...on the grounds that if we assume there will be a Tory govt, then the crowing triumphalism of all the Chinless Wonders and Thrusting Monetarists and Nasty Racists who'll poke in here to crow and gloat, will somehow force a cosmic rift in the time-space continuum. And it will be like 1992 all over again but the other way round.

I fear the best we can hope for is a hung parliament.

I've suggested hemlock for the Election Night supper thread...

there their achievements

KristinaM · 04/05/2010 22:32

i am so disappointed with Gordon

i really REALLY wanted to believe he was a man of principle

though i'm not disappointed enough to vote Tory/libDem [weak smile]

TDiddy · 04/05/2010 22:36

Problem with Gordon is that he was born to be Chancellor not moderm PM who is comfortable in own skin like DC, TB, NC.

He reminds me of one of my friend who waited to be go out with girlfriend of another care free friend. When he finally got to go out with her he was sad and no good at being her boyfriend. And the other guy had messed her around and secretly she still wanted other guy....poor Gordon. he spent his life working hard for this.

jenny60 · 04/05/2010 22:39

TDiddy: I know, they've done loads of cool stuff. Why oh why didn't they scream about the minimum wage? The Tories opposed that. Who could vote a party that opposed a minimum wage? I'm just saying that they've let us down in some ways and the war WAS a bigggie, the worst thing a British gov. has done in my lifetime. I won't forget it, but yes, they've done loads and I found a tear in my eye when I saw the speech today. More of that!

TDiddy · 04/05/2010 22:44

jenny60- you are right, the minimum wage...they are so much better on gender issues. harriet harman (i know that the papers hate her) has done so much for equality.

As TB would say, they ran out of road, the pendulum had to swing....alas

Over to you NC. How the labour party would love to have him as PM with his charm?

TDiddy · 04/05/2010 22:46

Thinking about it I think GB's image manager should have kept the mystery around him; kept his bruiser image.

Prince will never be as popular as Michael jackson but he will never lose his appeal...okay I am getting carried away and stretching my analogies..will give it a rest

animula · 04/05/2010 22:48

jenny60 - I think the awful truth is that A LOT of people do not care/are actively hostile to the minimum wage and related stuff.

A lot of the overly powerful swing voters are, I think, rightly or wrongly, assumed to be not that keen on their good money going towards poor people. I suspect we're hearing more about this now precisely because Labour know they've lost a lot of those swing voters, and are going for the faithful-who-might-not-vote. Remember the Euro elections, where Labour voters stayed away in droves?

And there is always the fact that powerful business interests are not that keen on things like the minimum wage. Which is, perhaps, an issue in the media coverage. They finally have a Con government that just might give them what they want and have a chance of election, so 'bye 'bye Labour.

(Still think it would be hilarious if it all backfired with PR.)

Molesworth · 04/05/2010 22:51

GRR @ Dave and his rolled up sleeves schtick

animula · 04/05/2010 22:51

that should read as something about how great if we achieved PR .... .

this is a sign that it is time to go and do some work ....

jenny60 · 04/05/2010 22:52

I'm with you on gender and HH. She is a feminist and is not afraid to say it. No wonder the press hates her .
The economy is fucked and lots of us are going to suffer even more, no matter who wins. But there are other issues that are crucial too and how anyone who cares about human rights and equality can vote for a party that won't stand up to homophobes, makes alliances with nazi nut cases in Europe and opposes the EU social chapter is simply beyond me.

TDiddy · 04/05/2010 22:52

yes, the conservatives must be panicking about:

1)PR

2)A Lib-Lab alliance

Both could obvious put paid to their hopes for some time.

DC is a smart guy who like the coperate world understands that the world is changing and the the Tories will decay unless they change and reflect broader society.

TiggyR · 04/05/2010 22:53

The Tory cabinet may be filled with 'chinless wonders' by next week (if by that you mean expensively educated, privileged men and women) but no more so than the current Labour one I think you'll find, and indeed the Lib Dem one should they make it that far. I'll be voting Tory and I don't fit into any of the three charming categories you describe. Lazy sterotyping beneath you, Wilfsell.

said · 04/05/2010 22:53

"GRR @ Dave and his rolled up sleeves schtick" - I bet he (or adviser) read that thread on here about how women find it a turn-on. Not any longer.

TDiddy · 04/05/2010 22:55

DC uses the "i met a black man" variant of "my best friends are black" and GB slips up with bigotgate.

GB gets slated and hardly anyone notices DC.

Yes HH has done good and made real change. she has stuck to it and used her time in office well.

Molesworth · 04/05/2010 22:58

Gah @ the thought of Dave advisers trying to sex him up by baring forearms

jenny60 · 04/05/2010 22:58

Oh yes, the rolling up sleeves thing drives me crazy. He's clearly used to really hard work!
Animula: I know you're right but I still say those people are wrong and we should keep telling them that. And not making Labour achievements a bigger part of the campaign hasn't worked so maybe we need to try being proud of what has been done on gender and equality issues. GB's speech today was the frist one that's made me really sit up and I know I'm not the only one. It might have been a case of preaching to the converted, but there are probably loads of Labour people out there who maybe weren't going to vote or were going to vote LD who wanted to hear just what we heard today.

animula · 04/05/2010 22:59

Dave, the horny handed son of toil (or something), all set, sleeves rolled up, to unblock the U-bend of the loo of the economic crisis, filled with paper and poo and in danger imminent of overflowing.

He comes to us, our hero, holding a soggy soft toy (don't get too close, it probably smelss,). Father of the nation. Husband of us all.

Sleeves still rolled up. But hair a bit less ooofy now, perhaps.

Molesworth · 04/05/2010 23:00

I've already booked a doctors appointment to get some anti-depressants come Friday morning

Molesworth · 04/05/2010 23:06

I'm going to have to copy and paste that post so I can print it out and magnet it to my fridge animula

Bless Dennis Skinner's cotton socks, trying to keep spirits up on Facebook

TDiddy · 04/05/2010 23:11

I feel like NC should get it. He would put DC out of business

WilfSell · 04/05/2010 23:16

No, by chinless wonders I mean those without chins from years of inbreeding,Tiggy. And stereotypes are rarely beneath me: I like a bit of mudslinging in an election. S'no worse than Dave 'sleeves' Cameron carving on about workshy benefit claimants.

And Osborne doesn't have a chin. I rest my case.
