A country where people don't ask what am I entitled to but rather.....

What are my responsibilities....

Cracking line, hope they are going to crack down on the "entitled" culture, it is all over this board like a rash at the best of times.

We'll see how it is when the government says 'I'm sorry we can't afford to collect your rubbish, it's no longer an entitlement. I know, how about when you get home from work, have fed and put the kids to bed why do you all have a little meeting and sort it out between yourselves?'

toccatanfudge · 11/05/2010 22:35

that was the line that worried me the most.

The frail (presume he meant those with disabilities) , the elderly, they'll look after them, and they're give tax incentives to couples.......

NormaSnorks · 11/05/2010 22:38

Excellent line... Really hope he manages to make it happen.

The sooner people realise that their mere existence doesn't entitle them to anything, the better IMHO.....

toccatanfudge · 11/05/2010 22:39

excellent line if you're not one of the underdogs that the Tories don't believe warrant any support as we're not supporting proper family values.

ASecretLemonadeDrinkerDAVE · 11/05/2010 22:41

I loved that part of his speech, he said a few more things after and for the life of me I cannot remember what they were....

ASecretLemonadeDrinkerDAVE · 11/05/2010 22:43

And I want to help try and build a more responsible society here in Britain, one where we don't just ask what are my entitlements, but what are my responsibilities. When we don't ask where what am I just owed, but more what can I give. And a guide for that society that those who can should and those who can't we will always help.

RustyBucket · 11/05/2010 22:43

But there are so many people in this country who demand to be entitled.

It is a lazy and parasitic culture and it needs to be reversed.

toccata - the married tax thing is shelved for now, as is the inheritance tax.

The priority is going to be raising the tax threshold to £10k, which can only be a good thing.

ASecretLemonadeDrinkerDAVE · 11/05/2010 22:44

from here

barleywood · 11/05/2010 22:44

Putting on my hard helmet and watching with interest.

I clocked that line by DC and thought mmmn, or did I mean MN

edam · 11/05/2010 22:44

It's a poor imitation of JFK's 'Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country'. Second hand goods like most of Cameron's thoughts. (And it's older than Cameron, too.)

Reminds me of that brilliant put down by the US politician who said of an opponent something like: 'Sir, I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. You are no Jack Kennedy!'

Cameron's certainly no Jack Kennedy...

edam · 11/05/2010 22:46

(Mind you, lack of resemblance to JFK is probably a good thing if you are looking at it from Samantha Cameron's point of view. )

SpringHeeledJack · 11/05/2010 22:47

I love being lectured on entitlement by someone who stands to inherit fuckloads

toccatanfudge · 11/05/2010 22:47

shelved "for now"

raising the tax threshold isn't going to do unemployed people any good.

Why aren't they targeting criminals?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/05/2010 22:47

Rusty - I completely agree. Very keen to see the current culture turned around but I'm pleased he emphasised that the vunerable, disabled, elderly etc need to be looked after.

Toccata - to my mind you fall under the vunerable bracket. Would be extremely surprised and v.shocked if any measures affected you personally.

RustyBucket · 11/05/2010 22:48

Second hand or not, this country has been bled dry by the "entitled" and we the ordinary hard working people have paid for it.

OP posts:
BigGitDad · 11/05/2010 22:49

Actually I thought it was the best speech I had heard him give. Lets hope he lives up to it, we'll see...

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/05/2010 22:49

No, it won't help the unemployed, but it will help with getting back into work surely?

toccatanfudge · 11/05/2010 22:50

I'm not frail, I'm not elderly, I'm not part of the "proper family values" which the Tories have bleated on about so much in the past.

I'm worried I won't lie, I have a slightly sick feeling in my stomach tonight (that could of course be down to not having eaten much today ) at the though of the future for me and my DS's.

Quattrocento · 11/05/2010 22:50

killed the quayle campaign

Quayle: Three times that I've had this question ? and I will try to answer it again for you, as clearly as I can, because the question you're asking is, "What kind of qualifications does Dan Quayle have to be president," "What kind of qualifications do I have," and "What would I do in this kind of a situation?" And what would I do in this situation? [...] I have far more experience than many others that sought the office of vice president of this country. I have as much experience in the Congress as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency. I will be prepared to deal with the people in the Bush administration, if that unfortunate event would ever occur.
Judy Woodruff: Senator [Bentsen]?
Bentsen: Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy. (Prolonged shouts and applause.) What has to be done in a situation like that is to call in the ?

toccatanfudge · 11/05/2010 22:51

and where are they going to magic up the jobs from, the affordable childcare (and childcare that extends beyond 7am-6pm) for those that need it, the affordable housing for those that will lose the help with that once they're back in work? Those things cost money - so they won't I'm sure do anything about it I'm sure

headlessandclueless · 11/05/2010 22:52

springheeled jack, inheriting from your parents is one thing. thinking youa re entitled to a living from the state is another.

yes, it is a copy of jfk, but so what? civilisation has existed for long enought that no one though is ever going to be original. if he can quote greek scholars, and people form five hundred years ago, or even gandhi, then why not jfk?

ASecretLemonadeDrinkerDAVE · 11/05/2010 22:52

I don't read that as benefit claimants, surely criminals have a sense of entitlement too - they obviously feel entitled to commit those crimes and need cracking down on. If I were on benefits I would be as annoyed as people who aren't about the amount of people who claim them 'wrongly' ie. my sister in law who has 2 school aged children and is choosing not to work, and her husband is in full time employment but they say they live apart and are seperated. No one can say that is right.

edam · 11/05/2010 22:52

Rusty, I'll think you'll find it was the idiot fat cats in the City who brought the economy to its knees. Not people on benefits, if that's what you mean by 'entitled'.

An awful lot of people who have been used to judging those on benefits will be finding out exactly what it's like to be poor now the Tories are back in, Osborne minor is Chancellor and they will cut public spending - hence jobs - immediately.

expatinscotland · 11/05/2010 22:52

Oh, god, Quattro!

Spews tea at screen.

Danforth 'potatoe' Quayle.
