my anecdotal experience of surestart is that the mums there were all MC like me and there wasn't a teenage/working class mum in sight.

surestart roehampton had over £800K a year to spend, and from what i could see it was entirely wasted (i made friends with one of the playworkers who was so frustrated by this, she'd offer a creche for eg at asda and there would be no uptake, or baby massage, ditto).

ime surestart didn't get to those that it needed to get to at all, but rather affluend mummies who could have paid for the services offered elsewhere.

this may be entirely unique to my area of course.

Heathcliffscathy · 12/05/2010 08:50

am i alone is much preferring Ed (or rather ambassador from planet fuck) to david?

policywonk · 12/05/2010 08:53

'I'm wondering who they will make the minister for women and equality.' - suspect this portfolio will be dropped

I think most of us prefer EM, soph. I do anyway.

Heathcliffscathy · 12/05/2010 08:55

why isn't he running?

ambassador from planet fuck for president!

Heathcliffscathy · 12/05/2010 08:55

another good thing...won't it be fabulous to have a proper opposition again rather than relying on private eye?

shame that women are so absent from both labour leadership candidacy and - it appears - the incoming cabinet.

Soph, I think he is thinking about running.

News now saying Huhne will have Energy and Climate Change - shame, would have been good to have a proper lefty liberal at the Home Office.

Apparently NI rise scrapped for employers but not for employees. Policies don't get much more Tory than that...

I'm starting a campaign for Tony Benn for Labour leader.

cats chance in hell, but hey, I have more time on my hands now this pesky election thing has been resolved.

policywonk · 12/05/2010 09:16

Ah right, good to get some insider info. Hope it is useful.

Anna Pasternak (didn't she write that appalling book about Diana?) just on the radio saying that Cameron is essentially classless. Eh, what?

Poledra · 12/05/2010 09:18

Crap crap crap - cannot believe George Osborne will be chancellor.

Sorry, have been lurking on this thread without posting but DH is away and I have nobody to rant to....

god, it's just a sea of white, middle class (or more), male faces isn't it?

Hassled · 12/05/2010 09:22

Good luck today, Justa.

Tell me about Ed Balls - why is he so disliked?

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/05/2010 09:23

Morning everyone.

I am very sorry if I pissed people off last night (sophable and MrJustAbout) saying that LibDems are closet tories. I didn't actually mean that the way it came out. I just don;t trust Clegg as far as I can throw him, and I was pissed off, and tired and emotional (aka 2 glasses of wine on an empty stomach and 2 cigarettes when I gave up 2 years ago). But sincere apologies for upsetting people.

I had a dream last night where I found loads of ballot boxes at work, full of thousand of labour votes. It was all a sting operation cooked up by Cons central office and News International. There was a huge outcry, labour got back into government (howveer Brown backed out graciously) and we ended up with Yvette Cooper as PM. Rupert Murdoch was imprisoned.

Was rather upset to wake up this morning and discover that it wasn't true!

policywonk · 12/05/2010 09:24

Hi poledra

Yes Len, that's my problem with him too. Sold his soul in the most abject way. LibDems had a manifesto commitment to a public inquiry into the torture stuff - will be interesting to see whether this is included in this policy statement that's coming out today (anyone know what time?)

I like the sound of yr dream GetOrf, esp. the last bit.

Yes, why to ppl hate Balls so much? I accept that they do, but not really sure why. I mate of mine can't stand him and has been tweeting that she'll leave the country if he becomes leader, and I'm pretty sure she's not a Tory. I'll have to ask her if I ever leave the house again. I know he's supposed to be a bully - but it's not as though the public see that side of him.

If things go well Len, I think a coalition that governs without falling apart in the short term might provide a good headwind for further electoral reform.

I do agree that the pitiful white male line-up is extremely bad news. I hope they realise this and are going to do something about it.
