Onebat - I've heard lefties argue for Surestart to be directed at those most in need, and withheld from "middle class mummies". And I have felt it to be a mistake for the reasons you outline. Hey ho. It isn't just an argument of the right. Sadly.

Beachcomber · 12/05/2010 07:26

Morning all - how are we today?

I'm feeling quite chipper thanks to having limited myself to one large whiskey last night. Plus feeling that under the circs the result is not so very bad. Let's all be nice to each other this morning.

Am also looking forward to the idea that Gordon is gooing to go into charity/good deeds which is fab and will leave all those who were whipped up by the press to believe he was power crazed looking like arses.

Am also feeling gracious this morning - good luck Tories, please try to think about the serfs. LibDems - good luck with the difficult task ahead and may you have made the right choice.

Labour - Harriet keep them in line and don't let them start fighting, wish you would run but we all know why you won't.

Nymphadora · 12/05/2010 07:39

Will catch up later but just seen this on the private educatio/mp thread.

" I knew Labour weren't well educated look at the mess they made of the country" ( not exact quote btw I couldn't remember it all)

Lots of people saying you only get a good education privately.

I will get back under my blanket in the corner of this thread now.

BeenBeta · 12/05/2010 07:41

Morning all.

Feeling fairly happy. Lots of negative thoughts from Tories about how 'this will never work' and horor that 'the Lib Dems caved in' from those on the left.

I guess that means no one got everything they wanted. The policies I have heard do sound good though. Things like Surestart focussed on the poorest, pretty much a zero tax rate for people on minimum wage, Trident stays for now. Cutting the deficit.

It could be worse. I guess we just suck it and see.

Avocadoes · 12/05/2010 07:47

Ghetto-ising SureStart will undermine it totally. I am shocked a Leftie thread supports such a proposition. I am very upset that is the future.

Still no women announced for the new Cabinet. I wonder if there will be machinery of government changes and they will cut the number of Depts to save money? Probably not as that wld mean a smaller Cabinet which won't work with both Parties vying for Cabinet positions.

Beachcomber · 12/05/2010 07:58

I agree that SureStart is at risk of being undermined by making it ghettoised - it was always supposed to be about offering the same opportunities to all children.

With this 10K tax thing - does that apply to everybody or just those on low incomes?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/05/2010 07:59

good morning - wish I'd seen this thread yesterday am pretty chipper too. Lib Dems may finaly have a chance to make some difference.

back later - first day back at (voluntary) work since Easter.

MmeLindt · 12/05/2010 08:06

Disappointed that there are no women in the cabinet (as yet) which puts us, in comparison to other European countries pretty much bottom of the league table.

Sounds like making SureStart available only for the neediest means slashing their budget. Do not not agree with that and anyone who does should think long and hard about it. The support of SureStart could mean that a mum (even a middleclass mum) gets the support she needs to stay on her feet. I had similar support when recovering from a CS and it was partly that that averted a slide into PND.

Off out today to a photo club meeting.

MrJustAbout · 12/05/2010 08:06

If you want sure start to increased the life chances of the worst off relative to the rest, it has to go to the worst off.

Do you want the gap between rich and poor to continue growing?

taffetacat · 12/05/2010 08:07

Sneaky tears keep escaping

Off for a bit I think. Do some gardening. Try to forget about it all. Head in sand.

TheStraitsofWTF · 12/05/2010 08:07

woke up v fed up, having dreamed that ds had voted tory, and somehow it was all his fault.

He's 7 months old.

Beachcomber · 12/05/2010 08:13

But if you make SureStart about the poor it will become marginalised (and possibly not used by those who need it the most) the idea as I heard GB speak once about it was that all children deserve the same. It was all about not treating rich and poor as different for once.

I understand that money has to be saved - surely there are other areas?

policywonk · 12/05/2010 08:17

Hello Kitten, saw you posting y'day and thought you should be over here

Tentative 'hello, how are we feeling?' to the rest of yez. I blame Straits's DS.

Johnson just on Today ruling himself out of leadership and saying he'll support D Mil.

onebatmother · 12/05/2010 08:21

One of the principles of Surestart was this 'access to all' idea, which didn't differentiate (at least on the most basic level) between children. Yes, this cost more, but it was thought to be a price worth paying because this strategy did reach those families who had not previously been reachable. It enabled, rather than instructed.

If you change that it will be something else entirely, and I suspect that something will be - or certainly, will be perceived to be, a mixture of free school meals and social services.

Morning Pol. Not feeling dramatically more optimistic, I must confess. But onwards and upwards and all that. I'm sure I will learn to stop worrying and love the Tories.

We are laughing here at an ad for a quiz night at the local spiritualist church, in which the congregation would appear to be at a considerable advantage.

Morning. Cannot believe the country goes and enters a parallel universe while I am at a softplay party and dp thinks to mention "oh, by the way..." just as I am going to bed, causing me another bloody sleepless night.

Off to catch up and update my FB status to mention something cryptic about Faust selling his soul and it never working out.

policywonk · 12/05/2010 08:29

Morning OBM. DS1 sitting here asking after your DS and wantint to know when he's going to see him.

BecauseImWorthIt · 12/05/2010 08:34

Morning.

So it wasn't all a dream?

The thing that irks me the most, today anyway, is that Georgie Boy is chancellor. I had really hoped that would go to someone older better wiser else.

Hassled · 12/05/2010 08:37

Seeing Hague just arrive at Downing Street has only served to remind me about the morning after the night before May 97.

Johnson was very gracious, I thought - a shame really that he won't be going for the leadership.

onebatmother · 12/05/2010 08:37

Oh how lovely - haven't done that for aaages. It's spring now tho, warm enough for the South Bank.

Hassled · 12/05/2010 08:44

And to add to my woes my horrible cold did not miraculously disappear overnight as I'd been assuming. Tomorrow I have to go to a conference on "Sorting A School Budget When You Have No Money Whatsoever", or words to that effect. Bah. If we were being shafted before, we really are going to be stuffed now.
