Has Andy Burnham ended up as PM somewhat under false pretences?

Imdunfer · 25/10/2026 08:19

Please note that this is from a left wing Labour supporting paper.

It turns out that the marvellous redevelopment of Manchester that was the central plank of his credibility to become PM was triggered by the fall of Mubarak in Egypt in 2011 and what were effectively, or previously close to, bribes set up by the then Tory government to retain our massive defence contracts with the Middle East.

The owners of Man City, recently found guilty of breaking well over 100 financial football rules, are heavily involved. UK developers were excluded from access to large development contracts. Man City was sold a deal including the naming rights to the stadium, owned by the council, for £750k a year when professional rights brokers estimate the market value to be between £10m and £15m a year for the name alone.

The question is, did a local Mayor with no experience outside politics and only a tiny amount of experience of cabinet roles, (3 jobs in 3 years), get to be Prime Minister without a challenge on the strength of the development of the centre of his city that he actually only had a small part in creating?

As an aside, I thought it was quite amusing that Kemi Badenoch posted 'Vote Boris' [for London Mayor] on Harriet Harman's web page.

Does this childish nonsense behove you as an adult? @Clavinova

And the leader of the opposition should not be behaving in this way.

She didn't - it was 2008. Andy Burnham was fined for speeding in 2023.

I take it that you don't approve of stunts by Led By Donkeys and others?

Ah, that’s ok - I am just happy that you take the trouble to read them!

You could always skip/ignore, of course.

There's serious discussions to be had in this thread yet it descends into "don't hound me, I'm delicate and I want my mummy" answers.

Does robust and intelligent debate trigger you?

It does look that way sometimes. But robust debate should be something we all relish on a lively politics thread.

Le Pen's dream is a nightmare for anyone who isn't a racist and a Putin fan.

Leave voters will be thrilled regardless.

Lively?

It's under a thread title that's quite frankly given up the ghost.

The opinions are never supported by links, wild assertions everywhere. Even promotion of gambling.

A sixth form debating society would never consider this a lively debate.

Hacking someone else’s computer is a criminal offence. Badenoch was extremely fortunate that Harman was so benevolent. I doubt she’d be so generous if she was the victim. Are we really scraping the barrel with speeding offences? At least the examples you cite didn’t turn their spouses into criminals by asking them to take their points like Chris Hulme.

Are we really scraping the barrel with speeding offences?

I could mention that Harriet Harman reversed her car into another vehicle whilst using her mobile phone in a separate incident, or that Andy Burnham has a convicted fraudster in his Cabinet. Not to mention that Jonathan Reynolds lied about qualifying as a solicitor (he didn't qualify).

No, I meant that it ought to be that way on a politics thread. It’s disappointing that it isn’t like that on MN anymore. Or in Westminster either for that matter.

You going right through the bottom of that barrel now, Clav. If you google enough I’m sure some nerd will have listed all the parking fines Labour politicians have collected.

Just spotted this - how apt!

Marine Le Pen’s EU dream is a nightmare for Brussels

Readers of a nervous disposition, look away now.

The year is 2030 and French President Marine Le Pen’s sweeping overhaul of both her own country and the EU shows no sign of slowing down.

The Berlaymont, or the European Commission’s HQ, has been repurposed as the Ministry of National Sovereignty, except for the 13th floor - the current work base and living quarters of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen - which is now a cat cafe.

Le Pen vows to downsize EU
https://www.politico.eu/article/le-pen-downsize-eu-contribution-cut-brussels/

Le Pen vows to downsize EU is the laugh I need today.

A woman who politically stabbed her own father in the back, and politically paid dearly for it, is going to downsize. Oh my giddy days. Brilliant 👌

I'm not sure about parking fines - someone did post a long list of Labour politicians arrested/convicted for sex offences recently.

Lord Mandelson taught us that sexual offences mean nothing to Labour Grandees.

It's a demonstrative list of not being in the post, apart from equalities minister, for very long. Moved sideways. This crab like behaviour does not make a supportive leadership. She should go.

If there is - doubtful, people post all kinds of shit on here - there will be an equally long one of politicians from other parties. The former leader of the DUP, who supported May’s minority government, is currently serving 15 years for child sex abuse. Shame Clav didn’t save that list.

Nor was Lou Haigh

Louise Haigh had already been selected as the Labour candidate for the 2015 general election when she was convicted. She was selected for the Sheffield Heeley constituency in May 2014 - convicted of fraud in November 2014. Ideally, she should have been deselected by her local branch. Voters were not told of her recent conviction.

Leader of the Opposition Kemi Badenoch.

She’s certainly been moved about a lot, though it also reflects just how unsettled the Tory government was, with all the changes of PM. And yet right wing posters carry on about how Burnham doesn’t have a mandate.
