Californication? What's that about?

Cut taxes, carry on spending, go so bankrupt we can't afford basic classroom supplies? Only without the sunshine?

MmeLindt · 11/05/2010 17:24

Thanks Apuski. Love the WWMD question.

policywonk · 11/05/2010 17:27

TYV - yes, I think that sums up California!

theyoungvisiter · 11/05/2010 17:28

so is that the secret tory plan for our future? [mind boggles]

Penthesileia · 11/05/2010 17:29

I imagine Maggie would beat them all into shape with her handbag. If anything, she was 'ard. These mummy's boys have nothing on her.

thetoriesaretoast · 11/05/2010 17:30

'the choreography and the dignity of the Constitution' (BBC) - oh FFS.

Penthesileia · 11/05/2010 17:33

at choreography.

William Hague talked about "elected PM": Uh-uhhhhhhhh

Anyone wondering if Hague is going to move back up in the power stakes?

onebatmother · 11/05/2010 17:36

Nick Robinson quite interesting just now on LibCon coalition being an excellent opportunity for Tories to quietly drop things they don't like (he mentioned Inheritance Tax)and blame the LDs when the Mail kicks up a fuss. Perhaps also pick up some slightly more progressive ones that DC wouldn't have got past the membership but which can now be blamed on the LDs.

onebatmother · 11/05/2010 17:38

I'm slightly scared that - with the above in mind - it won't go as wrong for the T's as we lefties might be hoping.

jennylindinha · 11/05/2010 17:40

Right, am about to go home. I am so tempted to cycle down to Downing street and rant in the street, but DD is calling...

See you all later, I will have Radio 4 on my phone on the way so I don't miss anything!

policywonk · 11/05/2010 17:45

OBM - but worse things could happen than the Tories having to drop some of the more egregious parts of their programme.

Who here, if they'd been offered a minority Tory gvt w/ a LD presence three months ago, would have bitten your hand off? Me, for one.

Hassled · 11/05/2010 17:46

Hague's an odd one - I used to loathe him. Then he fell out of favour and seemed quite human and I secretly quite liked him. Now he's back in the frontline and I'm starting to loathe him all over again. Power corrupts, or something.

i dont see how AV will make any difference to anything?

what's the point?

apologies if missing nuances or something. I just don;t see the point in spending all that money and changing all the rules to end up back where we started.

ImSoNotTelling · 11/05/2010 17:55

or just that people are hoping that LD people will put labour second and vice versa and lock the tories out?

when we're looking at so many seats beign stalwart one way or the other, i don't see that it will mean much?

and my green vote will still be a total waste of time.

ImSoNotTelling · 11/05/2010 17:58

God i hate william hague's voice

I think Hauge is way more bearable when he has a dose of humility thrown in Hassled. Brings out a bit of humour. He's rapidly losing ground with me again now too.

ImSoNotTelling · 11/05/2010 18:03

as a lefty who has voted lib dem in the past i just can't see lib/con being a natural or comfortable alliance

people keep saying that there are tory/right wing types voting lib dem but i feel a bit about that if I'm honest

lib dems need to hold out for something concrete on the voting reform. my dad says that once one change has happened it will pave the way for others. but I think that maybe if we do a change now to AV everyone will think "well we've done voting change that's that" and lose appetite for further reform.

all these things cost a huge amount of money too. referendums, changing how the voting works, advertising it all, general elections. I mean we can't go on like this indefinitely. people get bored too.

thetoriesaretoast · 11/05/2010 18:05

Thought of Tory leader bending over backwards for Clegg quite nauseating...

onebatmother · 11/05/2010 18:07

I'm not sure Pol. I don't think the worst of the slashing and burning will be affected - LDs and Tories not that far apart on that issue. Immigration possibly - amnesty, followed by big cut in numbers? Inheritance tax probably doesn't impact enormously on the public purse at the end of the day..

I think I'd rather have the public see them for what they are and then vote them out, than a drip-drip over a longer period of time.

MarionCole · 11/05/2010 18:09

Now that's an interesting point.

I wonder how many LibDem MPs will defect if there is an alliance? Suddenly their working majority could become very unstable.

LadyBlaBlah · 11/05/2010 18:13

I never get this "they are nearly in agreement"

How can this be possible? Is it not that you are either in agreement or not in agreement - can you be nearly in agreement? Because nearly is not agreement.

Just a thought. and evilily thinking they might not give the media their story

Nymphadora · 11/05/2010 18:14

Scotland not happy about Tories
