When will we know the result?

Is it worth staying up all night to watch or will we not know the verdict until the next day? The thought of getting up on Friday and switching on the TV/PC/iPhone etc and finding out that way makes me feel nauseous. So is it worth staying up?!

We should know all but 20 of the individual seat results by Friday morning. Whether that means we know who is running the country depends on whether someone has an clear majority in parliament - the magical 326 seats. If not, they'll all be getting together behind closed doors sorting out the coalition deals and it could be several days before we find out who's running the country.

It's worth staying up at least for the first few hours of results because the exit polls will give you a good idea what's likely to be happening in the rest of the seats.

BeenBeta was following on from minthumbugs note that our voting was delayed so the whole country will not get their results until we vote..it's the talk of the town in our small village that we can't vote tomorrow!

..lipstick is for the cameras who might possibly be lurking in our high street later this month to see the final seat being voted for!

But I think it will be widely known by candidates and media that it's very unlikely to be anything but a Tory seat..for the millionth year running, so unless it's a hung parliament situation, it is unlikely to be that much of a suprise when our results are finally announced..

minthumbug.

I wonder how much I would irritate the clerical staff at the polling station by insisting on being the last person to vote at 9.59pm and thereby having a chance of being the last person to vote in the country! And maximising my appearing on tv chances...

hattyyellow - ah right sorry for x-post.

The thing is my parents live up near Scarborough and believe it or not they rang me to ask if I knew which constitency they are in. They dont know whether to go and vote in Whitby on Thursday or Malton on 27 May.

Not so much a question of which party for my parents - more a question of which planet!

Democracy - aint its a wonderful thing.

What might have confused your folks is that they have recently changed the constituencies around up here - they've merged several seats and taken out the outskirts of York from our consituency (which had it remained might have made the voting group a little more diverse).

It's become a largely traditional, affluent, retired, agricultural constituency.

You described my parents well:

"It's become a largely traditional, affluent, retired, agricultural constituency."

Does anyone know if there is a place you can get maps of constituency boundaries?

sethstarkaddersmum · 05/05/2010 10:24

couldn't you ring up one of the political parties' local offices and ask? They are bound to have a big map on the wall to make sure they are canvassing in the right place.

Are they in the wards below under Scarborough and Whitby? We got our revised polling cards yesterday telling us when and where to vote so I imagine theirs should arrive soon..

Boundary review
Following their review of parliamentary representation in North Yorkshire, the Boundary Commission for England has made only minor changes to the existing Scarborough and Whitby seat.

The electoral wards used in the newly drawn constituency are;

Castle, Cayton, Central, Danby, Derwent Valley, Eastfield, Esk Valley, Falsgrave Park, Fylingdales, Lindhead, Mayfield, Mulgrave, Newby, North Bay, Northstead, Ramshill, Scalby, Hackness and Staintondale, Seamer, Stepney, Streonshalh, Weaponness, Whitby West Cliff, and Woodlands.

hattyyellow · 05/05/2010 10:36

Beta these are the wards included under Thirsk and Malton - so we have taken two wards from Scarborough, Filey and Hertford. Will go and do some work now!

"Following their review of parliamentary representation in North Yorkshire, the Boundary Commission for England has recommended the creation of a new seat of Thirsk and Malton. This takes electoral wards from Ryedale and Vale of York.

The electoral wards used in the new constituency will be:

The entire district of Ryedale
The Scarborough wards of Filey and Hertford
The Hambleton wards of Easingwold, Helperby, Huby with Sutton, Shipton, Sowerby, Stillington, Thirsk, Thorntons, Tollerton, Topcliffe, White Horse, and Whitestonecliffe"

They live between Fylingdales and Seamer so I guess they are in Whitby. I better tell them. My Dad is a Parish Councillor too. He should know this.

NoahAndTheWhale · 05/05/2010 12:30

There's various websites telling you which constituency you are in, from your postcode. Wikipedia also has articles for each constituency.
