I have just seen this on the news. The building and meeting with some regional mayors.

Is this a good move or a gimmick?

I want to be positive but I am not sure 🤔

I would like somebody to explain how moving staff moves power.

He flew up there today in a private jet.

There's a train that takes 2 hours he could have been on. By the time he got out to Heathrow and back into Manchester from the airport, he can't have saved any time and the carbon footprint was outrageous.

Ridiculous symbolic twaddle of an idea. Happiest day of his life? His poor wife and kids 🤦‍♀️

We are a country the size of a postage stamp! - its a gimmick to appease a certain cohort up north who have a chip about London.

Just to say, first thing, I can see why he can't get on a train - or why the UK Prime Minister can't get on the train

Second thing, I understand that we use jets that belong to other others and they would've flown into an airfield not Heathrow

I do think it's ridiculous, and he doesn't need to do any of this in the first place. I think it's reasonable to say the job is based at 10 Downing Street SW1 and those who can't accept that need not apply

I do worry slightly that there is something more sinister behind it especially as it seems to be happening very quickly so it's been planned for ages.

He really does need to ditch this net zero shit if he's going to do this regularly. I'm wondering how much it costs.

Just to be clear. He was in Glasgow so flew from there - but yes the train would be fine.

He's my new neighbour, my office is round the corner. There was a huge police presence in the city today, and lots of people waiting to catch a glimpse of our new PM (not sure why, it's not like he's never been in Manchester before).

I'm not sure what to think of it really, might be a bit of a gimmick or it might bring some good things to more parts of the UK. I'll reserve judgement for now.

Honestly he’s a good spokesperson.

I listened to his speech and was like yeah! No 10 north. Great idea.

Went on holiday for 2 weeks and had a digital/ uk news blackout. Read a book. Reality returned and it dawned on me it’s a completely stupid idea.

And so we had a family convo on holiday. And my in-laws pointed out quite right that the north isn’t forgotten. Northern powerhouse, Sheff, Manc, Leeds, Liverpool etc. Burnhams whole pitch is that he’s the man for the job because he’s turned manc into a modern day utopia. The in-laws pointed out it’s actually the midlands which is forgotten. Most people don’t even know where it is 😂

So yeah. Nonsense. Just an excuse to do even less work.

What about all the other areas that aren’t our capital city? Maybe we need a No10 South West or a No10 North East?? My family roots are in Lancashire but still- what’s so special about the north west??

Apparently the office he's in is a GCHQ building. I live in a city which has a branch of the Cabinet Office in it, so there are already bits of the government all over the country. Yes it's a good thing that if people want to work in the government they shouldn't all have to be in London, but they already don't. There are bits of the Civil Service all over the country, and if they want to work with politicians, they are based all over the country too, in their constituencies. And Manchester is already a large economy. It's not 'forgotten' at all.

For obvious security reasons he isn't going to travel commercially. No other world leader does, and also they tavel with lots of people, civil servants, special advisors, government ministers etc so it does full up the plane generally and is safer and quicker.

In the event of any major crisis the plane is equipped so the PM can make key decisions from there and they travel with a lot of necessary security, even if he wanted to his security team wouldn't approve a commercial flight. It adds a lot more risk and disruption to those flying on that commercial plane as they'd have even more security (and likely having to get their early) if he did that.

You can debate N10 North etc but its ridiculous to complain over a normal travel arrangement for PMs or Presidents.

Burnham buzz word is : reprioritization. So that means the fare cap, and the VAT on electricity, are coming from money that was set aside by the Starmer government to help poorer countries with environmentally friendly projects. Instead, Burnham will make them take out loans .....

I don't think it should cost much. The Manchester office is based in existing government accommodation, and I understand it is being funded from existing Cabinet Office budgets. And arguably it could help stimulate investment, productivity and employment outside London,

Also, last time we had a £2 bus fare cap, bus travel outside London increased by 13% so the bus companies didn't do too badly from it - and for people in low-paid jobs it was a considerable saving on their commute.

It doesn’t cost much it’s already in the budget. He’s done quite well considering he’s been in 4 days, it’s nice to actually see a normal person as PM. Anyone seen his DJ sets?
