Why is MN pro-labour?

I'm relatively new here, only posted a couple of times.

Not hard to notice it's all a bit hard core left on here...

Why is that? Genuinely curious to know why this particular cohort of people that have come together are pretty much all left wing.

"hard core left "?

Hardly

claig · 05/05/2010 10:44

gingercat12 it is too big a subject to go into. It is very interesting, but it will only lead to lots of abuse being thrown around. But to get a clue about it, look at EggyAllenPoe's excellent links. Remember that the neo-cons come from the left. Read George Orwell.

ooojimaflip · 05/05/2010 10:46

Claig - I've given you a WHOLE thread!

gingercat12 · 05/05/2010 11:03

Thanks Claig. I do read George Orwell, but I was just interested on your take.

claig · 05/05/2010 11:11

George Orwell was fantastic. He was a socialist who went to Eton. He fought in the Spanish Civil War, and that is where he learnt the truth about socialism. He was gutted by what he discovered and it changed him. He wrote to warn us of the future. Jo Brand, who is left-wing, says that 1984 is probably the most important book of the twentieth century.

Molesworth · 05/05/2010 11:13

lol claig

Orwell was telling the truth about totalitarianism, not socialism. What happened in Russia was a failed experiment.

Any fule kno that.

ooojimaflip · 05/05/2010 11:15

Indeed, it's somewhat the point of the dual axes on the political compass site that Claig lieks.

EggyAllenPoe · 05/05/2010 11:16

does anyone else find it disturbing that we have a 'Ministry Of Justice'??

(Minsitry of Peace, and Truth to follow?)

OrmRenewed · 05/05/2010 11:16

Yes it does sound sinister I must admit.

EggyAllenPoe · 05/05/2010 11:18

although Labout falls futher on the 'authoritarian' axis than DCs Conservatives, no?

ooojimaflip · 05/05/2010 11:25

I'd rather government sounded sinister than cuddly tbh.

claig · 05/05/2010 11:28

Millbank is the Ministry of Truth, the speechwriters already litter the speeches with newspeak and doublespeak. 'War is Peace', 'Freedom is Slavery' and 'Ignorance is Strength' are the subtexts of many of the speeches. The obvious dumbing down in education is hidden by the inexorable rise in the number of people achieving A* in their exams, all too reminiscent of Big Brother's ever increasing pig-iron production figures. The proles are kept in a stupour and the Ministry of Truth and the Inner Party (part of the Project) are burning the late-night oil in their attempts to bamboozle the proles and feed them Huxley's soma.

ooojimaflip · 05/05/2010 11:33

Hope lies in the proles.

claig · 05/05/2010 11:36

yes Orwell was right "if there is hope, it lies in the proles".

It was Mrs. Duffy wot won it. The salt of the earth working class will eventually wake up.

PrettyCandles · 05/05/2010 11:38

LOL MN is hardly Labour - look at the poll results. It's just that the Labour types are more vocal about their beliefs.

But I agree very much that a lot of Govt-speak is scarily reminiscent of Orwell's Newspeak.

claig · 05/05/2010 11:38

Mrs. Duffy went out for a loaf of bread and defeated the Inner Party single-handedly. She should be given a knighthood for her services to the people of this country.

ooojimaflip · 05/05/2010 11:40

It doesn't really though.

abr1de · 05/05/2010 11:46

THe thing that utterly hacks me off is this premise that liberal, educated, caring women must be left-wing.

I'm well-educated. I have liberal views on many things, not least on my family's right to get on with our lives with minimal state intervention, and I spend a fair amount of my non-work time involved in community projects. Ditto my husband. Ditto my parents and in-laws.

I vote Tory. I am certainly not alone in doing all the above. What gives people the arrogance to assert that you have to be left-leaning to 'care'?

claig · 05/05/2010 11:47

The Oxbridge educated spin doctors and liars were having kittens over the effect of one little old lady, who was simply worried about the future of her grandchildren. She said she wasn't doing it for herself, she said she "was on the way out", she is getting old. She did it for her grandchildren and God Bless her. Providence helped us on that fateful day when the Great Leader and his entire cortege of spinners and weavers came across the redoutable Mrs. Duffy. Never underestimate the hard-working honest people of this country, those despised by the Inner Party. One day they will actually get the leaders they deserve, people who are proud to serve them rather than shaft them.

ooojimaflip · 05/05/2010 11:49

Claig - the media went mad for it as it was a simple story that was easy to explain. Most people didn't give a shit.

claig · 05/05/2010 11:53

redoubtable

claig · 05/05/2010 12:03

most people are in the stupour induced by the Inner Party. But I can assure you that Brown, Mandelson, Millbank and all the rest of the apparatchiks certainly did give a shit, as they did a handbreak turn and headed for Mrs. Duffy's abode at breakneck speed. They probably broke every speed limit, set speed cameras flashing, and steamed through every redlight on the way back to Rochdale. The Great Leader was probably screaming faster faster to the driver as he foresaw his poll rating plunging further and further. They didn't care about the speeding fines, the taxpayer would have to pay them anyway, they were too busy chatting on their mobile phones whilst driving, in a desperate attempt to spin their way out of it. Mrs. Duffy, the grandmother from Rochdale, had slain the dragon with only her shopping basket. Hope lies eternal, the devil will be defeated, and St. Gillian slew the dragon and left its guts on the kerb of a Rochdale street.

ooojimaflip · 05/05/2010 12:05

Very poetic. I'll bite. What is the Inner Party then?

Molesworth · 05/05/2010 12:05

ROFL
