A simple question for those of you who voted Labour at the last GE - tactically or for the first time etc., (not those of you who are dyed in the wool socialists).

How are you now feeling about your decision, honestly?

YES!!! They spent so much time crowing and bragging about how we'd all be living in total utopia with their perfect ideas and costed plans and bold brave new world.

What a load of codswallop. Maybe you could supply a link to all that crowing and bragging? I won’t hold my breath.

Er any of the MN threads during the election! And straight afterwards

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 29/08/2025 08:59

I have seen a worse NHS under Labour, elderly and disabled targeted under a labour government and worse off. Right to buy scheme stopped- this helped many people who could never afford to buy. Worse pension scheme. I was always a labour supporter but they have lost my vote, I’m hoping in the next few years there is a loss of confidence vote and maybe another general election. I think it would be very different results this time.

Absolute rubbish! They constantly said they didn’t know the full details of the finances of the country.

And that was a load of bullshit too! They had full access to "the books"..

A good link that proves the issues the Tories left us is & that Lab did not have full access.

Frankly, nobody comes out of this smelling of roses. Not the Conservatives who really did leave a lot for the new government to clear up, and were not honest about the challenges ahead. Not Labour, which knew the broad outline of these challenges, but refused to confront them in its manifesto and pre-election statements. And not our institutional framework, which meant that some of the immediate problems were allowed to fester and were obscured in the official data
Reeves ran through a host of issues, but there were two big ones. The first was the lack of cash available to meet public sector pay settlements of any more than about 2 per cent. The second was that nearly all the estimated £6.4 billion cost of supporting asylum seekers was unfunded, in the sense of not appearing in the Home Office’s departmental budget

Labour inherited an economic nightmare, i would add the 4% in NI cuts, thats 10bn pa to fund.

And they then made that situation worse! Remind me how much is the black hole now?

No, that is ONE think tanks view, according to Sky, others have put it at 15bn.

Plus even on the 41bn figure, its in 5/6 years time, IF we do nothing, the one Reeves had was in July 2024.

Govt net borrowing in July was 1.1bn, the lowest in 3 years.

Er....borrowing in the financial year to July 2025 was £60.0 billion; this was £6.7 billion more than in the same four-month period of 2024 and the third-highest April to July borrowing since monthly records began, after those of 2020 and 2021.

"Rachel Reeves has been warned she will have to find more than £42 billion because of low growth, high borrowing, and U-turns on welfare cuts, ITV News Business Editor Joel Hills reports"

Multiple sources all clearly state the black hole is now bigger than when Labour came in

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 22/08/2025 08:59

Agree @BIossomtoes. The tax commitments that they made in the manifesto are one of my biggest frustrations.

Labour have certainly inherited some major challenges - public services in chaos, a failing economy, massive geopolitical instability, the growth of the far right etc. I certainly wouldn't want to be in charge right now! And to give credit where credit is due, Starmer has done pretty well on the global stage. But he needs to get more of a grip at home and convince us that they actually have a plan. I think they need to sort out their PR as well. They have actually done some good stuff but they're not very good at telling anyone about it.

When you say hes done well on the international stage..what do you mean?

Prebendstreet · 29/08/2025 10:36

Absolutely45 · 28/08/2025 12:14

The Cons had 14 years, 10 of those, there were no crisis, other than of their own making ie Brexit.

2 terms is enough, they had 3 and messed up everything, not a single thing is better from 2010.

Its totally unfair to judge any party after 1 year, have they made mistakes, of course but i will base my next vote over the next 4 years.

Are you conveniently forgetting the financial crisis when the Torys came in? Or covid?

12 years between those two events, 2008 and 2020.

Might help if you read what i wrote?

No, i am correct, its one thinktank that multiple sources have quoted.

The National Institute of Economic and Social Research (Niesr) said weaker-than-expected recent economic activity, U-turns on welfare cuts and forecast-beating borrowing mean Ms Reeves is on track to miss one of her fiscal rules by £41.2 billion in 2029-30

Find me any others?

"Is on track" you know that means IF nothing changes, she has 4 budgets to gradually reduce that.
You and others make out she has to find 41bn in October - if indeed its even correct?

Borrowing for July was 1.1bn, lowest for 3 years, i made no mention of borrowing over 12months - much of which was built in from the previous Government - NI cut, Public sector pay rises, compensation scandals - Blood and PO.

When you say hes done well on the international stage..what do you mean?

Leading on Ukraine
Keeping good relations with Trump
Forging close relations with European leaders
New deal with Europe - very real benefits
Negotiating reduced tariffs with Trump - extremely real benefits, stopped car industry going down the toilet
Closing trade deal with India - yes I know the Tories started this, BJ was good at starting things but poor at finishing anything.

I think they are doing a good job. It's been less than 12 months so I'm not expecting miracles and I don't see the immigration as urgent to be honest because 90% of people who arrive without a visa will be going home.

stargirl1701 · 29/08/2025 22:46

It’s nice to have a normal PM rather than the chaos of The Conservatives.

Indeed, normal people running the country for once rather than board members and Eton alumni

It takes time to fix the amount of mistakes the worries made, I’d hoped KS would be more visible then he has been but compared to the chaotic cash for mates lot had in before it’s bliss…. What do you feel should be different?
