See also Wilson/Callaghan; Blair/Brown.

Very true.

In theory the UK system is that you vote for your MP and the Prime Minister is chosen by them.

However when you have people like Truss and Sunak taking over and talking about "their" mandate (which was never put to the public) it starts to look a bit creaky and shit. What part of Truss' (or Sunaks) policies did people vote for in 2019 ?

Anyway I don't want to derail a perfectly good thread talking about the death of Donald Trump. I want to savour it while it's legal.

LillyPJ · 30/08/2025 16:09

I'm sure I'd have heard the huge celebrations - crowds cheering, dancing in the streets, church bells ringing etc, (even all the way from America) if he had died.

I wouldn't have mourned Adolf Hitler, I shan't mourn Putin and I certainly won't mourn Trump. As others have said, I'll have sympathy for any family members who miss him.

Yes, this. Expresses my feeling almost exactly, except I would add not having grieved much for Stalin or for Mao Zedong.

Point taken, but I'd say that a more accurate comparison would be with Brezhnev or Tito, where those behind the scenes took their time before announcing the death - they have too much to lose.

The cult that is the left must have heroes. It’s like Christian saints, without the appeal to goodness.

So they delay the news of death, squabble about succession and then embalm their gurus - “righteous leader of the anti-fascist proletariat”, “honourable head of the people’s movement for democratic socialism” etc etc. After that they’re put on display, like saints’ toenails and bits of the true cross. Which the successor demands ultimate respect for - so he can have it next.

For the left, politics is worship.

"There is no justification for the poor ROOM SERVICE here in Hell. I ordered three quarter pounders TWENTY MINUTES and they still haven't arrived. I also asked them to turn down the heat and do something about the smell of brimstone, but so far NOTHING. What kind of clown did they put in charge of this joint - Sleepy Joe?"

I smell a fake tweet - that's far too literate to be real. And where are all the !!!!!!!s ?

W. H. Auden: “Epitaph on a Tyrant”

Epitaph on a Tyrant

Perfection, of a kind, was what he was after,
And the poetry he invented was easy to understand;
He knew human folly like the back of his hand,
And was greatly interested in armies and fleets;
When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets.

This isn't a left-right issue, this is about totalitarianism. If Hitler and Mussolini had won the war, we'd have seen something like Lenin's tomb in Berlin and Rome.

Kreepture · 30/08/2025 16:13

the guy has badly hidden bruises on his hands from IV treatment for something, and swollen ankles.

Most popular reasons are either CHF, or Kidney Disease. He shows signs of frontal lobe dementia in his posture.

He isn't a well man, for all they're trying their damndest to hide it.. time will tell.

Yes I saw him in Tesco earlier.

That can’t be true. He’s a huge Aldi fan

TablePourTrois · 30/08/2025 16:13

Brian dead undoubtedly, though his body is animated to grabbing money, pusies and destroying America's preeminence in the world.😂

We live in hope.

We? Just speak for you. Don't try and add imaginary weight to what you’re saying by saying we. Loving in hope that someone dies isn’t great.

LlynTegid · 30/08/2025 16:06

I'd say everyone expected Gordon Brown to succeed Tony Blair at some point after the 2005 general election, before 2010.

US system is different, the one thing I do like is the two term rule.

Well let’s hope he does die before the two-term rule is a thing of the past.

Radiatorvalves · 30/08/2025 16:15

Alas he’s apparently resurrected himself and. Is…. On the golf course.

Nah he’ll be golfing.

Golf is kind of being dead

What a vile pack of responses. I hope MN delete this thread. Doesn't wishing people dead go against talking guidelines? Some of you ought to be ashamed.

Agreed. There are some vile comments on here.

Petrolitis · 30/08/2025 16:22

Why oh why would you get our hopes up like this @SummerDaysAreTheBest ?

JoshLymanSwagger · 30/08/2025 16:23

He doesn't "work" at weekends.
He cheats at plays golf.

I wouldn't wish anyone dead.

However there are some obituaries I will read with pleasure.

Bollocks. How many dead right wing dictators have shrines and lines of supplicants?

HarrietBond · 30/08/2025 16:28

Trump’s removal of overseas aid has directly led, provably, to the deaths of thousands of people already. I’m not wishing anyone dead. I’ll be the better person. But Trump himself shows zero regard for human life.

Spookyspaghetti · 30/08/2025 16:30

Trump agreed for the White House flag to be at half mast for the children murdered in the Minneapolis shooting. Not sure what his schedule is today but I doubt he is dead.

He’s probably busy complaining about the court’s ruling that his tariffs are illegal and complaining to Putin about the latest attacks on Ukraine and Putins assassination of the late Ukrainian Speaker.

There’s no proof my uncle who I’m going to see later is arrive until I get there. That doesn’t mean he’s dead. Most people are alive for the vast majority of the time.

Kind of a Schrodinger's Uncle, then?

BadgesforBadgers · 30/08/2025 16:32

I certainly wouldn't shed a tear if he died . He's one of worse examples of humanity we have seen in the public eye in the last 50-75 years.

However, the evilness of Trump disguises the fact that 70 million Americnas decided to vote for Bigoted, racist, sex offending, lying, lazy felon.

What does that say about the human race these days?
