You don't need your polling card to vote - if you don't have it, just turn up at the polling station and tell them your name and address. You don't need ID unless you're in Northern Ireland.

More details here:
www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/general_election_faq.aspx

If you don't know where your polling station is, check your local council's website or give them a call.

Let's try and keep this near the top so noone misses out on voting

You can go in your pyjamas - polling stations are not Tesco

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/05/2010 12:33

bump.
if a party activist offers to hold your dog when you go in, its probably not cos they are after your vote, its probably because they are bored rigid with saying 'good morning, may I have your number please' ad infinitum.

Cartoose · 06/05/2010 12:35

'Tis true

Bump.

I took DD1 in with me, children aren't allowed to see or write the cross on your paper but they let her post my ballot paper, she was very chuffed.

simpson · 06/05/2010 12:50

Just voted too. Took Dcs (4 & 2) with me also let Ds (4) post ballot papers.

DD (2) on the other hand had an absolute hissy fit (picture screaming child flailing on floor ) because when I told her we were going to vote she thought I said we were going on a boat!!!

NetworkGuy · 06/05/2010 13:02

Don't you just hate love "party activists".

Someone must be desperate down at the Labour party to be searching via Directory Enquiries for my home phone number (I had no landline for years but am ex-directory now) unless they are were sequentially dialling all 10,000 on my exchange a few evenings ago (even more desperate, considered it's supposedly one of their safe seats!)

GetOrfMoiLand · 06/05/2010 13:09

I did not know this!

I scoured the house in rage this morning looking fir the fucking things because DP had ut them in a 'safe place' (aka god knows).

They were in the filing cabinet under 'Bank Statements'

I wish I knew that you didn't need to have the darn cards!

Yes, take your kids. I am making my 14 year old come with me.

GetOrfMoiLand · 06/05/2010 13:12

Oh actually can you who have already voted answer an embarassing question? Do they have the party next to the candidate, or just the candidate's name? I am convinced that it is just the candidate's name, DP says that they have the party they belong to listed as well.

TheProvincialLady · 06/05/2010 13:12

Yes, and also please note that you have to go to the polling station that you are called to and not just any old one you fancy (as the ballot man was trying to explain to an 18 year old who was behind me in the queue and didn't fancy catching the bus back from her friend's house, bless)

TheProvincialLady · 06/05/2010 13:15

Getorf it's both, don't panic.

GetOrfMoiLand · 06/05/2010 13:17

Thanks Provincial. Bugger, now I owe DP a fiver! And lol at that 18 year old, bless him.

Jux · 06/05/2010 13:21

greensnail · 06/05/2010 13:21

I took my card with my but couldn't show it to anyone as DD was clutching clutching onto it for dear life! She got about 10 comments about voters starting young these days as she toddled in with the card though

And yes, they have the party name next to the candidate's name.

Twit · 06/05/2010 13:26

bump for lunch

zazen · 06/05/2010 13:33

.

ShrinkingViolet · 06/05/2010 13:37

independent candidates don't have a party name (kind of obvious, but puzzled me a bit when i was voting earlier, took a while to sink in)

Cartoose · 06/05/2010 13:39

Polling card, shmoling card

CaptainUnderpants · 06/05/2010 13:46

I am going to take my card but am going to refuse to tell the people outside my number - feel a bit of a rebel today

uglymugly · 06/05/2010 13:46

I've just voted and I didn't have my card with me.

Here's some dos and donts from the BBC website: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/election_2010/8661984.stm. I like to put a tick in the box, rather than a cross, because I'm a rebel.

Poledra · 06/05/2010 13:48

trump

oops sorry

venusonarockbun · 06/05/2010 14:05

Isnt your number next to your name on their list and isnt the number on the voting slip transferred next to your name on their list also? - meaning that your vote can be traced and is not secret?

vintage · 06/05/2010 14:08

my 18 year old ds did not get a polling card in does this mean hes not entitled to vote? Hes quite upset about it which is good
