'm completely shellshocked.

I am amazed he hasn't resigned yet. He surely has to.

claig · 28/05/2010 23:21

this smacks of Sir Humphrey. Why has it only surfaced now?

claig

Alastair Campbell looked very smug brandishing a photo of David Laws on Question Time yesterday.

I wonder where the story about David Laws' personal life could possibly have come from?

It's greed. No-one would care about him being gay, but siphoning off so much money to pay his partner is just tacky.

they all seem to know that these things will go public, it's amazing. They just brazen it out until someone spills the beans and pulls the rug out from under them. I bet there are lots more like him holding on by their fingernails.

megcleary · 28/05/2010 23:25

I wonder if they he was claiming then when they got together it would be noted he stopped claiming and attract unwanted attention. I just likes him he had potential I thought to do well.

Quattrocento · 28/05/2010 23:26

It's dishonest, and any MP who had done this needs to be sacked.

harpsichordcarrier · 28/05/2010 23:27

This isn't about his personal life though. no-one really cares about him being gay. it's a total non-issue these days. several out MPs from all the major parties. It's about breaching the rules, and continuing to lie about it.

claig · 28/05/2010 23:27

longfingernailspaintedblue, fascinating info I will watch that on iplayer. At first I thought it might be someone in the coalition, never thought about Labour. Laws did humiliate Burns by exposing the joke letter, so he probably made a few enemies.

I'm sure it was well-known in political circles, it wasn't just discovered 2 days ago. Whoever released the info knew about it for some time. The public is always kept in the dark.

Quattrocento · 28/05/2010 23:32

Just as it was news to Bill Clinton that oral sex is in fact sex, it appears to be news to David Laws that the word partner does in fact include partners ...

plus ca change, they are unfortunately all the same and most of them are shameless and convinced they will be allowed to get away with things. Often they do and we just never find out about it.

harpsichordcarrier · 28/05/2010 23:37

no, not ALL MPs behave like this.
Not ALL business people or MPs lie to make more money. And then lie about it. Really, they don't

rasputin is right that they are all hypocrites, but it is not good enough. If they are doing wrong then they are hostage to those who are in the know and are at their mercy. It means they cannot be independent and make the correct judgements. It means that the system is corrupt.
