Luxury cars removed from the motability scheme

too little too late. As a full time worker I can’t afford to run a car, let alone a luxury car. Motability should be a standard car - available in automatic and manual, an option for wheelchair users, and that’s it.

Luxury cars removed from Motability scheme ahead of budget

The programme has been criticised for allowing people with non-visible disabilities to get luxury vehicles as part of their welfare. The chancellor wants to support the British car market with the new measures.

I don’t need to ‘justify’ it. He can’t walk, he gets motability. It’s as simple as that.

How would you like that justified?

As in. He can get around in a car we bought ourselves, not scrounged off the government because that car wasn’t fancy enough?
That’s what I mean.

AutumnLeavesandKnittedJumpers · 25/11/2025 17:46

Nope. Sick of taxpayers being bled dry for shit like a Merc.

But the taxpayer isn’t bled dry for a Merc.

The PIP payment is the same regardless of the car you lease.

Some people pay more for another model from their own pockets.

Why are you finding this so hard to understand?

Kirbert2 · 25/11/2025 18:04

Snowonground · 25/11/2025 17:58

It's more free (well, taxpayer funded) stuff? Why are you quibbling about the colour?!

Because there's no need for Motability cars to be identifiable.

Snowonground · 25/11/2025 18:04

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 25/11/2025 18:01

Why do you want motability cars to be easily identifiable by colour and therefore a target for vandalism and abuse? Will that make you feel better?

Unfortunately the golden goose is in the process of being killed by Rachel Reeves, partly due to the vast welfare Bill which does include uplifts for luxury cars and a choice of colour. If this continues (which the Budget shows all the signs of doing) soon there wont be any Motability at all.

You're missing the point. They shouldn't have been giving out luxury cars AT ALL!!! If you require a car because you are disabled there should be basic cars available - nothing fancy or flash or luxurious - just safe and reliable and inexpensive. There are plenty of cars that fit that description.

Anything to bash the less able into place eh.

Mysticmaud · 25/11/2025 18:05

'Beauty is always noticed, ordinary is not'.

How many of these luxury cars were actually chosen?
Most disabled people drive suvs and small easy to park cars. WAV of course if needed.
People see a fancy car and think, ooh how do they afford that. Good luck to them if the can get down in the low sporty seats, I can't as a twelve pointer. As I said up thread it could be due to compensation for disability but that's rare. Would @AutumnLeavesandKnittedJumpers deny a veteran a sports car with his loss of limb payment?
Genuinely disabled people have told the OP why they need to access the scheme. Most people with pots of money will buy on lease and pay the balance at the end of three years. You can't do that on mobility. Your deposit is lost.
Insurance is in the down payment not a tax break. If we start withdrawing cars we will effect the car makers and workers.
Let me confidently tell the OP that very few families escape ill health. My illness is genetic not self inflicted. I had no issues until two years ago. Most days I feel like shooting myself so that would save a bob or two!

Yes. Yes, it would. A view that’s expressed on lots of threads like these - started by people who have no clue as to what disability means, and even less idea of what the Motability scheme was designed for. It’s just another nasty benefit bashing thread.

You're doing this on purpose now.

I think at this point this person is not posting in good faith. 800 odd posts, many explaining how the system works and yet they still can't grasp it.

That’s what I mean.

But we can’t, I had to give up work to become his carer. £330 a month but that’s another story.

As I said, his lovely sister paid our extra payment. Do you suggest she pays for our whole car?

I dont think it will be affordable anyway for much longer sadly. So its all a bit of a moot point what colour these cars are.

Zeborah · 25/11/2025 18:06

Yes indeed, how bloody dare they!

Unfortunately the golden goose is in the process of being killed by Rachel Reeves, partly due to the vast welfare Bill which does include uplifts for luxury cars and a choice of colour. If this continues (which the Budget shows all the signs of doing) soon there wont be any Motability at all.

And if that happens the economy will be further affected. Motability has been a major factor in keeping the UK car industry going.

Nice deflection, but you didn't answer my question. Why would you like motability cars to be identical and therefore identifiable and targetable?

let me guess, I hate disabled people.

Do you?

You don't seem to like them having expensive cars, even if they work their butts off.

Wilful misunderstanding to support a concept they couldn’t grasp in the first place ?

Jellycatspyjamas · 25/11/2025 18:12

Ponderingwindow · 25/11/2025 18:02

Did some of these “luxury” cars come with more recent safety features like 360 cameras and collision avoidance that are not available on basic models.

The fact that my car has a specific camera that lets me see if there are children in my blind spot and beeps it I still miss one as I am turning near the school is the reason I spent the extra money. The second I saw it I was sold.

if someone is disabled, I can see those extra features being especially valuable.

My DHs Aygo comes with both of those options, it’s hardly luxury level kit now.

I think the point is if you can find the extra for the upgrade you probably shouldnt be on benefits at all.

Anyway as I said its all a moot point. When "austerity" hits and we go bust there will be no cars for disabled people and their families. Or if there are they will be basic. We arent a country that can afford nice things any more. Just basic means tested cars.

Except if you'd read even one tenth of this thread, you'd realise that these uplifts for luxury and colour choices doesn't come from the welfare bill - only the HRA element of £77 per week comes from that.

Once more for those hard of reading MOTABILITY CARS AREN'T FUNDED FROM TAX PAYER's MONEY, THE ONLY COST TO THE WELFARE BUDGET IS THE HRA PAYMENT. You could argue there's a difference in the VAT take, but that's so insignificant in the grand scheme of things that it's a bit pointless quibbling about that. MOTABILIY IS A CHARITY WITH NO PUBLIC FUNDING.

Because god forbid someone disabled has anything ‘nice’!?

They are not ‘giving out’ cars, the disabled person is using the mobility element of their PIP payment and topping it up with extra and paying a large upfront cost for that ‘free’ car (and any adaptations).

There are many reasons why someone might want or need more than a basic car and frankly they’re none of our business.

Do you expect to justify how you spend child benefit, state pension or universal credit (or any other benefits) as well?

You’re being fed false information by people who either don’t know what they’re talking about - most politicians - or those who have a vested interest in putting a target on someone else’s back - the press.

I’m old enough to remember the blue three wheel invacars which were phased out when motability was introduced. They singled out and identified disabled drivers, as well as isolating them, as they were ingle seater. Motability was designed to integrate disabled people with other road users and take away the stigma. Interesting that so many mealy mouthed posters want to bring it back.

Once again, Mercedes do not feature on the currently available list of car brands available on the Motability website. Do have a look and let us know which make and models you object to.
