...on the grounds that if we assume there will be a Tory govt, then the crowing triumphalism of all the Chinless Wonders and Thrusting Monetarists and Nasty Racists who'll poke in here to crow and gloat, will somehow force a cosmic rift in the time-space continuum. And it will be like 1992 all over again but the other way round.

I fear the best we can hope for is a hung parliament.

I've suggested hemlock for the Election Night supper thread...

Yep SanctiMoanyArse, I remember the 1992 election very well, cause I was pissed off at not being able to vote (too young by a couple of months).

Everyone was saying Labour would win, didn't happen.

Polls can get it very wrong.

Can I join?

Is it too late to stage a revolution?

Don't answer that.

stainesmassif · 03/05/2010 10:45

i'm not depressed yet, but i would like to join.....i am naively hoping that the 'great british public' will see through the media's relentless gordon bashing and see that david cameron is just margaret thatcher with botox and a less strident manner of speech.

I agree Lenin.

I shall move from mildly depressed to cautious optimism with a heavy dose of pragmatism.

(sounds painful doesn't it )

queenoftheslatterns · 03/05/2010 10:52

can i dip my toe in please? i loathe everything the tories stand for. i hate their sheriff of nottingham approach.

Weren't there rumors of a hung Parliament in 2005 also?

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 03/05/2010 11:09

Signing in too. Most depressed by the fatuous comments on FB about this thread - have you seen the one about how the Tories will stop the gas leaks so making gas more affordable for everyone?

I'd laugh hollowly if it wasn't so tragic.

Although I like the thought of DC down a trench fixing the gas mains. Maybe we could accidentally fill it in while he's down there.

Lyra75 · 03/05/2010 11:22

Signing in.

Very depressed. (But also hoping that just by signing in and being so pessimistic it might somehow, somehow make the result different?!)

happikidz · 03/05/2010 11:31

Depressed and worried but it is not over yet. You can make the difference! Just talk to those of your friends and family that are unsure and explain again and again why you prefer a progressive government. Remember Bush was a Compassionate Conservative too!

allegrageller · 03/05/2010 11:33

yes happikidz, I remember

RobynLou · 03/05/2010 11:54

I'm scared, really scared. as a family we could easily loose a lot if the tories get in. we get by now, just. our life is made liveable by schemes which labour have put in place.
we both work of course, before I get accused of being a 'scrounger' or similar, but we live in london on modest wages with a small child.

AgentProvocateur · 03/05/2010 12:03

Not holding out much hope for Thursday here. I'm in Scotland, so the chances are I will be living in a country with a Conservative Government, yet with no Conservative MPs.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 03/05/2010 12:09

oh yes, WhatFreshHell, that sounds like a great idea. I could do with DC stuck in a gas main forever.

blackmonday · 03/05/2010 12:13

EVERYWHRE I go people have large tory posters in their front gardens/windows etc. no labour ones anywhere!!! has everyone gone completely mad!

usualsuspect · 03/05/2010 12:18

Joining with a heavy heart ..

PinkFuschia · 03/05/2010 12:59

Can I sign in too, please? I've been a Liberal/LibDem supporter my whole life, but am very left of centre, and somewhat about the possibility of NC doing a deal with the Tories.

I was a student in 1979 and cried when Thatcher got in (and when Shirley Williams lost her seat to the Tories ). My recollections of the 80s under Thatcher - I remember organising collections of money, food and Christmas gifts for the Kent miners during the strike; being spat on by a Tory woman as I collected signatures in support of the health workers; the erosion of the 'power' of the unions (who fought to protect the rights of decent ordinary working folk not to be shat on from a great height by management); the abhorent jingostic fervour during the Falklands war (a war that let Thatcher back in in 1983) and having to sell some of my possessions to pay my utility bills.

Cameron's Tories are just the same as Thatcher's Tories; they promote selfishness and greed: an 'I'm alright, Jack, so stuff the rest of you' attitude.

I'm in a safe Tory seat, so will be voting LD according to my conscience and my own views, but I would urge people to vote tactically to keep out the Tories. I am working on a couple of disillusioned Labour friends who live in my old constituency where the Tories are putting up a fight, to carry on voting Labour to keep the bastards out, which is what I would be doing if I still lived there.

I want what is good for everyone in the country, so IMHO a LibLab coalition would be my choice after the election; not just so that we can get the electoral reform that is so dear to the heart of every LD, but so that we can work together for the benefit of all; taking the best from both parties and building a fairer and more equitable society.
That may sound like pie-in-the-sky in the current economic climate, but that's what I want for my family, my community and my country.

Meglet · 03/05/2010 13:05

Joining too. Lone parent, local government job, only ablt to pay the bills & work because of tax credits and childcare tax credits.

8rubberduckies · 03/05/2010 13:33

Can I join? I may possibly be found gouging my eyes out with a teaspoon on Friday morning; I promised a friend whilst very drunk I would do this if the Tories get in this week. I have made a promise so I'll have to follow through and make it happen after May 6th

On a selfish level I am depressed because I am on a middle, but less than average income and work in public sector; funding for my post is up for retendering in April and it aint looking good...

On an ideological level I'm fuming - I'm sorry if I'm repeating anyone else's points, but have not read the whole thread yet, but I am truly fed up with someone I know calling me old-fashioned and backward-thinking because I refuse to consider voting Tory, even if their policies may mean that I could gain in some way. It seems that plenty of people just look at the policies and decide which party is offering them the most this time around and vote accordingly. Has no-one got any belief in sticking with the party that reflects your ideological beliefs and fighting against what you do not?

SpringHeeledJack · 03/05/2010 13:34

PinkFuschia your post made me [sob]

Nymphadora · 03/05/2010 13:36

Lots of labour posters here & lib dem ones around work. Shame about the farmers in between! Hoping that this is a good sign in my area. The only thing worse than a Tory win is a Tory mp. Don't mind a lib dem one as the local one is a nice bloke, met the labour one a couple of times and whilst obviously new labour he seems ok. Tory one doesn't live here and has a job on the other side of the country.

alysonpeaches · 03/05/2010 13:42

Thanks zippy539.

Atlantis, I wasnt a scargill supporter, but did see lots of poor, depressed miners families and Thatcher told them to eat grass. Remember that? No street parties. As for not having to chain things down, we had lots of things stolen from our garden/shed and petrol syphoned from our tank too. I also remember living under threat of the cold war and having all the cheerful leaflets telling me to hide behind my sofa and paint my windows white in case of nuclear attack.

No street parties round here. I was in Sheffield in the early 80s and we and some lovely riots.

But anyway, Im resolving not to visit this thread for a few days because it really is too depressing to contemplate. I was there in the 1980s, I remember it quite clearly, and I do not want another tory Government as long as I live.

PinkFuschia · 03/05/2010 14:32

Sorry to make you cry springheeledjack!
