Should we tolerate this in the UK?

I am aware that other cultures have different values and traditions, but should we really be tolerating this sort of behaviour in the UK?

https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-16199187/Exposed-British-imams-telling-men-beat-wives-say-NO-sex-police-ministers-failing-crack-them.html

Yet it seems that certain political parties are willing to turn a blind eye to this sort of thing so that they can secure votes from a certain section of the electorate who often vote as a family unit.

I really thought we had moved on from this sort of thing in the West, but disappointingly it seems I am sadly mistaken.

British imams telling men to beat their wives if they say NO to sex

Sitting before his many followers, a preacher dressed in white urges the men to hit their wives if they refuse to be 'called to bed for intimacy'.

There’s a huge difference between men committing domestic violence despite what’s taught in schools and churches, and men being taught by their leaders that DV is the appropriate response to a woman resisting rape.

Huge difference and it’s disingenuous to suggest otherwise.

Exactly this... odd how some are overlooking this.

Absolutely, but sadly it seems we seem to be importing more and more of these young men on a daily basis from third world cultures where women are generally treated like second class citizens.

In all these cases, (which are appalling), I think we also have to look at how British men also treat women. If we want to address this, then I think we should start at home. I have been looking at the figures recently and it’s horrendous. Yes, people doing this from other countries is also horrendous, but to me it feels like it’s a bit of a scapegoat. Where were all these people that cared about women before?

Let’s fight all crimes against women. It makes me so angry that we only count when people have an agenda.

You're making out that the problem is solely down to Islam. It isn't. Christian fundamentalism in the US espouses exactly the same themes, that men have rights to the bodies of women, whether that be their wives, or women in general. It is spreading to the UK, and ignoring that fact smells of racism.

If this is something you really have a problem with, and of course, everyone should have a problem with it, ignoring the rise of the Christian fundamentalists belies your claims of horror at the appalling misogyny and violence. It all needs calling out, not just the Islamic version, but the Christian version too.

Eta - it ain't fringe conspiracy. If you seriously think it is, you're not watching.

Edited

This thread specifically IS about an Islamic problem with regard to the promotion of domestic violence, rape and and abuse of women. I agree that there are issues with other men from other backgrounds too, but please do go and start your own thread about these and stop trying to distract from and minimise THIS specific problem.

It's coming, OP. If you're not aware of the behaviour of some Christian nationalist preachers in the US, you should do a bit of reading. The likes of Yaxley Lennon and Tommo what's his name are espousing Christianity among their followers, likely being bankrolled by the US Christian far right.

Your hard won rights as a woman (and tbh, if you think women in the UK are treated equally to men you're incredibly naive) are in danger of being steamrollered by people purporting to be Christian but in reality are just following the money.

And it's not just quasi religious types - what about Andrew Tate and his ilk? Followed by thousands of stupid young men who believe they're entitled to sex with women.

Absolutely agree. This was an interesting article. Seems the people who say things for ‘religion’ aren’t actually practicing.

Christian nationalism in Britain driven by people who seldom go to church, says report

Research challenges the notion that the growing visibility of crosses and other symbols reflects a revival of Christianity

revert muslim here. I’ve never heard this ever spoken about during Islamic classes and I have attended many and listened to the teachings of the imam on many occasions. I was married to a white catholic man who abused me and quite literally tried to destroy my life and now happily married to a Muslim man who is kind, provides and protects me as do his brothers to their wives and as do his friends. I can’t read the article as I will not pay to read such rubbish and it’s again more news to divide us all further. An agenda is being pushed about Muslims and migrants and it is false. The failings of this country have nothing to do with Islam or migrants.

As far as I am aware, women are usually segregated at most mosques, so it would be unlikely that these Imam's were preaching this filth to a room filled with women. Just to their husbands.

This is so unhinged. It goes against the principles of Islam and he is clearly a minority as no man in their right mind would agree with this. Did you know Islam forbids sex whilst a woman is menstruating because of HER feeling uncomfortable and not up to it? Did you know that foreplay is classed as a good deed and it’s disliked for a man to fail to attempt to satisfy his wife before himself? Or that being unhappy with your sex life is grounds for a woman to ask for a divorce? There are so many more rights, rites and rituals proscribed for protecting a woman’s interests that are overlooked!

also even IF which it doesn’t - Islam says that above all you have to abide by the law of the land you live in first and foremost and then by the laws of god/allah where they are compatible. E.g: if a country forbid you from head coverings, you wouldn’t be sinning as you’re following the law of the land you live in. I genuinely believe Islam is one of the most misunderstood religions and culture has a huge part to play in that. A lot of the far east is uncivilised and lack education. They entwine culture with religion and end up with this nonsense!

On a separate note, let’s remind ourselves that marital rape was sadly only criminalised in our country in the modern era. 😢 Gangs like the M.O.B cult are rife in the U.K and are made up of predominantly white men who share these types of barbaric views. It’s deeply worrying and concerning.

Did you know that in some Islamic countries, men are allowed to marry and have sexual relations with girls as young as 12 with approval from a male judge, guardian or other person in appropriate authority?

You might want to look at the ‘teachings’ of a pastor called Doug Wilson from Idaho, and his promotion of the so-called Christian Golden Age. It’s a favourite of Pete Hegseth.

I assume he’s not preaching in the UK, is he?

I do have to ask, if the principles of Islam are so wonderfully enlightened, then why are women's rights generally so utterly abysmal in majority Muslim countries?

I have no love for Christianity either (and a lot of American Christianity is a putrid mess), or any religion... But one has to admit that Islam doesn't exactly make a great showing of itself in the modern world, given the treatment of women in countries where it holds the most sway.

I came back from a diving holiday in Egypt last week. At the resort (Dahab), and apart from the hotel cleaners, seldom an Egyptian woman to be seen out and about anywhere. Just the guys allowed outside it seems. I did venture into the area of town where the locals lived for a few hours and saw a few women carrying shopping. But that was about it. The women generally seem to be kept indoors. How delightfully modern and progressive it all seemed.

Which I agree is frankly revolting.

The political parties speaking out against this openly welcome domestic abusers who do exactly the same. I'm not sure the cultural differences you think exist are particularly varied.

Genuinely asking who and what cases or examples? I don’t know of political parties accepting domestic abusers?

Ignorant of what? What are you actually taking issue with? What facts are you disputing?

You're not really making a brilliant argument, here. It sounds rather like you're just trying to minimise and dismiss a case of male violence purely because of the culture that the men come from, with an added dollop of 'whataboutism'.

ghostyslovesheets · Yesterday 23:58

Didn’t something like 45% of patriots attacking the hotels have convictions for DV?

Do I think this Iman is right? Or correctly interpreting the teachings of Islam - no absolutely not

Do I think those views are exclusive to Islam also absolutely not - stop making it an ideological issue- male violence against women is a male issue and it’s silly to think it’s not systematic in all religions and in society - people are right to mention right wing Christianity in this debate because it’s relevant- if you are going to condemn religious for oppression of women don’t confine it to just Islam - it’s too obvious- some American Christians want to ban women from voting

But this is an article about a Muslim leader in the UK, actively preaching violence against Muslim women. Are there Christian leaders in the UK, actively preaching violence against Christian women? If so, there should probably be another thread made about them.

I haven’t minimized male violence whatsoever. Perhaps you should take this up with OP, who thinks that white British men only “occasionally” inflict domestic abuse.

Why? Do you want to discuss how religion combines with political ideology to harm women or is it just when Islamic preachers do it - if so do you turn a blind eye to the rest? Why?

Imams, there are many Imams mentioned in the article, not just one. And if their interpretation of Islam is so wrong, then why are they even allowed to hold their current positions of influence? And why have the Islamic community, or their leaders, never been vocal in condemning the rape gangs? Or universally condemning the various terror attacks perpetrated by Islamic terrorists? Why is it that our Xmas markets are now surrounded by concrete and steel bollards? Is it because of the right-wing Christians? Why is it that airport security is so tight these days - those damn Christians again!

It is of no surprise that people flinging bricks at hotels are likely to have prior convictions. The media like to focus on these people to discredit the concerns of ordinary people who feel the same. The vast majority of people at all of these protests have been peaceful, often families, or local women concerned for the safety of themselves and their children. The police were actually filmed busing in counter protesters to one of the demos recently to stir up trouble.
