Preferably in this country (UK) but could be international. One person who seems inspiring, hard working, well intentioned, pioneering or any other characteristic you admire.

That guy who called out Farage in the US. I think he was a Republican.

And Wes Streeting.

No one else

That guy who called out Farage wasn't great. His speech was a load of inaccurate waffle.

Wes Streeting I like though, despite not liking Labour.

I second that. He handed Farage his ass yesterday it was brilliant

MockBatter · 05/09/2025 07:38

I just looked him up. He’s called Jamie Raskin and he’s a democrat and former constitutional lawyer. A quick scan of his Wikipedia entry does suggest he might be quite admirable.

No. He sounded stupid. He said that Farage was far right (incorrect) and head of a fringe party, trying to dismiss him. Reform don't have many MPs but they aren't fringe as they have a significant lead in the polls and set the political agenda. Thats simple.fact. I suppose his comments therfore were for US ears but I'm not American, so....

BoschMkII · 05/09/2025 07:40

I think there are many decent MPs who try to do their best at a local level for the people who elected them at a local level.

Julian Smith, good local MP. He was very well respected and made a huge difference when he was in his NI post during Teresa May’s government. Thrown under the bus by BJ on him becoming PM.

MelonElla · 05/09/2025 07:42

Rosie Duffield. I'm not sure we have that much in common politically, but I admire her courage and integrity.

lljkk · 05/09/2025 07:43

I genuinely like Angela Raynor.

CeciliaDuckiePond · 05/09/2025 07:43

No, I can't.

Lullabycrickets23 · 05/09/2025 07:45

Ed Davies and Wes Streeting

Ah..a self admitted tax dodger and potential defrauder of her disabled son's compensation trust fund. Truly admirable.

Dearg · 05/09/2025 07:45

UK government - none .

Scottish government - I admire Audrey Nicoll MSP, for the fact that she is someone who has worked outside politics ( police), for the fact that she’s accessible to her constituents, and for the fact that she did not take any shit from Stephen Flynn.

I have seen her quoted as saying something to the effect that, having worked in the male dominated police force, she was not about to know tow to any man.

Cannot stand the SNP, but she seems to heed those who elected her.

I agree. Our local MP (Marie Tidball) does a lot in her constituency, unlike her previous incumbent. She also attends very small local village fundraisers, is accessible and engages with her constituents.

mynameiscalypso · 05/09/2025 07:46

I work with a lot of backbench MPs and have a lot of time and respect for them.

Wes Streeting is an awful bully. Have you not read his comments on Twitter? Threatening to break people’s legs and wishing violence on others. I’m surprised he’s not been arrested and charged.

SarahG17 · 05/09/2025 07:48

Now retired but Michael Portillo was probably the best PM we never had. It’s a shame he didn’t stay in politics for longer.

He is the head of a fringe party he has 4 MPs out of 651 seats. You can talk about the current polls all you want but the current facts are he has 4 MPs. Farage is a traitor and was made to look incredibly stupid yesterday

Slimtoddy · 05/09/2025 07:51

Would you consider Mick Lynch a political figure? I think I like him cos he is very funny and sharp.

Can't think of any political figures I admire. You see so little of them and they are all so artificial, it's hard to know what is really going on behind the eyes.

Zonder · 05/09/2025 07:51

Jonathan Reynolds, Wes Streeting, Ed Davey

YelloDaisy · 05/09/2025 07:51

Fortunately all American politicians are fine and upstanding so quite right to call out Nigel 😂😂

All of this plus of course he is far right.

TheendofmrY · 05/09/2025 07:53

David Milliband
Nicola Sturgeon (albeit somewhat grudgingly)
Ruth Davidson (also grudgingly)
Robin Harper

Motnight · 05/09/2025 07:53

Wes Streeting makes public pleasing policies which are unachievable. He is full of sound bites. In the unlikely situation that Labour are elected for a second term he will in all likelihood be our prime minister. And that is something to be avoided.

I say this as a life long Labour voter and a recipient of the results of one of his decisions (to get rid of NHSE). He couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery, doesn't care about the people he is meant to be serving and has an ego on a par with Trump's.

He's not a fringe politician. He.sets the agenda. The current government fights him rather than the opposition. And the polls suggest he's the next PM. You/I may not like this. But it's the truth and that American politician was wrong to suggest he was a minor political figure in the UK. Only a fool would think that.

YelloDaisy · 05/09/2025 07:54

The thing about public schoolchildren is they are taught to speak out and make their points of view known.

Unfortunately few of Labour seem to be from that background and I don’t know what they are ACTUALLY doing whilst they waffle on about our myriad of problems here in the UK
