Anyone else shocked by Cameron's comment last night or is it just me?!

Attempting to answer the very first question last night, the immigration one, Cameron said:
"I was in Plymouth recently and a black man told me that immigration is out of control in this country"! I fail to see what does the race of the man have anything to do with the statement unless: a) Cameron assumes that all black people must be immigrants in one way or another or b) he is just so proud of himself for managing to talk to a black man that he had to share it.

I really am gobsmacked!

And then he moved on to confusing China with North Korea when talking about the need for Trident as protection from rogue nuclear states!

Anyone else smells racism?!

No need to say he was a black man IMO tbh I think most of what comes out of his mouth is bullsh*t...

jenniferturkington · 16/04/2010 09:43

Yes, I noticed that too, but it didn't surprise me. All of his comments on immigration were awful, obviously appealing to the Daily Mail readers.

SusanSocks · 16/04/2010 09:50

well presumably he meant the blackman must have been an immigrant at some point.

GoingPostal · 16/04/2010 09:51

I think he said that the man himself had come to the country at the age of 6, so was an immigrant, who been in the Navy (so had contributed to the country as a valued economic citizen)... and even that person was concerned that immigration has gone too far.

but it did rather come across as "some of my best friends are black".

ButterPie · 16/04/2010 09:53

That is bizzare! Surely no intelligent person still thinks that anyone with anything less than milk white skin is an immigrant?

andagain · 16/04/2010 09:53

That is exactly my point, he clearly thinks that the man couldn't have possibly been British born as he is black!

I am not surprised at all at his views (given the parties he is "friendly" with in Europe, various Nazi leaning, homophobic and similar ghastly lot) but am just surprised that he "outed" himself last night.

OP posts:
jenniferturkington · 16/04/2010 09:59

Exactly, it didn't matter if that particular man was British born or an immigrant, it was DC's implication that a black man couldn't be anything other than an immigrant. At least that's how it came across to me. So yes, OP I think you are right, he was/is basically racist.

noddyholder · 16/04/2010 10:00

If you listen to what he said it doesn't make sense. He said he met a 40 yr old black man who came here aged 6 and had served in the navy for 30 years making him 10 when he joined???????

Fliight · 16/04/2010 10:02

the bloke does seem to be hoisting the party by their own petard, now it's really got going.

Beofre the campaign he was just a #niceish family man int he abckground' but now he's proving to be a bit of an eejit with actually, nothing to say.

VinegarTitsOnaDiet · 16/04/2010 10:04

I didnt watch it, but it doesnt suprise me, the man spouts shit every time he opens his mouth

Thromdimbulator · 16/04/2010 10:13

Yes, I noticed too. I've been trying to persuade myself that he might not be too bad... but his Daily Mail style anecdotes scared me. (Had quite a lot of fun guessing what he'd come out with next though.)

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 16/04/2010 10:14

To be fair the 'black man' that he was talking about had come to the country so therefore was an immigrant himself, but still thought immigration was out of control. That's why he used him as an example.

Still, it was a pretty stupid example, an immigrant complaining about a system that has let him make a home in this country. Not really sure what DC's point was.

noddyholder · 16/04/2010 10:16

But the colour of his skin is irrelevant.Immigrants can be any colour!BAD gaffe

VinegarTitsOnaDiet · 16/04/2010 10:20

but why couldnt he have said 'i was talking to a man, who came here when he was 6'

instead of 'i was talking to a black man....'

his colour is irrelevant

LilyBolero · 16/04/2010 10:21

This is what he said (from the transcript)

"I was in Plymouth recently, and a 40-year-old black man made the point to me. He said, "I came here when I was
six, I've served in the Royal Navy for 30 years. I'm incredibly proud of my country. But I'm so ashamed that we've had this
out-of-control system with people abusing it so badly." If we don't address immigration properly, we're letting down
immigrant communities, as well as everybody else."

So this man came to Britain aged 6, 4 years later joined the Navy at the age of 10, and then conveniently told David Cameron all about it....

noddyholder · 16/04/2010 10:22

cringe

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 16/04/2010 10:22

Yep, you're absolutely right, and I think DC is a twat, but I was trying to be 'balanced' as DH thinks I have an automatic hatred of the Tories!

MojoLost · 16/04/2010 10:23

He was making the point that not just the white english people but also the immigrants that re now english would benefit from better immigration control

noddyholder · 16/04/2010 10:24

But the colour of their skin is irrelevant to their being immigrants

TrillianAstra · 16/04/2010 10:24

I can see the point in referencing the man's skin colour - not just BNP white racists are anti-immigration.

LilyBolero · 16/04/2010 10:30

Imo this man did not exist, he was created on the spur of the moment to make DC 'sound good'. Unfortunately DC clearly can't do maths.

BariatricObama · 16/04/2010 10:32

it is his 'jo the plumber' moment! here's hoping the 'black man' comes forward and completely embarrasses him

SparklyGothKat · 16/04/2010 10:33

lol, completely made up then, what a twat!

bobbiewickham · 16/04/2010 10:34

Yes, I raised my eyebrows at that one.
