Who might the Democrats field for Presidential Election 2028? Will they win?

Just wondering about this. I don't see anyone obvious emerging yet, do you? Shouldn't the Democrats be out there with their likely candidate(s) NOW, in opposition to Trump and the Republicans. Maybe it's too early yet. But I think it's getting late!

What do you think? Is anyone obvious to you...

Mark Kelly?

Zonder · 22/01/2026 20:20

Goodness knows but I wish there was someone who could rally the sensible vote.

Neolara · 22/01/2026 20:21

Gavin Newsome?

oscalo · 22/01/2026 20:31

Mark Kelly is impressive alright, and a straight talker. I have to admit that I was following his SM stuff very idly for a while last year, without realising he's married to Gabby Giffords who survived being shot in the head at a rally.

Newsom is polished and very articulate, and he will also appeal to a certain audience, however California is (I think) seen as an "independent Blue republic" by many, so who knows? Still he has the backing of many prominent Democrats, including Obama so it could work out for him.

My views are just my own, and TBH I haven't really given likely candidates much thought yet. So that's where you come in to give some names, then I'll look them up!

Would love to know this!

Zonder · 22/01/2026 20:41

I think Newsom would be too controversial. They need someone that centrists (by US standards) could vote for.

timbitstimbytes · 22/01/2026 20:43

I think Josh Shapiro, he is a little more centrist candidate and has made good inroads in PA on fentanyl. I think this is a much higher priority for Americans than the press gives it credit for, I don't think I have met anyone from the US who hasn't had a brush with it in their families. Highly articulate and personable too.

Neolara · 22/01/2026 20:21

Gavin Newsome?

Do you mean "Sparkle Ken Doll" ? 😂😂😂😂(AKA Sparkle Beach Ken Barbie Doll ) - he does not look real! Trump calls him "Slimy Newscum" !!

oscalo · 24/01/2026 18:06

Newsom is Governor of the Independent Republic of California too. Not many MAGA hats to sway there I reckon.

Need someone who is kind of ordinary but clever, articulate and appeals to both sides. Well I know s/he (definitely a HE this time) will be a Dem, but someone who will speak for everyone. Tall order I know. Still stumped, but I admire Senator Kelly who got a death threat from Trump, I think he was told to hang himself or something.

I'm looking at Shapiro now. Need to see a bit more of him on SM and listen to him.

Anyone else spring to mind for anyone? What about the recently elected NY mayor Mamdani? He is being written off by many for his "Democratic Socialist" leanings. I can't see a swing that far to the Left, although the Left in the US is probably far right here.

As he has stepped down from running for Minnesota governor again (3rd time) and has lots of time on his hands, maybe Tim Waltz would like to have go at being the presidential candidate this time? But I suppose it will depend if he is charged in the 9 billion Minnesota fraud scandal.... he seemed not to have noticed all the hundreds of fraud crimes being committed right under his nose for 4 years or more - shame that Nick Shirley produced that YouTube video on Minnesota’s billion-dollar fraud scandal

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 24/01/2026 18:14

I think Pete Buttigieg is good. I doubt he'd win though because he's gay. Which shouldn't be an issue but this is America...

There are still some fools who think Kamala Harris should run again. Probably including Kamala herself...!

Edited

Yes including Kamala Harris herself. She told BBC in October 2025 'I am not done' and that she was confident there will be a woman in the White House in future.so she may run for president again in 2028!

timbitstimbytes · 24/01/2026 22:38

If you are able to catch him on Bill Maher Real Time he comes across very well. I think the difference between him and Newsom is that he's getting things done in PA, whereas all of the right wing media in the US tend to rip California to pieces, from the mismanagement of the fires in the Palisades to overspending on High speed rail.

Mamdani, Walz and AOC are already far too polarising for the flyover states. Walz in particular has the taint of Kamala and the Minnesota fraud which won't bring back any voters who have defected to the Republican Party. The Democrats I know who I know were debating voted for Trump this time, police officers, teachers would likely defect permanently if any of those three were put up, they know they are laughing stocks for Republicans. Shapiro at least has good union relationships in PA. The one thing that might hold him back though is that he's Jewish although I hope that won't be the case. Someone has already tried to assassinate him.

Kelly, I didn't know much about him, but it was just as awful that his wife had an attempted assassination against her, she nearly died, she was also Jewish. The fact he is a veteran will give him a lot of credibility and he seems like a strategic operator reading about him.

Happyher · 24/01/2026 22:41

I think Newsome is very much pushing himself forward for this at the moment. If Trump succeeds in changing the constitution so he can serve a third term then so can Obama

Yes, this is really worrying me.

I've been thinking that one Democratic stupidity is that Biden made no effort to showcase other Dems. Obama didn't either.

I can think of a few people who might be decent candidates (NOT Kamala Harris), but the only one who seems to have had an impact on public consciousness is Gavin Newsom, governor of California. I have to say, for me, the best qualified person is still Hillary Clinton.

The Clinton's have refused to answer a subpoena relating to the Epstein files.
They did not appear to the committee and may face charges because of this.
Steve Bannon was jailed for the same thing during Biden's term in office.

The two things aren't remotely comparable, just like Trump's refusal to hand over documents isn't remotely comparable to Biden having some documents in his garage.

snowbear22 · 24/01/2026 23:26

Why what is the difference in the two cases?

soddingspiderseason · 25/01/2026 23:19

Gavin Newsome seems intelligent, is articulate, funny and has a backbone. He gets under Trump’s skin by mocking his utterly ridiculous social media messages, whilst also speaking out and standing up for what’s right. I’d like Obama back though. Trump would literally implode, and the US would have a decent man at the helm again.

TheAutumnCrow · 25/01/2026 23:25

Not that I have a vote there, but I’d be interested in a Mark Kelly / VP Obama ticket.

LilacOpal · 27/01/2026 06:42

Maybe Josh Shapiro... or AOC if they really decide to get radical. They need to go young and energetic if Vance will be leading the ticket on the right.

I hope to God Newsom doesn't try to run -- though he's obviously setting himself up for that. As a Californian, I'd say his performance as governor has left a lot to be desired. He is viewed by many as the archetypical slimy politician. His presence in the race would be more of a hindrance than a help.

SheilaFentiman · 27/01/2026 06:49

Re AOC - unfortunately, I think it would be a mistake for the Democrats to select a female candidate again

oscalo · 27/01/2026 11:01

I know this might sound bad, but whatever about the merits and charisma (or whatever characteristics apply) of GN, I can't warm to him. Not that it matters a bit, I don't have a vote! But my slightly cynical mind sees him as over polished, botoxed, and typical tanned Californian superman without much substance, just my view and sorry if that offends anyone. I wonder, despite his credentials, would Americans ignore that, admire him for that, or dismiss him?

I'm really warming to Mark Kelly. I like Buttigieg a lot, but I think he will be annihilated by the anti LGBT crowd somehow or other. I need to check out Shapiro a bit more. He could be the dark horse!

Sad isn't it, that women are being dismissed from the ticket no matter what side they are on.

As they say "timing" is everything. The Dems better get a move on quick!

Gavin Newsom

Oh please lord, no. He's right up Prince Harry's arse, isn't he? Which to me shows appalling judgement.
