Whisper. What about repealing the Hunting Ban?

This has been on my mind since the election, so thought I would post, get flamed, and then name change . If the Conservatives had received a majority in the election, I understood they would repeal the hunting ban, or at least have a free vote. Now that they have teamed up with the Lib Dems, is there any chance? I know it is not the most important thing on anyone's agenda, but it is quite an important subject for a large part of the Conservative heartlands. Any takers? Off to put DD to bed. Back later.

I used to be against fox hunting when younger, I love animals. But since have changed my mind. For many reaons foxes need to be controlled. My DH is from the countryside, can't stand the Labour party, and thinks that they are against the countryside the people and all they stand for, he supports fox hunting. I wouldn't hunt, but don't support the ban, I think the labour party has poked it's nose in far too many things already. Couldn't care less if I get 'flamed' did not know what the term was until I joined MN.

Cameron has sold his soul, very unlikely he will repeal the fox hunting bill, too busy with the love of his life Nick.

elastamum · 13/05/2010 21:49

Ohh, cant see that one seeing the light of day!!!

ravenAK · 13/05/2010 21:50

It's OK by me so long as they hunt Liberals.

Tbh I reckon you're unlikely to get far with this one. It's an easy thing for the Tories to drop as a 'concession' for their new chums, & it's deeply & rightly unpopular with the electorate as a whole.

It would've cost nothing for Cameron to have offered a free vote if he'd got the majority he expected. It'd be bloody silly now he's trying to look all fluffy & non-nasty.

LadyBiscuit · 13/05/2010 21:53

I loathe foxes and think they need controlling. But I don't think you need 60 baying slavering dogs followed by 30 people on huge fuck off horses traipsing across people's fields to kill one fox. There are a lot more efficient ways. If you think hunting is an efficient way of reducing the fox population, you are deluded.

complimentary · 13/05/2010 21:54

RavenAK. You are so right, 'fluffy' is definately the word to describe Cameron.

UnquietDad · 13/05/2010 21:54

I'm hoping it's not a priority. Let them get the country's economy and jobs sorted out first.

whooosh · 13/05/2010 21:57

Firstly-am wholeheartedly with Ladybiscuit!

Regardless,I think thet MAYBE there might be other SLIGHTLY more imortant things for them to focus on than repealing the fox-hunting regs- or at least I hoe there are.....

EddieIzzardismyhero · 13/05/2010 21:58

I agree with LadyBiscuit - it's killing for pleasure that sickens so many people. A vile sport that needs a proper ban. But it is a polarising issue and you won't find many people sitting on the fence about it.

whatwasthatagain · 13/05/2010 22:03

I did say it was not the most important issue, just interested to know what might happen. And Lady Biscuit - huge fuck off horses? What's that all about then? As to control of foxes, no it is certainly not the most efficient. But maybe the fairest?

Do we need to control the fox population?

How many more times foxes are squashed by cars than used to be hunted? (Genuine q, I've forgotten)

Would it be a good thing if foxes were extinct in the UK?

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 13/05/2010 22:08

more times = times more

complimentary · 13/05/2010 22:11

It could think of plenty on MN who should be extinct, but not foxes.

30andMerkin · 13/05/2010 22:12

It's words like 'braying' and 'huge fuck off horses' that cloud this issue. Hunting is not a toff's sport, it's a country sport, the two aren't the same and because the pro-Hunt lobby so often tends to bank on the publicity of socialites etc that message has never got across.

Strangelybrown · 13/05/2010 22:12

No need to repeal it. fox hunting continues unharried by legal restrictions. silly law IMHO

Francagoestohollywood · 13/05/2010 22:13

To be honest I find hunting extremely uncivilized.
I suppose you can find other means of controlling fox population.

ravenAK · 13/05/2010 22:15

About 10x, I think.

We're about as likely to re-adopt cleaning chimneys by shoving small boys up them.

The public's solidly in favour of a ban. All talk of Cameron 'repealing' the law = 'Cameron allowing a free vote to silence the whingeing bloodthirsty throwbacks to his right'.

& now he has a very good excuse not to embarrass his party by doing so.

complimentary · 13/05/2010 22:15

To all of you who disagree with fox hunting, do you eat meat? cows, lambs, pigs, etc; all sent off wide eyed to a horrible death in an abbatoir, people don't seem to mind killing them, unless they have to do the killing.

abr1de · 13/05/2010 22:15

Hunting with dogs is the nearest to controlling them 'naturally' by wolves, which used to happen in Britain until we wiped out the wolf population. Hunting with dogs tends to kill old and ailing foxes, not younger, fitter ones.

And, contrary to popular belief, huntsmen generally have no wish to make foxes 'extinct'. There'd be no point to that at all.
If you want to stop cruelty to animals there are worthier targets than fox hunters.

I hope they repeal the act and spend some of the resources into tracking the cruel men who arrange dog baiting, where animals are penned with no escape and where there is no quick death from a bite to the spinal cord.

onagar · 13/05/2010 22:16

"killing for pleasure" is my objection. I eat meat so don't mind that animals get killed, but I don't want to share a country with people who get off on it.

I'm predicting the ban will be repealed though.

Francagoestohollywood · 13/05/2010 22:18

There are also many people who don't eat meat at all. Or who try to eat meat that doesn't come from intensive farming.
And do fox hunters actually eat the foxes they kill? I can't get the parallelism, to be honest.

ravenAK · 13/05/2010 22:19

As it happens I don't eat meat, complimentary, although I've no problem with it in theory.

Killing things for fun is a bit different.

sallyJayGorce · 13/05/2010 22:20

No-one has taken notice of the ban. Many hunts have grown in size. Thing is they don't have to publicise their meets now they are illegal so the antis don't turn up any more. Agree that hunting isn't a 'toff' past-time. I think there are more efficient ways of controlling vermin but the ban did Labout no favours with a rural population who felt they were dictated to by an urban-centric party.

I do hope it's not top of the agenda - surely there are many more urgent matters. It shouldn't have been for Labour either. They wasted huge amount of time on banning fox hunting while the economy etc burned.

Wonderstuff · 13/05/2010 22:21

Do you remember what a ridiculous amount of time it took to ban hunting? They MUST have better things to do than debate this again?

complimentary · 13/05/2010 22:22

onagar. " "I eat meat so don't mind that animals get killed" ok yeah, right. Must now go and eat meat and two veg, then demonstrate against those awful people still fox hunting.
