Is Reform done for?

The last several recent national polls indicate that the election of Burnham as leader has seen Labour retake the lead and would probably form a minority government (or better) if an election was held tomorrow. Reform meanwhile is in the low 20s, while they’re were averaging low 30s just six months ago. Do you think it’s game over for Reform in terms of the next election? Is Burnham enough to secure the next election for Labour? Or could Reform claw it back still?

Which was voted for by a majority in parliament including opposition MPs. Howard, who was leader of the opposition at the time, said he’d have done exactly the same thing.

That was only because wrong information was put to Parliament about the fictitious "Weapons of Mass Destruction

There isn’t currently a deputy PM.

The Convicted Fraudster is certainly acting like she is deputy PM whilst Burnhams away, under her role of First Secretary of State. Maybe that is just a fraudster being a fraudster.

Reform, they have been routed by a positive campaign and they can't cope with the fact they they've been found out. Money laundering, links to Russian money, links to convicted fraudster. It's all coming home to roost. Absolute bunch of crooks and would have sold out every working person had they got close to power.

Lee Anderson arrested by the French immigration service for illegally entering France puts their naval plans to the reality check....they are an absolute shower if jokers and crooks.

There hasn't been a positive campaign. There has been a sprinkling of sweeties. Everyone like sweeties. We are yet to find out how much they will cost us. Apparently we might know in October how much we will all have to pay.

dwordle · 08/08/2026 14:07

So the prime minister can't have a holiday...how often did Bojo go away....or what about Farage and his parliament attendance.... sorry don't buy it

I don't care how much it costs, invest now worry about the cost later...debt doesn't matter...what matters more is people.

Does giving people £75 off their energy bill now really count as investing?

But that isn't using your critical thinking is it ? That's just ducking my question.
So, how did your critical thinking help you arrive at that conclusion?

In fairness, I've applied critical thinking over several posts on the thread.
You have made a number of statements and suggestions to which I've responded, having thought them through critically and explained why they are flawed.
The PM has also put forward ideas to which I've applied the same process and concluded that his are a viable way to address the problem. Specifically, the move to give equal weight in education to technical and practical skills with theoretical and academic ones; creation of apprenticeships; investment in mental health support; and transport subsidies, so people are more mobile to access jobs. I think these are sound ideas that will go a long way to addressing the issue.
You now appear to be conflating critical thinking with the generation of additional origional ideas. Which is difficult when I think Burnham's already tick most boxes.
The only thing I would add, building on from the point about the third sector, is that I'd like to see some investment there so they can afford to offer work experience. By their nature, not for profits give better value for money, and bring the additional value of their charitable work.

Anyone can come up with good ideas. But there's a vacuum as to how he's going to pay for them. Until we get the latter, no one can possibly be "happy" about his spending ideas.

Well one would assume the investment in getting young NEETS into work will work out cheaper than keeping them on benefits. If it does, we will all be happy, surely?

@dwordle It seems your previous post at 13.06 wasn't quite accurate.
No arrests have been made.
Lee Anderson his camera crew and reporters had their papers checked and were stopped from going onto the beach.
Seems accuracy isn't your strong point is it?

No he was arrested....sent packing...

But Healey has said there is no new money for it? That isn't an area of investment. It has got be funded by cutting elsewhere in education. It's a nice soundbite but without clearer plans who knows if it will work. So far there is a lot that is being funded by re-prioritisation. Until we know where it is being de-prioritised is hard to conclude whether it is a better or not.

I imagine the idea is that it would pay for itself eventually by easing the burden young NEETS put on for welfare, and creating more tax payers.
Whether people think that's a priority area for spending is always going to be subjective I guess. But that doesn't prevent me from thinking the ideas are those most likely to resolve the problem of young NEETS.

The current NEETS have already missed the boat for technical education in schools. They are hardly going to have 19 years olds going to back into year 10 go TCSE plumbing.

No, of course not. But we cant just keep fire fighting the same problem with each new generation can we? We need to address the problem we have now, which the other measures seek to do, AND prevent it from occurring in the future, which is where the changes in education come in.

Do you have the facts? Because the articles linked by a different poster do not confirm that £100 million was spent on a defunct scheme. If you’re going to spread it as a fact you should probably have some supporting evidence. I’m not actually super invested in the issue but it doesn’t seem like you have a strong argument about it.

Google is your friend look it up loads of articles on it. If you are not super invested why are you so bothered? A strong argument?? What are you talking about? It is a well known fact!

Because that is an entirely different problem and it's an effort to reduce the impact of the wars....Farage on the other hand thinks windmills are the cause.

Look on the French news papers, he arrived without going through immigration. He was stopped, his credentials checked established he had no right to be there and told he must leave. He was the escorted out of French territory by the French navy.

This is the point he was trying to demonstrate the reform plan of using the navy to return boats back to France.... unfortunately the French navy is more than capable of playing ping pong.

Lee Anderson appeared to call it a mercy mission saying it did not break French law. Unfortunately the heavily armed police thought otherwise

Reform are pathetic. Nasty populist party with no plan for the UK other than to divide us.

So he wasn't arrested then...... I'm no fan of reform - I want binny to win this week. But making up lies doesn't help your cause.

Your point about the French navy makes no sense - there are no small boat crossings for people trying to get from the UK to France.

I agree with the principal. I just struggle to decide whether it is a good idea to re-prioritize education spending to TCSEs without knowing where it is coming form. SEN budget? Teacher numbers? Stopping teaching history maybe. I don't see lots of excess spend that can be cut - in several of our local state schools the PTA seem to have to buy text book and computers already.

I suppose some of the funds would be diverted from the academic offer currently available on the basis that some students wouldn't require it as they were going down the new route. So not stopping teaching history, but reducing the amount of history being taught by teaching it only to those students who chose that route rather than the technical one.
At the moment there's a great deal of resources wasted by forcing students with no interest in a subject, no aptitude for it and who can't see its relevance to their futures to endure lessons in it. They gain nothing and often impact the learning of others, requiring teachers to waste time trying and failing to engage them.

That may well be it. I have a mental image now of History teachers up and down the country complaining about the mess the new Brick laying teacher leaves in their now shared classroom.

We had near to full employment from 1997 to 2010. Unemployment rates were at a record low.

Record low unemployment rates were actually in 2019!!

Debt DOES matter! It's risen to 3 TRILLION and the interest alone is costing over 100 BILLION per year (more than the education budget). We can't pretend it doesn't matter. We've had 2 or 3 decades of politicians thinking like you that debt doesn't matter and look where it's got us.

You might want to think about that - 2019 is nine years later than 2010!
