Gorton and Denton, what have you done?

You have elected as an MP to stand in the UK&NI parliament a person who said in a panel interview with Annabel Tiffin from BBC Northwest Tonight that the Manchester Arena bombing was caused by people sewing division by questioning immigration.

That statement is so outrageous I don't even know where to start.

AAAAGH. It's a geographic term*!

Great Britain is the island. So named because it's bigger than "little" Britain, which is Brittany.

Can people please go and read a child's geography textbook. They are actually pretty interesting. Thank you.

Anyway as I said on the other thread by-elections throw up weird results, often because of low turnout (like here) and the media get all frenzied over a non-story.

The turnout was 0.3% lower than the last GE. So low numbers-wise, but not for this constituency.

Yes, well I imagine Hannah Spencer would have been endorsed by Osama Bin Laden and Salman Abedi if they'd been alive. And?

You are supposed to be judging the candidate and their policies, not the people who might support them purely because they serve part of some wider agenda. Do you honestly think many of the Muslim population of Gorton and Denton give even the tiniest shiny shit about any of the Greens' policies beyond their stance on Palestine? I saw on the news a Muslim man of about 40 being interviewed in his fried chicken shop and he said 'I've never actually bothered to vote before, but I made sure I came out and voted Green this time and I'm delighted Hannah Spencer has won.'

Something tells me it wasn't carbon footprints or trans rights that inspired him to do so.

You'd imagine that Goodwin would have rejected Yaxley-Lennon's endorsement if he didn't agree with his racist views.

No?

MrsBadEnoch · 28/02/2026 17:54

People have different priorities in a by-election.

often because of low turnout (like here)
It wasn't particularly low.

I've only heard the BBC's report and it's seemed biased.

I think if you consider the absolute hatred Muslims get just for being Muslim, the verbal, physical and online abuse they receive simply for daring to exist then we should honestly be concerned about young people being radicalised. I think back to the lovely young Muslim boy in my school who was verbally abused/punched/spat on and bullied so horrifically that Im not sure that (unlike him) I’d have become a functional and useful member of society. I think I’d have in some way been very easily manipulated into believing that the people who bullied me deserved retaliation. If we don’t treat people with dignity because of their beliefs or let’s be honest, skin colour, then we are going to suffer the consequences of easily radicalised people seeking revenge.
If we treat people respectfully and not with hatred because they’re not white, then we have less risk of kids being manipulated into radicalisation.
I can’t believe this is a controversial take, if you make life shit for people who simply want to exist, if they’re bullied and shunned from society for being different, then it ends badly.

A young butcher from a halal butcher on tiktok is doing the absolute most to prove how well his family have integrated into society. They are kind, charitable, celebrate Christmas, couldn’t do more to be decent society members. The abuse he gets from plebends that haven’t ever given anything to society but dealt weed to teenagers is shocking.

Maybe Britain needs more love and acceptance and less division to combat the current shit show.
I’ve voted green on and off since I turned 18, loved Caroline Lucas and I love Zach. Let’s be real, most people are politically homeless.

We have been dragged into wars/CoL/NHS failure. Why not try a different approach? I’d rather be taxed highly and have services I can use. I’d rather housing wasn’t a fucking luxury. Food and heat weren’t. Im sorry if your taxes are going to rise, but ultimately, like is said of the working classes also, you’ve had it too good for to long.

This!!!

Denton and Gorton have done nothing but protect their diverse neighbourhoods and communities from hate, racism and discrimination. Good for them, looking forward to the hope spreading.

It is a disgusting comment and one they should apologise for but as of yet havent

I live in this constituency and it makes me sick to my teeth what she did to grr elected, not to mention the family voting which I witnessed and was not dealt with, yet my wife and I went to the same booth and were pulled up immediately.

my only hope it when these green lot get analysed further they fall apart as they are dangerous. Plus our new MP is apparently a millionaire so I wonder if she will donate her MPs salary to charity like a few others do.

Out of interest why did you and your wife go to the same booth?

What other British isles would those be?

You know, I'm happy to cater to the thick, but this takes the bloody biscuit. The British Isles is an archipelago of some 6000 islands. The term "British" in this context refers only to a geographical location, it doesn't denote ownership or sovereignty. Hence, the island of Ireland is a British Isle, despite including a country that is not part of the UK. You absolute ignoramus.

So the polling station staff intervened when you and your wife were engaged in family voting but did nothing when others were doing the same? I find that hard to believe to be honest. If you witnessed family voting (apart from your own) whilst in the polling station, why didn’t you raise it with polling staff discretely?

The Romans, during occupation, referred to England/Wales as Britannia, though Wales was sometimes named as Cambria. Northern (Scotland) was named Caledonia and the island of Ireland was named Hibernia.

Happy to help. Have a lovely evening.

Goodwin was endorsed by Tommy Robinson.

im just not sure what will happen. Labour are ridiculous and all about a few working people paying g for everyone else. Reform is a bit too right for me. I’m thinking Kemi and the conservatives might be worth another try

No way they are in training to be Reform

Marieb19 · 28/02/2026 18:28

I find them terrifying.
Legalising drugs - how do you shut down the crack house that's started operating next door.
Open borders - they've said they would give them all a house (whose) and we have 9 million already unemployed.
Net Zero brought forward 10 years, banning nuclear power. Yes im terrified. We won't have an economy left.

Men in women's changing rooms?

Please stop all the hatred. Times change, yes we have to find solutions to things like changing rooms. You may change your mind if you have kids, because they may be one of these men. Let's do things with dignity and kindness. Great in Britain is used as a measure of land mass. Reform are bigots and misogynistic......Handmaids Tale......

My feeling about the greens policies are that most of them are good, as in they come from a place of ethics and morality, a focus on the environment and the people, a focus on moving closer to Europe, offer a welcome change. I don’t agree with everything- I don’t want self identification of men saying they are women, but this is one issue and as we know policies do get u turned or adapted in a way to best suit the feeling of the country.

I haven’t read anything about ‘open borders’ but do agree with them that we need a better way to handle migration than what is happening now- I have no problem at all with skilled ‘outsiders’ living in this country and working here and contributing to our economy, and the systems in place to support that properly.

I also like how they would stop the first past the post voting system we have and make sure the NHS and education improves.

I don’t see how greens are crazy for actually being decent human beings and wanting to put people’s needs and the environment first???

The Greens want completely open borders. They're totally bonkers!

Ohyeahitsme · 28/02/2026 18:33

Imdunfer · 28/02/2026 09:35

Nobody is denying Muslims agency. It’s common sense. I had a Jewish gran who left her community for a non Jewish husband. My mother wasn’t raised Jewish but traditionally would be classed as Jewish as would I, even though we haven’t ever practiced any religion. My gran could speak Hebrew although I never heard her. I have her maiden name as she double barrelled hers, to keep her Jewish heritage and my mother and I still have that surname. I have once had one antisemitic comment online (Facebook. Home of the intellectually challenged) and that was quite hurtful. I can’t imagine how I’d feel day in and day out being abused for my heritage. Muslims face that daily, so no it’s not denying them agency. It’s recognising that abuse will whittle down anybody and make them easy to manipulate and radicalise.
Young people are prone to terrible choices when dealing with feeling of being unwanted. Look at school shooters, incels who shoot women, none of these people are feeling included in society. Children from chaotic backgrounds are easier to groom, drug dealers generally arent targeting middle class kids from happy families with no money worries to be grafting on the streets. Young People who are vulnerable to manipulation aren't stupid, they’re simply the right target.

I have no feelings that Muslims are thick, or have no agency, some of the most intelligent and well educated people I’ve ever met have been Muslim. A Muslim consultant saved my life. A Muslim surgeon delivered my baby via emergency caesarean. I do however believe any group of people who experience hatred on the scale Muslims do are hugely vulnerable to radicalisation.

Islamism was not developed in the UK, however racist you want to believe we are. It was developed by Muslims, for their own reasons. It exists in Muslim countries, It has taken over Muslim countries.

Jew hatred was not developed in the UK no matter how racist you want to believe we are. Muslims who are anti-Semitic (and clearly not all are), including murderously anti-Semitic, have their own responsibility for that. It comes from their own Muslim self-identity and beliefs.

We don't see epidemics of other social groups who suffer racism going on these terrorist sprees. We don't have a problem with poor white people engaging in these levels of terrorism, despite white people being the majority population, and the appalling prejudice they have faced, especially from the Left and especially since Brexit. The vast majority of those on the terror list are Muslims, despite them not being the majority population.

You are lying to yourself to political reasons when you try to pretend the problem with Muslim terrorism is white people's racism. And its frankly disgustingly offensive to Jewish people to try to blame their murder by Muslims on the poor Muslim people being subjected to racism, (regardless of who your Gran is). Stop making the (murderous) aggressor the victim, simply because they are brown.

That Green MPs victory speech was one of vilest things I have ever heard. Elected in Manchester and pleading for us to remember the humanity of Muslims when it is Jews who are being murdered for being Jewish in Manchester, not Muslims for being Muslim. But clearly, you are of the same mindset. Muslims must always be the victims to you, even when the racist murderers are Muslims, and their victims, chosen for their race and religion, are not.

And you can't make a claim that you do think Muslims have agency and then write an entire post again absolving them of responsibility, in denial of the facts.

Highmole · 28/02/2026 18:43

And, @BrendaThePoodle if you want to look at racism and hatred look at the British Jewish community and the shit they have always have. Mosques don't need security guards and neither do muslim schools. But British Jews have not gone on terrorist sprees because of the racism they face.

Muslim terrorism is born from Muslim communities. No one else is responsible for it but Islamists.

Someone might remind you of that when women’s rights are completely destroyed, prostitution as a valid career choice is introduced in schools and the world and its wife can legally buy their Ketamine from the local corner shop.
