What are my responsibilities....

Cracking line, hope they are going to crack down on the "entitled" culture, it is all over this board like a rash at the best of times.

OP posts:
toccatanfudge · 12/05/2010 09:10

well £30 a week is more than months wages in Zimbabwe......

but what does £30 a week here get you?

I'm not suprised many asylum seekers that have been waiting years for a decision decide to work cash in hand - there's not much to "work with" in regards to the asylum seekers benefits.

And expat - you know those ones that get dumped in the shitty places in Glasgow.........they're the lucky ones - many more don't qualify for housing as if it's proved that they know even one person in the UK that has their own home (either rented on owned) they're usually deemed to have somewhere to stay............that's if they're not chucked into a detention centre

BeenBeta · 12/05/2010 09:10

Well I am happy about the £10k tax allowance. It makes lot of economic sense as it encourages people to work. Coming off benefits is worthwhile.

I also hear they are going to raise the capital gains tax rate from 18% back up to 40%. Not many poor people pay capital gains tax but a lot of rich people do. Tax on second homes is also good. Property is massively under taxed and has distorted our economy.

I was astonished when Labour redued the CGT rate to 18% but imposed a 10p tax rate on the poor and did not tax second homes.

ooojimaflip · 12/05/2010 09:11

Acknowledging that those whose life style you disagree with are people is not 'fluffy' - it's a minimum requirement for civilization.

ooojimaflip · 12/05/2010 09:13

I am not convinced of the virtues of raising the CGT rate. It is saying that we would rather people by employees than create new businesses.

As it happens, I'm quite happy being an employee, but I need someone to employ me.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 12/05/2010 09:25

Just to clarify mistletoekisses' post - you can't claim asylum from India any more, it's been on the "white list" for about a decade...

Sorry I simply do not do fluffy, it's much better to dehumanize in my field of work, nothing personal."

Are you David Cameron?

Arf.

The irony of David Cameron talking about the poorest people in our society having "entitlement issues" is utterly delicious.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 12/05/2010 09:31

Riven - AFAIK it's if you buy an asset (eg shares) that goes up in value, then you sell it, you pay CGT on your profit. You have a certain allowance per year.

Coolfonz · 12/05/2010 09:31

"it's much better to dehumanize"

you need a long lie down in a dark room and a pint of prozac.

it's dehumanise by the way. hmm...

expatinscotland · 12/05/2010 09:32

UCM, is that you?

ooojimaflip · 12/05/2010 09:32

Riven it's tax on the profit you made for selling a capital asset - so the profit on selling a second home, or shares in a business - things like that.

electra · 12/05/2010 09:35

'Sorry I simply do not do fluffy, it's much better to dehumanize in my field of work, nothing personal."'

'Are you David Cameron?'

No, probably Margaret Thatcher!

when the person is an alien???

Ninjacat · 12/05/2010 13:28

So is the Class War back on?

SexyDomesticatedDad · 12/05/2010 13:40

One point on asylum seekers that does get me - aren't you supposed to claim assylum in the first country that you travel to? If this is not the case then they are choosing to try to come to Britain which seems a 'better' place. I have no issues with legel migrants from EU coming over and 'taking our jobbs' - IMHO the UK workers have often not bothered and gave the jobs away or just aren't prepared to put the effort in.

Ninjacat · 12/05/2010 13:45

Coolfonz indeed the tail is now wagging the dog.

Glad the Banks were "entitled" to our support though. I hate to think of the poor diddums Bwankers going hungry

BeenBeta · 12/05/2010 14:03

I do not think any of the banks should have been bailed out (other than to protect depositors). I also think that people that can work and can be found a job should have to take that job and get to keep all or nearly all the money they earn up to £10k.

That seems fair to me. I am pretty sure that is what Cameron is saying he wants. I do not think it is Class War or fascist to say that.

toccatanfudge · 12/05/2010 14:06

SDD - the vast majority do simply cross the borders into the closest "safe" country - hence the reason that we only have a tiny fraction of the worlds refugees living here

FairyMum · 12/05/2010 14:06

And what would have happened had the banks not been bailed out and to all the people working for these banks?

Penthesileia · 12/05/2010 14:07

I wonder if David Cameron (and his fellow MPs of all colours...) decided not to claim what he was "entitled" to as an MP?

Oh, wait... Did David claim money he was "entitled" to pay mortgage interest on his second home, for example?

Hmmm. I rather think he did. Even The Daily Mail wouldn't deny it.

I'm sure he, as a the wife of a millionaire heiress, and minor nobility himself, was obviously short of a few bob.

POT.

FUCKING.

KETTLE.

BLACK.

As someone has already said, DC is precisely not the kind of person who can lecture us about entitlement.

OP: maybe you better think about that a bit before spouting your hate-filled bile about single mothers.

toccatanfudge · 12/05/2010 14:10

you see BB - it's not as simple as that -

  1. How many businesses do you think want "reluctant" employees on their books? Their business will suffer as a result
  1. "Being able to work" doesn't mean that a) you can do the hours of the job available (especially if you have children and need childcare) or that b) the job that you "make" people take won't leave them up shit creek finanically
Penthesileia · 12/05/2010 14:10

In fact, the more I think about it, the more I am ASTONISHED at his hypocrisy in even mentioning entitlement in his first speech as PM.

Chilling.

Penthesileia · 12/05/2010 14:11

husband, not wife, obviously.
