thetoriesaretoast · 13/05/2010 09:18

LOL, BIWI. Also like no.4 'Only one of them is George Osborne.'

Although come to think of it that's still one too many.

Bucharest · 13/05/2010 09:21

Morning lefties.
Am feeling more cheery and less teary today....(particularly as thread has become more feisty again and less conciliatory )

onebat agree entirely about liberty-schmiberty. Scrapping the idea of ID cards was on the books anyway, all I reckon the Conservatives will do is make Britain like most other countries in Europe so it becomes a legal requirement to carry something else round with you- (dp still mortified about time he took me for sleazy weekend to hotel 50 miles away and they wouldn't let us stay because I didn't have my passport- and there's me screeching "fvck me I know you're provincial and parochial here but I didn't notice we'd crossed any bloody borders")
Anyway- I'm still of the belief (rose-tinted though it may be) that making me carry a card, and them knowing that my blood group is rhesus neg and I vote Labour actually isn't taking any of my liberties away from me, and when my elderly mother goes to the theatre at night with her elderly friends I'm quite happy there's cctv on every corner and on the bus she takes home.

How many children are finger-printed anyway? Dd would love it.

at LOAJetplane sending in the parental permission....

Bloodyfvck at schools' man......that sounds progressive and positive

ToriesareToast- Place of Greater Safety is good isn't it? There's another really good one about the private lives of Danton and co called Danton's Death (in English, I had to do it for A level German)

MmeLindt- hope dd is OK, mine had ScarletF last year, thing to look out for is slimy thick white coating on tongue, (i tried to scrape it off dd convinced it was bad oral hygiene like N C**has) (I made that up btw)

Wubbly- hope your treatment goes well.

Off to read 101 things list

thetoriesaretoast · 13/05/2010 09:29

Hi Bucharest, glad you're feeling cheery. I reckon I'm working my way through the four stages of grief but have only covered denial, anger and depression so far (acceptance seems a long way off).

Thanks for the book recommendation. I had a real crush on Danton when I did A level History.

Nymphadora · 13/05/2010 09:37

Read Goves thing about back to basics to DH (headteacher) and he groaned , then I added the rest!

DH hasn't liked Labour from an education POV as there has been too many initiatives and not enough follow through but Goves views are v concerning.

Mmelindt- hope dd is ok

Wubbly - hope the treatment goes well. Is the foot massage to help the treatment or is it a therapeutic thing?

MmeLindt · 13/05/2010 10:15

Morning all. Thanks for asking about DD. Seems to be a false alarm, no rash today, no fever. Still tired, in fact went back to bed at 8am after getting up at 6:30am. Hmmmm. One thing I hate about being a parent. Guessing what is wrong.

Off to pick up my parents from the airport.

Wubbly
hope you are feeling ok today.

thetoriesaretoast · 13/05/2010 10:25

Hope the phaeton gets to the airport in time, MmeL.

volatilemeerkats · 13/05/2010 10:27

Just leaving my spoor for later

Shocked by the five year term. Isn't that rather a long one? Seems to detract from the spirit of democracy to limit the voters to having their say only twice in a decade.

onebatmother · 13/05/2010 10:29

at spoor. That's made me feel a bit queasy. Not as queasy as 55% though.

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/05/2010 10:30

Good morning everyone.

MMeLindt - I hope your dd is OK, scarlet fever sounds so scary, like a Victorian illness. DD had it a couple of years ago bless her, she was not hugely ill but she did feel very sorry for herself.

Very interesting re AC diaries in full.

I didn't see the conference yesterday, but saw snippets of it on the news. I was sat there yelling at the telly 'this is not fucking x factor results show, stop standing there joshing at each other.' It is just a bloody huge joke.

I feel less depressed now and more angry.

I did laugh though at the photo of the security council. Bloke sat next to Nick Clegg seemed to have a 'who the bloody hell is this muppet' look on his face.

It's all The Straight's son's fault

I have also just found out I have to go to China in August (for work). I hate work trips.

DavidHameron · 13/05/2010 10:50

Still catching up with thread: bloody hell I get out of the office for a day and I miss everything. Will be back on to read and rant tonight. But can I just say in meantime: slightly cheered to see universities moved OUT of BIS and back into Education (wtf were the Labour Party thinking there: nutters) but slightly doomed to see Gove heading it up, alongside the 6 billion cuts...

DavidHameron · 13/05/2010 10:51

55% rule is a fucking shocker: I do hope this is thrown out. Meddling with non-constitution really not on.

ilovemydogandMrBrown · 13/05/2010 10:54

Is it my imagination, or has there been a bombardment of Tory threads? Have they always been around, but in the closet?

BecauseImWorthIt · 13/05/2010 11:03

Oooh GOML - can I come with you so I can practise my Mandarin?!

BecauseImWorthIt · 13/05/2010 11:03
Quattrocento · 13/05/2010 11:17

Getorf - I sympathise with hatred of work trips - do far too many of them myself and totally understand how they disrupt everything. Don't know if you've been to China before, so s'cuse me if you have and hate it, but I adore trips to China. Really gobsmacking amazing amazing place.

taffetacat · 13/05/2010 11:32

sore head too much wine book discussion last night

wubbly - hope the rest of the treatment goes well for you
Mme L - glad to hear your DD has perked up a bit, maybe fighting it off?

I am blubbing into the pages of the Grauniad again. A gorgeous centrefold of GBs last hours and those ridiculous jokers on the front page. What a dumbed down society we have become.

Ties for schoolchildren - what a complete arse

thetoriesaretoast · 13/05/2010 11:37

Yes, I found the Guardian spreads really affecting. And he left notes for DC! Wonder if he left prawns in the curtain poles as well.

Ninjacat · 13/05/2010 11:39

So the Tories need a 326 seats for a majority. Good job they just put 20 lib dems on the government payroll then. Grrr

What's that quote about any party with the word democratic in it isn't? Wish I'd remembered that before I voted.

thetoriesaretoast · 13/05/2010 11:42

The ridiculous thing is, the LibDems seem to have settled for relatively little. None of the big govt posts are theirs and I really thought they'd hold out for more than AV. The Guardian feature implies Clegg was asking GB to hold on before resigning so he could turn the screws a bit more on the Tories.

Perhaps they could create jobs in the job centres to deal with the rising numbers of unemployed?

SpringHeeledJack · 13/05/2010 12:01

Place of Greater Safety is great. I re-read it recently but couldn't do the last few chapters again.

...could someone tell me what the Guardian's editorial line is now? have they eaten humble pie?- have read it all my adult life but had to throw in the towel before the election. rrrrrrrr.

Lol Ninjacat.

Tbh I thought NC had very little gravtas before the election. Since then he just seems even more of a hopeless puppet.

Quattro - no,m I have never been to China so I know I am being churlish about going, I am lucky to get the chance to go really. I am going to Beijing and some place I have never heard of called Chongching. I have looked it up and it is a city of 5 million. And I have never heard of it!

I am just being grumpy because I loathe long flights and it's going to be blardy hot there in August I think.

BIWI - you speak Mandarin, blimey. That must be so difficult to learn.

SpringHeeledJack · 13/05/2010 12:09

Prolesworth haven't they done it yet???

I'm sure it must've lost them more readers than it gained. Bragg has more or less said he called it wrong- surely they can?
