Apparently Around one-sixth of Scottish voters support the Conservatives, but are rewarded not with 10 seats but with one

It seems they might do better in Scotland under PR.

From MN it does seem as though everyone hates the Tories in Scotland but I know from personal experience that's simply not the case. In rural areas they have support, but obviously not enough to unseat the LibDems et al.

Some Scots actually have very naturally 'traditional' conservative tendencies: frugal, hard-working, tough, self-reliant, etc. This was probably one reason why they did so well in the days of Empire: pretty well every railway in Canada or the Far East seems to have been the result of a clever Scottish engineer.

Of course these traits do not make Scots necessarily Conservative (with a capital C) and I don't mean this.

I'm in Scotland and do hate the Tories and frankly am disgusted that we've been foisted with a Tory Government that we as a country didn't vote for.

I've been on the fence re Independence but now think it has got to be the way to go.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 12/05/2010 20:05

Rossco I think you will find that a lot of English people would be happy to support Scottish independence too now. This election has really highlighted the polarity in political leaning.

RibenaBerry · 12/05/2010 20:09

No, you as a country didn't vote for the Tories, but the UK as a whole gave them the most votes.

To me, the whole Scottish situation is difficult. Scottish MPs get to vote on issues which will never affect their consituents, so they have no personal accountability, just party loyalty. Tuiton fees are one example of that, but it applies equally to any other devolved matter. That gets people in England's backs up as much as the fact that the Scottish feel that they didn't vote for the current government.

As others have said, the argument could just as easily be applied to other pockets of the UK. I don't think that London (where I am) for example, is particularly chuffed. The argument that 'well, you are all England' isn't really any more weighty than 'well you are all UK'. Unless you are using it as an argument for independence. And quite honestly I would support Scotland having a referendum on that point. If they want to leave, they should be allowed. It's not a prison. If they want to stay then, like London or the north, they have to put up with the government we get across the whole country.

FiveOrangePips · 12/05/2010 21:58

The Tories opposed PR in Scotland, but they wouldn't have got any seats in the Scottish parliament if there hadn't been PR.

5/6 ths didn't vote Tory seems to say quite a lot to me.

gaelicsheep · 12/05/2010 22:00

I got roundly told off the other day for generalising about the Scots. And yet here, yet again, are Scots who want to generalise about their anti-Tory leanings. I'm Scottish and I hate the Tories, etc.

16.7% of Scots voted for the Tories. 18.9%, including my own constituency, voted for the Lib Dems. About a fifth voted SNP. The only reason the rest of Scotland went Labour is because it's made up of a largely urban population, same as much of northern England. The Labour-voting Scots need to get a grip basically and stop whinging.

seb1 · 12/05/2010 22:04

16.7% of people living in Scotland may have voted Tory not 16.7% of Scots.

You see, you do all want to generalise about yourselves! I knew it.

MmeTrueBlueberry · 12/05/2010 22:36

I am Scottish and voted conservative.

seb1 · 12/05/2010 22:47

Not everyone who lives in Scotland is Scottish

gaelicsheep · 12/05/2010 22:51

That's totally irrelevant. If you live in Scotland you vote in Scotland and have influence over the result (although if you're outside the central belt sadly not enough). Not all people in England are English either - there are even some Scots there believe it or not!

RibenaBerry - I think most people in Scotland would be quite happy if Scottish MPs were excluded from votes that only involve England.

IIRR SNP MPs don't vote in those situations either.

SomeGuy · 13/05/2010 01:03

ah, nice to see the BNP have supporters in Scotland.

RibenaBerry · 13/05/2010 07:28

I'm not sure if SNP MPs do, but Labour MPs certainly have. There's unfairnesses all round in the current situation with Scotland.

ABatInBunkFive · 13/05/2010 09:50

Someguy?!?

SomeGuy · 13/05/2010 11:08

I was alluding to seb's arguments, much loved of the BNP.

ABatInBunkFive · 13/05/2010 11:20

Oh ok, i thought you'd miss read my SNP for BNP i was having palpitations.

seb1 · 13/05/2010 11:53

No Someguy, you missed the main (statistical) point of what I was saying, a assumption has been made regarding "The Scots". Not everyone who lives in Scotland is Scottish not everyone in England is English, not everyone in Wales is Welsh. 16.7% of voters in Scotland voted Tory not 16.7% of Scots, the results show what people currently living in Scotland voted not Scots.

backtotalkaboutthis · 13/05/2010 13:21

Gosh I'd love the Scots to get independence. Frightfully prejudiced against England and the English. Ghastly. I would love to fulfil their hearts' desire.

ABatInBunkFive · 13/05/2010 13:25

backtotalk, you are funny.
