Cantonet · 06/01/2026 10:50

Will anyone stop him?
What will Nato do?
What will Denmark do?
Are there plans in motion to stop this other than friendly diplomacy & gentle words?

I don't think he will take it over, he's just using the threat to secure a deal on other proposals that he will make to them.

I understand why the US wants Greenland.

I cant work out if they hope to end nato at the same time as gaining Greenland or if its all a bluff to just have all more bases on Greenland within nato.

I know they arent keen on funding nato but do they actually want it to collapse

He wants its resources eg. oil, gas, lithium and anything else he can get his greedy hands on. Remember he is a business man through and through. Venezuela is not about Cartels and Drugs, its about gaining more land for improving the infrastructure again to extract more oil for US companies.

Buying a country is just … nuts! Plus Greenland is not for fucking sale.

I dunno if it is nuts. USA purchased Lousiana from France and Alaska from Russia etc.
US Virgin islands used to be called Danish virgin islands befire they sold the island to USA. Denmark also sold their Indian colonies to Great Britain. If anything Denmark has form of selling their overseas territories. And USA has offered to buy Denmark since the 1860's

Yes, it was long time ago and world has changed and it isn't comparable to 2026. But I thought it was quite interesting and made me stop and think for a sec.

Europe and Australia are the US’s only ‘true’ allies. China wouldn’t piss on them if they were on fire; nor would Russia.

I find myself very disappointed in how successfully Europe and Ukraine have been painted as ‘the enemy’ among the American public. Hearing JD Vance call us ‘some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 40 years’ (WTF was Iraq/Afghanistan then?) was just insulting.

I think it’s time to rejoin the EU but I know nobody is ready for that conversation

I suspect half of the country are on the same page, however I don't think we need to officially rejoin as much as make it clear we are there to bat for them if it comes to it.

The press in both US and UK (think a headline yesterday was about Starmer's Brexit Betrayal) are pushing the conservative narrative but the gen pop are generally more clued up than they were in the 80s/90s and know what is going on. I am sure most Americans are wondering what they hell their country has become.

i think that time is very rapidly approaching & given the urgency of the situation, it could happen quickly... shd the US use force and or abandon Ukraine.

Barely believable if it's really true.......Is it true, will he just go there and take it, in the 21st century ? Don't congress have any power to stop yet another mad man ? Mad yes, but still very very cool, even at his advanced age ?!

Cool?
FFS 🙄

Farage pushing for us to leave the EU was part of the plan.

He is a Russian/US puppet and is part of the plan.

if we actually had to use them, then before we did activate all our bunkers, for the leaders etc and then when the ash settles, we begin rebuilding, humanity overall will survive it will just alter the global order.

Jesus fucking wept.

At least we have autonomy over decisions regarding our national security and can be made into law quickly without the other 27 EU member states with their own political agendas stalling any decisions. Swings and roundabouts as they say!

anotherside · 07/01/2026 10:17

Orangemintcream · 06/01/2026 12:17

I’m not sure there’s a lot anyone could do about it. Unfortunately the USA has one of the largest most powerful technologically advanced military forces in the world.

They know they ca do what they like. It would be a gift to Putin if NATO countries start fighting each other.

Honestly it might start WW3 - or he might get away with it and just get a firm telling off.

Edited

Plenty they could do, just not militarily. Boycott the coming World Cup for a start. I’m sure people will love watching it without England, Netherlands, France & Germany etc

^ This. Before we know it we'll join Venezuela and Greenland (if nobody stops Trump) in the status of US Colony. The UK is a perfect launch pad for Europe, add the cheap labour market, where workers rights can easily be demolished and all the greedy US companies are onto a winner.

Cantonet · 07/01/2026 10:51

Apparently 10 C17 globemásters have arrived at one of the RAF bases in the UK. Also ghostriders ( popularised in black hawk down) have also arrived at another base. So whatever they will be used for surely Starmer is complicit in this?

What wound those decisions be, with our tiny army, lack of modern equipment and woeful budget?

There’s diamonds and other precious stones in Greenland as well as the lithium and cobalt etc.

it’s a nightmare extracting anything there, few have the expertise, theres also a limited time to get people in and to start work due to the fact theres only two seasons.

Venezuela has one of the largest oil reserves.

David Attenborough was predicting wars over shipping and mining 15+ years ago. Weve slept walked into it

Nope. Between Putin and trump it will give license for anyone to take any country

JoyintheMorning · 07/01/2026 11:10

Someone said that we choose EU as allies.
What nonsense, The EU will never help us. When we were members they combined to defeat us at every vote in the Parliament.
At the time of the Falklands invasion by Argentina, there was no help. France continues sending supplies to keep the Super Etendarde aircraft attacking our ships and troops, France continued training pilots for Argentina and supplying Exocet missiles.
The French have led the EU campaign against our food going to the EU. The Eu claims that the fish from thousands of square miles of our seas should be theirs. I would not like to rely on EU support for anything military.

It’s a lot of whataboutery over nothing. There has been absolutely no indication that Trump is going to invade Greenland fgs. Smoke and mirrors comes to mind…..

Really? Do you watch the news? Confused

SpidersAreShitheads · 07/01/2026 11:15

Livelovebehappy · 07/01/2026 09:11

The reactions on this thread illustrate exactly the point that people use a situation and start to catastrophise and whataboutery. People on here are now suggesting other countries potentially in line for being invaded by America. It’s bonkers! This is how rumours and fiction turning into fact start to grow legs in the media.

I’m going to assume you’re a Trump fan, given your multiple comments on this thread scoffing at the notion that he’s going to invade anywhere else.

You really do need to go and have a gander at the news. Trump and his gang are openly going after Greenland. They have said that it’s essential for their strategic operations and won’t rule out using military force if Denmark refuse to hand it over.

He’s making oblique threats to other countries too. Columbia seems to be next in line although it’s not clear if it’s just hot air. Trump has said the country is run by a “sick man who makes cocaine and likes selling it to the US” but warned he “wouldn’t be doing it for very long”. He was asked whether he would carry out military action similar to Venezuela and Trump said “sounds good to me”. He may well just be posturing and have no actual intentions but he’s also made similar threats to Mexico and Cuba too.

In a nutshell, Trump is already making concrete moves to take Greenland one way or another. It’s a threat that’s being taken seriously by Denmark, Greenland, and Europe. It’s less clear what his plans are for Columbus, Mexico, and Cuba, but he’s making threats towards them too.

Oh, and he’s also threatening to bomb Iran again too.

None of this is being conjured up by “Trump haters”. It’s what him and his team have said directly on camera.

There are plenty of Trump supporters who are now saying “this isn’t what we voted for” - he ran on a promise not to start any new wars and pre-election he said ideally the military wouldn’t ever have to be used. Trump has always been very critical of interventionist policies - and yet here we are.

Europe might turn against the US..

You must be very young....

US saved Europe from the Nazis. (My parents went through it).

Anyway, this is about Greenland. Trump is scary and off his rocker

Never forget that it was essentially the Russians that defeated the Nazis
The USA could not have done it without the Russians.
Know your history.

ShesTheAlbatross · 06/01/2026 21:27

In fairness to Starmer, and any other leader, the world is not equipped for the US deciding their new foreign policy is “we’ll have what we want and fuck you”.

What is anyone going to do?
Negotiate? With lunatics like Miller around that isn’t likely.
Fight? Well we bought a lot of our military equipment from them and they have kill switches for some of it, as the first comment on the thread alluded to.
Sanctions? What would they care about, that wouldn’t also massively hurt the world economy?

We could take his Scottish golf course I suppose.

Maybe if we stop granting him state visits to the UK to start with. Just inflates his ego.

And if you listen to the bbc podcast Trumped you will learn he got those golf courses through deception, lies and years of intimidation tactics and violence towards the locals whilst demonstrating a lack of knowledge of Scottish history he claims to be hot on. He also did not have the funds to see the project through. He is just a conman.

I understand the why he wants it.
I still cant quite get why nato is of no use to him. He can have bases and minerals without taking it over.
I dont think the us companies need the oil in Venezuel. I think they need China not to have it and it not to be sold in other currencies than usd.
