they might hold enough cards to form a government, but if they found themselves in government, I think they'd feel they don't hold the cards at all - there is a larger, broadly left opposition which would hold them back from doing anything

I wouldn't actually be that unhappy with a lib-tory coalition.

The policies that I most disagree with from the Tories would undoubtedly be chucked out by the lib dems. I'd rather see a Lib-lab coalition but anything is better than Tory majority.

But with the Tories still refusing electoral reform, I can't see how the lib dems could support them.

It's the Lib dem's golden opportunity for some form of PR/AV and their MPs would never allow them to throw that chance away - surely?

sophable I disagree - the one party campaigning hard on electoral reform saw just about no positive swing towards it.
I am a bit less depressed than when I went to bed, when I thought it would be a majority Tory govnt.
But I am not a Brown fan and I think it would be a huge mistake for him to hang on. The Labour party has got itself in a complete mess by not allowing any opposition to Brown.

wmmc I feel a bit like that too. Although I did indeed wuss out and vote for the usual. My reasons were: 1) didn't want Labour meltdown; 2) didn't trust Clegg not to sell out to Tories and sell out on PR (as he was indicating last week); 3) don't really believe the LD policies are as sound as I would like - not convinced on child poverty, they clearly don't take equal opps seriously (not many blacks or women); and basically Clegg is a public school boy and has no more real understanding of the issues facing the de-industrualised north than Cameron.

I'm thinking perhaps the lib dem vote has been affected by tactical voting against labour/tories?

I'm not sure the voters are rejecting the lib dems policies outright just desperately trying to avoid a government they don't want?
