too little too late. As a full time worker I can’t afford to run a car, let alone a luxury car. Motability should be a standard car - available in automatic and manual, an option for wheelchair users, and that’s it.

Luxury cars removed from Motability scheme ahead of budget

The programme has been criticised for allowing people with non-visible disabilities to get luxury vehicles as part of their welfare. The chancellor wants to support the British car market with the new measures.

I think it perhaps sends the wrong ‘message’, in the prevailing environment.

What wrong 'message' is that?

Well, the chancellor brought this in and is ‘expected to press ahead with scrapping about £300m in tax breaks for the Motability scheme’, tomorrow.

Yes, yes, next.

You know, it just looks, wrong - when the chancellor is about to hit a lot of people with tax rises.

No, I feel right in my assessment, and have no plans to change my mind, thank you.

I will leave it there.

Are non-disabled people driving BMWs/Mercedes giving the 'wrong message"?

It looks wrong when a disabled person drives a luxury car? Because of tax rises?

Probably fort he best to leave it there

The longer I spend on this thread the more I think yes, that’s exactly what people think.

perhaps they would like disabled people to just stay indoors, completely out of sight 😞

If they aren't being funded by benefits they can drive what they like

But we need to look at all benefits and really scrutinise them

It's not ok that wealthy pensioners get WFA either. All benefits need to be means tested.

Why should I pay tax, when working full time with a disability (leaving me with no quality of life outside of work) to fund benefits for people who are wealthier than me ?

You have twisted my words.

It looks wrong to have premium marques subsidised by the taxpayer, yes.

Why would anyone want disabled people to stay indoors, out of sight?

That’s disturbing, and very very wrong.

They're not

For those saying adapted cars only - I don't need an adapted car. If I ever get to drive again (we selected our motability car when it looked like I'd be driving again within six months; that was nearly 3 years ago and no progress yet!) I need a car with autonomous emergency braking (the newer and more advanced the system, the better), lane departure warning (and ideally, lane keep assist), and the best safety features possible. Those features aren't adaptations; they're features - generally of the newest cars, which I couldn't afford in a million years without motability.

We recently bought a 5y old VW ID with all these little extras. £16000.- 28k on the clock. Bonus is that it's electric and literally costs a few pounds to charge.
Just a bit of food for thought...

Who does it look wrong to? How would you even know?

I'll tut and sigh at any BMW or Mercedes I see tomorrow for you. Just in case there's a disabled person in there. No need to thank me 🙏

Ah, in which case, no problem - I thought they were. Then, yes of course, they should be able to drive whatever is on offer.

Why did the provider withdraw them, then? Serious Q.

Where am I supposed to get £16000 from 🤣

You're not.

If you have a disability yourself, you are almost certainly not a net contributer and cost more than the tax you pay.

But why?

A premium marquess car cost the tax payer the same as a lesser one.

So optics?

Can't work but I have £16000 hanging around in my back pocket to buy a car, obviously 🤣

Wouldn't that mean you'd potentially be eligible for PIP yourself if your disability leaves you with no quality of life?

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 25/11/2025 21:48

One less benefits bashing thread, hurray

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 25/11/2025 21:48
