After days and days of negative press and chatter about income tax going up, complaints on Mumsnet and across the media, today’s reports are that idea might be dropped and now she’s being accused of rattling the markets and making the cost of borrowing increase.

Honestly, genuine question- what can she do?

And the majority of business in this country are SME + self employed.
Employers NI has already proven to have a negative impact.
Now they go after the self employed. Typical and obvious.
Every employer other than the state via public sector, is corrupt and must be attacked 🙄🙄 Ripe for taxing and fuck the impact on jobs/economy etc.

Its really scary. SMEs are responsible for 60% of UK Employment and 52% of income. These should be precious to the government rather than a focus of attack.

I saw Farage did a presentation about supporting the SMEs recently and he certainly seemed hugely supportive. He could at least articulate why they are important to the economy and sound credible unlike the actions of Labour. It will be interesting to see what the Reform policies will be as SME owners won't be able to vote Labour if she does go ahead with this. Or anyone employed in an SME (60% of the workforce).

We lost our AAA rating in 2013 - in the midst of austerity. No sooner had we got it back than we lost it again in 2016 - remember what happened that year?

Yes dear. I know the history. Im just commenting on the PP saying we have a AA rating as if that's a good thing. And that we will always be solvent. Whereas obviously a AA rating can go down too.

That’s madness. Entirely anti growth. Even pro Labour must have dc who want to work at some point. It would work against job creation, just ridiculous.

And also very bad for pensioners who rely on dividend income. Poor pensioners...Labour really hate them and their historically Conservative voting tendencies!! They are really getting beating.

They really would have problems if they go for SMEs in that way. The public sector won’t be immune when funding stalls either.

Not at all my dear. I assume a basic level of knowledge from posters and wouldn't be pompous enough to assume anyone didn't know about the loss of the triple AAA. The conservatives were in power for 14 years and I did say recent loss.

twistyizzy · 22/11/2025 12:17

On taxes: The UK has the biggest tax rate difference between top earners and average earners in the developed world.
The highest earners in the UK already pay disproportionately more tax than average workers, than in any other country.

So when people start shouting "tax the rich", they are already being!

Rachel Reeves can’t win, can she?

Before you set off on another one of your half-cocked rambles, Im referring to the worry that she is going to raise the basic rate of dividend tax from 8.25% to 20%. That's going to hit the self-employed very hard. If you understand how the majority of small incorporated business owners are paid.

This is not a pro business government that's for sure!

And we used to have a AAA rating not so very long ago so AA is nothing to be showing off about.

Edited

Ramblings? You ve literally made up policy on the hoof, you have no idea do you? so just make up an imaginary budget and state it as fact.

Legolava · 22/11/2025 13:51

But why are they all leaving…the reliance on higher earners is now imploding.

If they are stupid enough not to have it in an ISA wrap, which given its been 20k or 40k for couples for many years would be v surprising if they have not.

You do know what ISA wrap is don't you?

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 22/11/2025 14:22

Well, what an interesting discussion.

I’m convinced. Those few things that improve daily finances, like lower interest rates are all due to, and only due to, Rachel Reeves. But everything else - increased unemployment, bond price increases, stubborn inflation, ballooning welfare, increasing national debt etc etc, - are all the fault of the Tories. After all, the world was created in 2010.

Oh, and Reeves hasn’t been planting the pre-budget stories. They’re all mischievous speculation from thin air by far-right adjacent newspapers.

Top work Rachel and Keir!

I do.

Unfortunately she looks like she's going to halve the ISA allowance too.

In any event a sensible portfolio will have a spread of income and include dividend income.

TBF its the SMEs Im personally more worried about as they drive the economy.

You really do have a very active imagination.

Its just a few more days and we'll all find out.

Only for cash ISAs. There was never any mention of stocks and shares ISAs.

Widely reported.

Shes such an idiot. Press conferences and leaks. The worst managed budget in living memory.

Many things leading up to the last election and the last Budget were "Widely reported"

The vast majority never happened.

The 'press have had a field day with their speculation, as have you!

But i will give you her 'press conference, wtf was that about?

I do often wonder who they have as advisors in No10 and 11.

And that impacts mortgage lending!
Saying "it's only cash ISAs" really undermines the fact that majority of savers do so in Cash not S+S. There's a low level of financial literacy in UK general population and this is a nasty attempt to make money from that ignorance.

Labour were feeding much of the speculation by kite flying, so of course press woukd report it.
There's a reason for previous purdah.

I've seen very little that suggests that the majority of the stories have come from No11, do you have evidence that they all have?

There has literally been dozens of scare stories, most of which are first reported in Tory supporting media.

The things that have happened, such as inflation linked Tuition fee annual increases, weren't spotted early or even commented on.

You think the non cash saving worker should fund the tax break for people who can save £20k (the approx amount needed to exceed the £1k interest allowance, assuming you can find a 5% ISA)

Its costs almost £7 billion in lost tax revenue, £7bn that could go to other more important things, like Defence.

All ISAs need looking at, why should the tax payer fund your S&S ISA invested in the S&P500 ?
