Has Andy Burnham ended up as PM somewhat under false pretences?

Please note that this is from a left wing Labour supporting paper.

It turns out that the marvellous redevelopment of Manchester that was the central plank of his credibility to become PM was triggered by the fall of Mubarak in Egypt in 2011 and what were effectively, or previously close to, bribes set up by the then Tory government to retain our massive defence contracts with the Middle East.

The owners of Man City, recently found guilty of breaking well over 100 financial football rules, are heavily involved. UK developers were excluded from access to large development contracts. Man City was sold a deal including the naming rights to the stadium, owned by the council, for £750k a year when professional rights brokers estimate the market value to be between £10m and £15m a year for the name alone.

The question is, did a local Mayor with no experience outside politics and only a tiny amount of experience of cabinet roles, (3 jobs in 3 years), get to be Prime Minister without a challenge on the strength of the development of the centre of his city that he actually only had a small part in creating?

Lord Mandelson taught us that sexual offences mean nothing to Labour Grandees.

Edited

Inaction over alleged sexual offences isn't peculiar to Labour. It is a problem for other parties too and in wider society.

Isn't that why you mentioned Mandelson?

That makes it ok then.

Just spotted this - how apt!

Marine Le Pen’s EU dream is a nightmare for Brussels

Readers of a nervous disposition, look away now.

The year is 2030 and French President Marine Le Pen’s sweeping overhaul of both her own country and the EU shows no sign of slowing down.

The Berlaymont, or the European Commission’s HQ, has been repurposed as the Ministry of National Sovereignty, except for the 13th floor - the current work base and living quarters of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen - which is now a cat cafe.

Le Pen vows to downsize EU

One wonders what the writer here has been smoking 😂.

Nor was Lou Haigh

Louise Haigh had already been selected as the Labour candidate for the 2015 general election when she was convicted. She was selected for the Sheffield Heeley constituency in May 2014 - convicted of fraud in November 2014. Ideally, she should have been deselected by her local branch. Voters were not told of her recent conviction.

So you agree she wasn’t an elected politician.

No, obviously not. No one said it was ok. But it demonstrates the hypocrisy of bringing up Mandelson in the first place.

Classic whataboutery!

Sexual abuse cases regarding MPs in Parliament, involving some Labour MPs, is classic whataboutery.

Seriously.

Can I respectfully ask that you don't quote me anymore @HelpMyBlackLabradorVotesReform

It's that double standard again. Perfectly OK for fans of the right to whatabout concerning Labour politicians, but the moment someone on the other side mentions politicians on the right who have done wrong it's suddenly a Great Internet Wrong. You couldn't make it up.

I vaguely recall it previously took Labour three years to investigate an allegation of sexual harassment…

That’s certainly true. The whataboutery was started when Mandelson was mentioned, it’s totally appropriate to call out the hypocrisy there.

No-ones mentioned the two tory PMs that collected themselves three pcns for breaking the law and accepting a caution whilst actually PM.

That is outrageous behaviour.

Now now, stop it with the whataboutery. Only Labour politicians ever do any wrong. Or if it's otherwise, this Must Never Be Mentioned.

Clearly four of those MPs are Labour MPs. Also, missing from that list and more recently, (former) Labour MPs Dan Norris, Geraint Davies, Conor McGinn and Chris Matheson.

The very long list I have seen mostly involves Labour councillors but clearly MPs as well.

I vaguely recall Johnson having to resign because he wouldn’t sack sex offender Chris Pincher.

No British Prime Minister has ever accepted a formal police caution (an out-of-court disposal that serves as an official admission of guilt)
