It appears most people have the view that all parties are pretty much the same and lets face it we don?t really trust any of them that much.

However there does seem to be an overriding difference between the three parties that stands out a mile and that has a huge impact on us all i.e. it appears that only the Conservatives believes that we should have freedom and that the state should not control our lives, for example:

  1. That the state should not take more and more of our hard earned money and decide how it is spent (and very often spend it far less efficiently than us)
  2. That the state should not be allowed to tell us what we can or cannot do every minute of the day (and then ironically not deal very well with crime).
  3. That the state should not tie us all up in ever increasing red tape and legislation whether you are a business, a teacher, a medical professional, a Police officer etc. etc.
  4. That the state should not take it upon themselves to give away our sovereignty and rights to Europe without asking us first (and lets not forget the many who died in wars fighting for our rights and sovereignty).
  5. The list goes on and on.

If the above is important to us it appears that the Conservatives are the only choice.
We know what Labour are about in terms of the state (we have seen it in practice for 13 years) and it looks like the Liberals are no different (just hopefully a lot nicer, cleaner and charming about it). PS I am not a troll btw just in case you were wondering

and the reason there is a massive shortage of social housing now....oh yes, thanks Maggie, that was you too!

LakeDistrictLardArse · 27/04/2010 19:30

Is it possible that Cameron will be different from Thatcher? That was a long time ago after all????

OP posts:
weegiemum · 27/04/2010 19:30

New Member or Name Changer.

Only posts are not these, but all are today.

Funny how someone who Just Arrived thinks she can tell us how to vote.

LakeDistrictLardArse · 27/04/2010 19:32

Weegiemum Not telling you how to vote at all....just airing my take on the situation..

OP posts:
TheFirstLady · 27/04/2010 19:37

Thatcher may be a long time ago to you, dear, but some of us have been around the block around a few times and still have not succumbed to senility sufficiently to find your somewhat naive line of argument convincing.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 27/04/2010 19:37

Feel I need to mention that on the continuum of personal liberty = = = > nanny state, the Lib Dems swing more towards the personal liberty side, eg ID cards.

OP - do you want to throw out some examples of this 'red tape' or 'stifling of enterprise' that Labour has been doing?

weegiemum · 27/04/2010 19:37

"If the above is important to us it appears that the Conservatives are the only choice"

Sounds like it to me.

But funny enough, in Glasgow they just ain't.

But then, the things that seem to be important to you just aren't to me - I want to pay more tax for the benefit of others, I am comfortable with state intervention for our common good, where I live teachers (I am one) are not bound up in red tape even thought the Scottish govt is much more left wing than in England, I am up for more integration into Europe and my list also goes on and on - in a totally non-tory way.

I'm not even a dyed in the wool left wing working class tory voter - my husband is a doctor and despises tory plans for the NHS, as I despise their education policy.

elliemental · 27/04/2010 19:41

your use of 'we' makes it sound as though you are speaking for us all. You're not. You are entitled to your opinion of course.

LakeDistrictLardArse · 27/04/2010 19:47

weegiemum Aahhhh! A teacher and a doctor eh? Makes a bit more sense now, public sector employees, no particular interest in stimulating the economy and as a teacher you will want the ridiculous anti-home education rules they advocate.

OP posts:
weegiemum · 27/04/2010 19:50

nothing to do with anti home schooling.

Lots to do with the totally ridiculous plans to let parents make up their own schools.

Won't affect us anyway as we are in Scotland so at least our schools will remain non-denominational and not run by crayzee parents.

You might want to think a lot more before disparaging public sector employees, I would think. Who looks after you when you are sick?

thursdaynamechange · 27/04/2010 19:50

Thatcher

nuff said

clearly you are too young

or a bit thick

weegiemum · 27/04/2010 19:52

I'm actually going to hide this and duck out now actually.

I have better things to do with my life than to debate with a thoughtless English Tory with no understanding of how other people choose to vote or live.

ANd really, I think MN is not the place for this kind of shameless canvassing, and am reporting your OP.

thursdaynamechange · 27/04/2010 19:52

Tories = keeping the money to themselves, passing it on to their children, paying less tax for the rich (so therefore proportionally more for the poor).

Utterly protectionist party, only interested in increasing the gap between rich and poor.

Pronoia · 27/04/2010 19:54

I don't want the economy to be 'stimulated' at the expense of my child's education, my mother's much needed operation, and the restigmatisation of my single mother status.

LakeDistrictLardArse · 27/04/2010 19:55

Heathen Not got much time as I am doing tea (very glam) but IMO nanny state is telling you what you can and can't do with your children even if you are a good parent, tying people up with health and safety unnecessarily, not being able to reasonably defend your family/property and killing enterprise again only IMO, hiking up business rates until small businesses simply can't afford them, EMPLOYERS NI, wtf?? Just in case anyone doesn't know (and no I am not suggesting anyone is thick before I get roasted) an employer has to pay a percentage of the amount each employee pays NI, what the hell for? Isn't it good enough that businesses are employing people and keeping them off the dole?

OP posts:
thatsnotmymonkey · 27/04/2010 19:55

LDLA- I just don't know where to begin, it has been said before. But please please do not tell us how to vote with silly ill informed little lists, and please please read some tory history. Poll tax anyone?

weegiemum I salute you!

Rival28 · 27/04/2010 19:58

I just want to know who better to vote for to stop the conservatives getting power.

policywonk · 27/04/2010 19:58

Well this went well

cornsilk · 27/04/2010 19:59

'red tape, nanny state mentality and the stifling of enterprise'
Exactly what Gove intends to inflict on us teachers
I would never vote Conservative.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 27/04/2010 19:59

Isn't there a ban on new members posting on political threads? If not, then there should be.

TheFirstLady · 27/04/2010 20:00

Not just naive, but patronising and badly informed as well. Well done, Conservative Central Office, with this OP you really are spoiling us.

cornsilk · 27/04/2010 20:02

I also remember Thatcher and the nice (I think it was yellow)letter I got from the court for not paying my poll tax on time as an extremely skint student in rented accomodation. Happy days.

said · 27/04/2010 20:02

"Isn't it good enough that businesses are employing people and keeping them off the dole?"

I think that says it all really. Next you'll be saying employees have damn cheek to expect paid holidays or sick pay. Hell, why not even scrap the minimum wage, teh ungrateful bastards
