Whisper. What about repealing the Hunting Ban?

This has been on my mind since the election, so thought I would post, get flamed, and then name change . If the Conservatives had received a majority in the election, I understood they would repeal the hunting ban, or at least have a free vote. Now that they have teamed up with the Lib Dems, is there any chance? I know it is not the most important thing on anyone's agenda, but it is quite an important subject for a large part of the Conservative heartlands. Any takers? Off to put DD to bed. Back later.

Should introduce 'liberal, lefty hunting'.
Spare the foxes!

electra · 14/05/2010 14:02

What annoys me about fox hunting is people saying it's to control foxes when actually it's all about dressing up in pompous outfits and acting in the interests of 'tradition' specific to some.

If foxes need to be kept under control then why can it not be accomplished in a way more humane than chasing an animal until it's exhausted, tearing it apart or even digging it up when it has escaped to earth

Now I have certainly witnessed the damage foxes can do - my friend had 14 chickens that she had rescued and nurtured back to health, only for them all to be murdered by a fox who didn't even eat them There has to be a better way than this ridiculous and cruel pantomime that is a 'sport' though.

Chil1234 · 14/05/2010 14:32

The fox hunting ban is one of those laws that is 'more honoured in the breach than in the observance'.

ravenAK · 14/05/2010 15:36

That's where I came in I think complimentary - you can have hunting back so long as you chase Liberal voters.

You can have my dh for a start - give him 2 Red Bulls & a 10 minute start...

expatinscotland · 14/05/2010 15:46

a bunch of drunk fat losers riding around in goofy looking outfits chasing after a small creature they're not even going to eat and shouting ridiculous things like 'tally ho'.

let 'em at so the rest of the world can continue to laugh at them for the pack of giant eejits they are.

the big problem in the countryside, we live in a rural area, albeit in scotland, is second homeownership.

expatinscotland · 14/05/2010 16:03

As for hunting Liberals, it just goes to show up what idiocy people who need a horse and a bunch of dogs to chase down another dog (cuz that ain't hunting, folks) is.

It assumes all 'Liberals' are incapable of firing back .

Well, there's a laugh. This one grew up with a gun rack with her name on it, in flowery letters of course, in the window of the cab on Daddy's pick up (Happy Birthday! Now you're old enough to fire Daddy's 12-gauge!) and can drill a dime at 50 yards, so some drunk creep on horseback wearing a red jacket is gonna make my job a far sight easier.

Jus' sayin' .

GetOrfMoiLand · 14/05/2010 16:19

I really hope this doesn't rear its ugly head again. There are far more things to be considering.

I personally do not have strong views - I am not hugely for or against it. I think many people are hung up on the idea that hunting is a class issue (it is not; all classes hunt).

To be honest the hunting ban hasn't stopped hunting in a major way anyway - it still carries on.

So please o our sainted leaders do NOT waste hours and hours of parliamentary time on this issue. Sort some other shit out

Tangle · 14/05/2010 16:20

electra - if there's a better way, let people know! IIRC the Burns report did consider alternatives and found that, whilst hunting could be defined as cruel, so could all the legal alternatives (and the illegal ones, for that matter).

What is it people find more offensive? The act of the hunt, or the pageantry that has developed around it?

enabledebra · 14/05/2010 16:48

But this is 'new' politics where the politicians work for us?
Cameron well knows around 75% of voters support the ban so whether we are one of them or not isn't it vital that we can rely on our elected representatives to enact OUR collective decision about OUR laws? Or do you think they will continue to ignore us and do what they damn well please?

A repeal of the hunting ban would be like sticking two fingers up to each voter's face.
They know that too, so if it happens we will know we have been put well and truly back in our box until they need to get us out again to vote.

expatinscotland · 14/05/2010 17:24

'What is it people find more offensive? The act of the hunt, or the pageantry that has developed around it?'

I don't find it offensive. I find it a big, ugly joke. I mean, FFS. All that ridiculousness to chase down a dog. And you don't even eat it! That's so sissy it's dead funny to see grown men in get ups acting like goons over a few damn dogs.

'Ooo, they get my livestock.'

Ever heard of a fence, dumb ass? Or hell, you gotta gun, pick 'em off. They're not mountain lions or bears or even coyotes.

Chil1234 · 14/05/2010 17:30

There's no point repealing a law that isn't enforced. I expect they'll leave it alone, everyone will carry on hunting and the police/parliament will get on with more pressing matters.

expatinscotland · 14/05/2010 17:42

Yes.

Tally ho!

[Pull!]

mycounty · 14/05/2010 18:26

expatinscotland. Most people are capable of firing back............

expatinscotland · 14/05/2010 18:29

You see, mycountry (a most excellent namechange/troll, I must say ), I would never assume otherwise.

That's why, when I hunted, I pursued animals who couldn't hold guns.

There's enough to worry about from other hunters.

mycounty · 14/05/2010 19:08

expatinscotland. You hunted? How unfortunate for those poor animals. I suppose you had nothing else better to do.

expatinscotland · 14/05/2010 19:09

i did it for food.

expatinscotland · 14/05/2010 19:10

plenty of people still do. they live off their land. living seems a rather worthwhile thing to do to them.

what happened to your other little thread?

you were funnier then.

you appear to have suffered a sense of humour failure.

meh.

TTFN.

mycounty · 14/05/2010 19:13

expatinscotland. Why do you keep replying to yourself?

alicatte · 14/05/2010 20:09

How on earth are we still discussing HUNTING - liberals aren't that bad.

complimentary · 15/05/2010 20:24

ravenAK. I like the sound of your husband , seems he'd would be up for a laugh. If their was a hunt and the leaders of all parties were being hunted, who do you think would be caught first?

Coolfonz · 16/05/2010 08:33

where i live they hunt pigs, bloody trillions of them, they eat them, they dont wear stupid coats and they don't do it because - deep down - they want to exercise a kind of feudal authority over local land/people...

can't the farming community (aka tiny amount of huge landowners) just be grateful to be scrounging those enormous handouts they get from the urban population so they can deforest and poison our country while turning it into a second/third/fourth home theme park simultaneously?

Chil1234 · 16/05/2010 11:49

Of the two women I know that go hunting, one is a retired adminstrator and the other delivers the post for a living. I'm not sure where this fits with the feudal authority and enormous handouts you mention. (And they don't wear 'stupid coats' either, just regular riding gear.) Leaving foxes out of the picture - they hunt trails instead these days to stay within the law - it's tempting to think that the only people who engage in the activity are the upper-crust and wealthy landowners. But that would be like assuming the only people who enjoy watching football are the ones sipping champagne in the directors' boxes.
