When will we know the result?

Is it worth staying up all night to watch or will we not know the verdict until the next day? The thought of getting up on Friday and switching on the TV/PC/iPhone etc and finding out that way makes me feel nauseous. So is it worth staying up?!

Given how close it is, I suspect we won't know till quite late on Friday morning. But you should stay up for at least a bit of election night; it is really good fun!

Anyway, here are the estimated declaration times for each constituency (I'm not sure what the numbers on the left mean)

We will have a pretty good idea by 10.00 am Friday but as it looks like being very close and some seats will not start counting until Friday morning, I suspect that the result will not be totally clear until the afternoon.

Even then we may have days of uncertainty as the horsetrading begins. I suspect it might even be Tuesday next week before we know who the Govt is. Not good for the financial markets. The UK Govt bond market is opening specially at 1.00 am on Friday morning to start trading through the night as the results are announced. The currency markets will also be trading. It could cause huge uncertainty and economic damage.

I just hope for a clear result with a quick announcement on Friday night.

ABitBatty · 04/05/2010 22:25

Ahh thanks I just had a Google and some say we could have a good idea between 3-5am. I am staying up!

I think the numbers on the left are the numbers for each seat, in alphabetical order (as Yorkshire East is 650 and i know there are 650 seats).

KillerCleavage · 04/05/2010 22:28

I'm staying up too. Have already booked Friday off.

I would expect it to be the early hours of Friday morning too.

toccatanfudge · 04/05/2010 22:30

oooo we're about 2.30

very marginal seat here

I'll be here - lots of coffee and fags.........but I'll have to keep uptodate online as the TV is in the other room

snickersnack · 04/05/2010 22:33

They announce exit poll results after the polls close at 10 - not hugely reliable but an indication. That list longfingernails linked to is helpful - some of the early reporting seats are key marginals like Battersea so if the Tories are winning lots of these early on then that may be a sign the game is up. Am sure there will be a guide of some sort in Thursday's papers along the lines of "if constituency x reports a xx% swing at xx o'clock then there'll be a hung parliament". Agree that in that case it will go on for days and days and we will have to do the whole thing again in a few months.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/05/2010 22:33

am staying up til about 2am. (or hopefully longer)

we are having an mn party

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/05/2010 22:35

its really exciting

CwtchyMama · 05/05/2010 07:16

3.30a.m for us,i think i will be staying up as we are also in a marginal lab/con.

Does anyone know the key marginals that the cons must win to get a majority?

inmypants · 05/05/2010 07:39

I'll join you all when I get up on Friday morning! It'll be nice to have some friends

The question is how early do I have to get up and do we expect an announcement between 8 and 9.30 GMT because I'm not going to be able to constantly check my iPhone between those hours!!!!

This is about the first time being ahead of the UK has been a good thing....bonus!

whomovedmychocolate · 05/05/2010 07:50

Annoying DS will no doubt wake me up about 4am. Just in time to see the result

ilovemydogandMrBrown · 05/05/2010 07:52

Our poll closes at 22:00. Is this standard?

Northernlurker · 05/05/2010 08:06

We're staying up - should know which way things are going at least.

Lulumaam · 05/05/2010 08:10

Ilovemydog - yes, all polls run from 7am till 10pm.

scaryteacher · 05/05/2010 08:53

Saw that too Humbug; I suppose then we don't know until May 28th in reality then?

hattyyellow · 05/05/2010 09:19

Our constituency is Thirsk and Malton.

But it's so so clearly and well known to be a safe Tory seat, that it probably will not make that much difference to the final results....

(Will still put some lippy on before going to vote, just in case I am snapped coming out! .

Hassled · 05/05/2010 09:23

I want to stay up until 2ish, but I don't think my nerves will be able to stand it. I might have to run away to bed.

BeenBeta · 05/05/2010 09:38

hattyyellow - I read your UKIP candidate recently died so the election in your constituency will be delayed until 27 May 2010.

You might need to delay putting the lippy on for a while. See article here.

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/05/2010 09:42

thanks for link, Longfingernails.

hell - so nothing really starts happening until 1am.
poor tv presenters having to fill in hours of comment based on a handful of results
