Luxury cars removed from the motability scheme

too little too late. As a full time worker I can’t afford to run a car, let alone a luxury car. Motability should be a standard car - available in automatic and manual, an option for wheelchair users, and that’s it.

Luxury cars removed from Motability scheme ahead of budget

The programme has been criticised for allowing people with non-visible disabilities to get luxury vehicles as part of their welfare. The chancellor wants to support the British car market with the new measures.

Nobody ‘deserves’ anything.
If you can afford a Mercedes -great -buy one and find it yourself.
If you can’t -simple transport system to get people to hospital appointments - much cheaper than providing a car for the rellies to use 95% of the time it isn’t needed for ‘appointments’

So I don't get to go anywhere except hospital appointments? Zero quality of life?

I suppose it saves the government more money if we're all offing ourselves because we aren't allowed to leave the house.

So disabled people should only have basic cars even if they can contribute an amount themselves.

No choice of colour either ! Did you know that’s even an option on motability. Totally unfair ! Just a basic car, one colour only , maybe we will call it ‘be grateful bleak’ a grey shade the colour of storm clouds.

DuncinToffee · 25/11/2025 17:39

Only able people work theit butts off?

It sounds a lot like envy to me. Maybe those people like to swap?

let me guess, I hate disabled people.

AutumnLeavesandKnittedJumpers · 25/11/2025 17:37

Then why are so many up in arms saying disabled people deserve this luxury?

They deserve the option. In practice the change will affect a very small amount of disabled people. Not every disabled person uses the scheme. Those that do don’t all use it for a car and luxury cars only make up around 6% of cars available.

But scrapping it has allowed us to witness the amount of posters who don’t see disabled people as fully human. As a myriad of different types of human. Some working. Some with savings. Some who may want to spend some money leasing a so called luxury car. Nope. They are all needy graspers who don’t now and never have made any contribution to society (not like those good old hard working people) and should be grateful for every little crumb they get.

I get pip and I agree. If you can afford the massive amount to lease a luxury car (with government subsidies) you can go without the subsidy and lease a standard car. The subsidy isn’t there to upgrade you from a mondeo /peugeot/renault to a Mercedes, it’s there to provide help to those who can’t afford a car. It’s taking the piss.

It’s not. It’s there to assist with the added expense of disability.

You don’t HAVE to spend the mobility part of your award on a car. You can just choose to. We had a lovely sister in law that gave us £3k to get the snazzier car. Our mobility amount is the same as every one else’s though.

What car we put it to is irrelevant.

Ooh "Benefits Beige"
"Scrounger Sky Blue"

Something that really lets everyone know that the person inside had the audacity to be disabled.

Alittlefrustrated · 25/11/2025 17:53

I can't begrudge disabled people a nice car, that they have to pay extra for, to be honest.

BoudiccaRuled · 25/11/2025 17:53

twolittles · 25/11/2025 09:42

Maybe go and look at the huge advance payments required for these type of cars - often awards to qualify aren’t for that long. You have to also give up your PIP mobility part each week for the scheme. So a huge non refundable advance payment and a weekly leasing charge. It’s not a free car . You sound jealous that disabled people had a choice.

But if they could afford a huge upfront payment then surely they could afford to pay for a cheaper car upfront, by themselves?
Just because someone is disabled doesn't mean they don't have a good salary. Why the fuck were taxpayers contributing to cars for people who could afford to buy their own?

BackToLurk · 25/11/2025 17:55

AutumnLeavesandKnittedJumpers · 25/11/2025 17:46

Nope. Sick of taxpayers being bled dry for shit like a Merc.

Oh yes. I forget. Disabled people also don’t pay tax.

Someone actually suggested something similar on a previous Motability thread.

One colour with I think something like a badge/sticker so everyone can see that it's a Motability car.

Tinnybinnylinny · 25/11/2025 17:56

zurigo · 25/11/2025 09:38

You're missing the point. They shouldn't have been giving out luxury cars AT ALL!!! If you require a car because you are disabled there should be basic cars available - nothing fancy or flash or luxurious - just safe and reliable and inexpensive. There are plenty of cars that fit that description.

But they were not giving out luxury cars, there was an initial payment to be made.

i guess though disabled people shouldn’t have a choice, right? How dare they.

Snowonground · 25/11/2025 17:56

This thread quibbling about luxury cars in view of the state of the economy and what's about to happen is insane. Talk about fiddling while Rome burns.

Oh god yes I forgot that.

Can't wait to get my big "THANK YOU TAXPAYER FOR MY FREE CAR" sticker, I'm sure it was something along those lines they wanted.

Well you’ve obviously justified it to yourself then. People are going to take what they can I suppose.

WorryWife · 25/11/2025 17:58

The cars are cheap not only because of vat, the manufacturers offer discounts as well, which makes the cars really attractive. With insurance and breakdown included as well at again discounted prices even more.

This is why the scheme should include all brands, especially that more expensive brands can offer better prices.

It is a good scheme, it is just that people don't understand it, it is under constant scrutiny and constant restrictions that not always make sense.

Rosscameasdoody · 25/11/2025 17:58

AutumnLeavesandKnittedJumpers · 25/11/2025 17:46

Nope. Sick of taxpayers being bled dry for shit like a Merc.

You’re talking shit. The Motability scheme is mostly funded by the charity. The cost to the tax payer is the mobility allowance which would be paid anyway and VAT exemption which is applied to all equipment/vehicles applied to disabled people who are severely afffected enough to quaiify - regardless of whether it’s through motability or privately purchased. The profit made by motability goes towards paying its employees and the cost of adaptations/specialist vehicles, so that disabled people can get out and about.

How does it feel to have started a thread that shows you to be a mealy mouthed ableist who hasn’t the first clue what disability actually means ?

BoudiccaRuled · 25/11/2025 17:53

Just because someone is disabled doesn't mean they don't have a good salary. Why the fuck were taxpayers contributing to cars for people who could afford to buy their own?

Because someone who has the enhanced mobility part of PIP is going to get the enhanced mobility part of PIP no matter what.

Even if they paid for a cheaper car upfront by themselves, that isn't going to take away the fact that they will still get the enhanced mobility part of PIP. It would just be cash instead of a car.

It's more free (well, taxpayer funded) stuff? Why are you quibbling about the colour?!

I don’t need to ‘justify’ it. He can’t walk, he gets motability. It’s as simple as that.

How would you like that justified?

Snowonground · 25/11/2025 17:58

Why do you want motability cars to be easily identifiable by colour and therefore a target for vandalism and abuse? Will that make you feel better?

AutisticAndMore · 25/11/2025 17:51

No it’s not bollocks just because you don’t agree with it. What exactly would her answer change? Absolutely nothing. It’s just pointless emotional blackmail. It gets us about as far as swearing at and insulting at people you disagree with and there’s been plenty of that on this thread. I am disabled btw.

Well no. Either she’d say “no I would not rather be disabled” which would be an acknowledgment that be disabled to the extent required to qualify for a Motability vehicle may not be the land of milk and honey she’s suggesting. Or she say “yes, I’d like to be sufficiently disabled to qualify” which we would be an ‘interesting’ position to examine.

Ponderingwindow · 25/11/2025 18:02

Did some of these “luxury” cars come with more recent safety features like 360 cameras and collision avoidance that are not available on basic models.

The fact that my car has a specific camera that lets me see if there are children in my blind spot and beeps it I still miss one as I am turning near the school is the reason I spent the extra money. The second I saw it I was sold.

if someone is disabled, I can see those extra features being especially valuable.

Rosscameasdoody · 25/11/2025 18:02

Snowonground · 25/11/2025 17:58

It's more free (well, taxpayer funded) stuff? Why are you quibbling about the colour?!

Because some posters want disabled drivers who have mobility cars to be clearly identifiable. Therefore opening them up to public abuse similar to the kind prevalent on this thread. Therefore opening them up publicly to the kind of opinion prevalent on this thread, which will inevitably lead to abuse.

If you can’t -simple transport system to get people to hospital appointments - much cheaper than providing a car for the rellies to use 95% of the time it isn’t needed for ‘appointments’

Except you can't just go and buy a modified Merc, try finding a company who will carry out those modifications.

I know plenty of people at my place of work who have Motability cars, plus a few of us who are blue badge disabled but don't qualify for Motability. We all use these cars to get to work, and nobody has "the rellies" using them 95% of the time because they are using theirs to commute to their tax paying jobs in social services. I wouldn't be able to work in my job without a car and neither would many of my colleagues due to the physical impossibility of commuting via public transport. So while I couldn't afford a Merc or something similar new, I use my car an awful lot more than just for hospital appointments. And none of my family drive my car - the only one living within 20 miles has her own which is much newer and nicer than mine.
