What can an individual do to keep Reform out?

Thepoliticsofchaos · 09/10/2025 22:45

I have a young friend (a university student) who is getting depressed about the prospect of Reform getting in next election. He thinks that the UK is fucked, basically. He's left-leaning, I assume a Labour voter. I've advised him to get politically engaged (so that in the future he'll at least be able to feel that he did what he could). He's not the most outgoing of people, though is interested in politics. Can anyone suggest how he could become usefully politically engaged to try to reduce the Reform vote? Not just joining a party and turning up to meetings, but actually doing something?

If it was the largest sale of farmland since 1817 I’d be concerned. I don’t suppose you have a breakdown of the reason for all those (alleged) sales?

im genuinely not being goady. Im just confused.
so 6000 farms have closed solely because of inheritance tax.

so that would mean 6000 farmers have died whose farm was worth over 2 - 4 million depending on circumstance. And whose farm couldn’t repay that debt over the 10 years interest

"Whose farm couldn't repay the debt?"....do you know how much income many farmers make each year?

This is the issue, too much ignorance about how farms run.

It's not just IHT, it's also the ending of SFI subsidy without warning or consultation.

See we have a declining population of native UK residents, so why do we need so many new houses? If there are fewer of us why do we need more housing?

Anyway, start with re-purposing abandoned houses. Brownfield sites should always be #1 choice for building housing. The government could pass laws for this, it chooses not to. Build flats rather than houses.

Say we continue to build on greenbelt. What happens when there's no greenbelt left to build on? What happens then? When all our woodland and farmland has gone? Where do you build then?

However any increase in population size is coming from immigration ie mid-2024 net migration was 690,000. We are an island, we don't have an infinite supply of land.

You’re including 450,000 students in your net migration figure, they have to be included. Take them away and it greatly reduces the figure by over 50%

we have a housing crisis & our birth rate although decking sharply, isn’t at the point we can’t build 2080 will be the turning point and that will bring other issues. No doubt government won’t plan for the future, as long term planing is never favourable against short term gain

how though would this be different with a reform government in power rather than a Labour government? Surely for environmental purposes green would be a better fit

like I say I’m not being goady. I know how slim the finances actually are in farming and there’s ten years interest free.
and for this to have closed 6000 farms in a year. That’s 6000 farmers who have died in that time, whose farm cannot make the repayments. Who didn’t have a surviving Wife and whose farm was worth over 1m. That’s quite specific circumstances for 6000 farms.

now. If it’s the ending of the subsidies. That’s an entirely different issue and one that obviously needed addressing. Farmers were screwed over massively with the Brexit vote and false promises.

You can look and find things about any party you don’t like, but the environmental aspects of you concerns aren’t going to be found in reform, far from it. Reform are pro fracking - which is terrible for environment and health. Contaminating water supplies, land and habitat destruction.

It is farms being sold off by living farmers because they a)can't afford to keep them running due to their families can't afford the IHT bill when they die so they are being sold off while the farmer is alive b) due to the cost of farming being unviable eg liss of subsidies etc

The problem with wealth planning (like putting it in relatives name and hoping you’ve got at least 7 years left) is you need to be able to afford to speak to someone to make sure you get it right and not stitch your nearest and dearest up when you’ve gone.

if it’s subsidies, that needs to be the headline not inheritance tax. Farmers would find much more sympathy. Especially after the stitch up.

Too many people just blindly believed Labour spin and soundbites around farmers. That's the issue.
I don't think they would get away with bringing it in now because more people have woken up to their lies

I am sick and tired of news stories where women are being sexually assaulted by one of our recent arrivals.

I do not agree with all of their policies but I am highly likely to be voting Reform at the next GE.

Labour are doing the square root of fuck all about it at the moment.

Many feel the same way.
But those on here who live in safe leafy areas, who are left leaning, and will never be affected will be the first to shout you down on here or claim it’s a price worth paying to be tolerant to immigrants.

1dayatatime · 17/10/2025 11:16

The best argument against Reform is that their numbers simply don't add up. Their policies are massively under funded, second only to the Greens.

When challenged on this point Reform retreat to their safe ground of immigration.

Given that the top two most important political issues for voters are the economy and immigration then I suggest challenging Reform on the grounds that their numbers don't add up.

On immigration there is a lot that individuals can do through fantastic charities such as Refugees at Home:
https://refugeesathome.org/

Where individuals offer to house refugees in their own homes. There is nothing that Reform can do about people voluntarily housing refugees in their own homes plus it saves taxpayers money.

One of the many problems I have with Reform and their ilk is that they only seem to care about rape when it’s committed by an immigrant or non white person. They never seem the slightest bit interested in protecting women or children from rape or abuse from white men who are the primary perpetrators of this type of crime… it’s almost as though it’s not about protection at all…

“The Canary is generally unreliable, it’s reporting is sensationalist at times, selective reporting, a left wing bias and a poor distinction between editorial and news contented were also noted.”
I think that speaks for itself with regard to the concept of trying to dismiss those concerned by the sexual assaults by recent arrivals.

You are not getting it are you.
By trying to dismiss those that are concerned by a growing number of sexual assaults by recent arrivals,it does nothing to allay the concerns of those people by this whataboutery.

Also those who defend or support Tommy Robinson and claim to care about child protection should have a word with themselves

I’m in favour of all rape/ abuse being highlighted and investigated not just (but including) those who are committed by people with brown or black skin. Let’s be honest, the press, in particular Uk tabloids, disproportionately highlight rape and sexual offences committed by immigrants or ethnic minorities. In doing so it creates a false impression that they pose a unique threat to women and children, despite data showing most such crimes are perpetrated by white British men. High profile cases like the Pakistani grooming gangs in Rotherham and Rochdale received wall-to-wall coverage and sparked far-right protests while equally large-scale abuses in white-dominated institutions such as the Catholic Church scandals (who had thousands of victims) or the UK football abuse ring (849 victims and 300 suspects) was subject to far less outrage or scrutiny. Seective reporting ignores the reality such as the underrepresentation of foreign born people in prisons relative to their share of the population. It amplifies incidents to fuel moral panic and anti-migrant policies. The result is heightened public fear, eroded social cohesion and entrenched stereotypes of migrants as "sexual predators” this does a huge disservice to victims of rape or abuse and fails women and children.

This is very much the approach of many members of the left regarding Rotherham. "Let's look at all rapes not just those committed by Pakistanis from specific tribes. Let's call out all paedophiles not just Pakistani muslims targeting poor white children"

Trying to dilute and distract. Luckily no one buys it anymore.

Whereas the right seems only concerned about rape when it’s committed by black or brown people. This woman was a child victim of grooming, sworn at and manhandled off because her experience of grooming didn’t fit the racial profile of many on the right. I actually care about all victims of sexual abuse not just those that fit with my own particular flavour of political ideology.
