Labour - death by a thousand cuts…

Labour - another day, another calamity…

Utter treachery and deceit from our illustrious government.

The Government’s own estimate of the cost of giving away the British Indian Ocean Territory to Mauritius is almost £35bn, according to documents released under the Freedom of Information Act – far higher than the £3.4bn figure Sir Keir has previously used in public.

Labour ministers now face claims that they misled Parliament and the press with an “accountancy trick” to hide the size of the bill from taxpayers.

Under the terms of Sir Keir’s deal, the UK will give up the Chagos Islands by the end of this year and lease back the Diego Garcia military base, a facility built there in the 1970s that has been used by UK and US forces.

The cost of the agreement has been fiercely disputed. Sir Keir claimed in May that it would be £3.4bn over 99 years, accounting for inflation and other discounts, but the Conservatives said it would total £30bn.

An official document produced by the Government Actuary’s Department shows the cost of the deal was first estimated at 10 times Sir Keir’s figure, at £34.7bn, in nominal terms.

It explains how the cost was lowered by the Government using inflation estimates, then reduced again under a controversial accounting method sometimes used for long-term projects.

The total cost, which ministers refused to release to Parliament, is equivalent to 10 Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers, or more than half the annual schools’ budget.

Ah like the personal attacks I've had?

This is part of robust debate, nothing I've read yet on either side warrants that level of reporting but I will go through the replies to me and get them all reported if that's the level we are at.

I'd take it as vindication that @MyNameIsX has won the argument if anyone starts grassing people up for "personal attacks"(as if one has never been rude to a poster before oneself)

Robust debate Yes.... Pile on's & Name calling No....

Ah pile on by saying I went to Priti Patel school of economics etc?

MrsLizzieDarcy · 11/08/2025 20:29

I'm absolutely appalled at the mess they're making of this country. I dread to think what state we'll be in by the time there is another general election.

Exactly. Starmer's SM police are now on MN.
Free to insult others but can't take it themselves.

Or saying i went to the Abbott school or the Reeves school.... Robust debate, within context... not name calling Thicko Deluded? which you and the pp did....

But really, she made a right mess of that didn't she ? but isn't it odd that you and others refer to Abbot but never Patel or Hammond?

Posters are perfectly entitled to crit politicians of all hues.

As for your arithmetic, if you are happy with the standard, then we are all good.

Traditionally, a grass is not spoken to for the rest of term. Particularly a gratuitous grass.

I never said Abbott or called you thick. I did say Reeves because your calculations were miles out as in 'a la' Reeves. So you retaliated, I didn't report you but will do now thanks 😊

I'm not sure you understand robust debate if you are getting so easily offended. It's obviously safer for everyone to just not engage with you for fear of bring reported.

I ve explained the difference to you...

I couldn't give a 4x about ribbing over a mistake, we all make them, hence i have great sympathy for Priti Patel but name calling? no, thats not on.

If is not stopped, what next? the site descends into chaos.

Its not a difficult concept and one you sign up too when you join MN.

When the election was held we had the fastest growth in Europe and everyone was excited about “green shoots”. The Tories had to manage crisis after crisis, not of their own making (crash under Labour, Covid). It looked like Labour would have a good start with a stonking majority.

But then all this carry on about a “black hole” that was less than a rounding error which it’s their own fault they weren’t aware of (looked like cynical misinformation to me). Then a series of poor judgements destroying growth. Some embarrassing freebies, giving away the Chagos Islands for no clear reason, Starmer being openly mocked by Trump while he stands there with a rictus grin in front of the cameras….

I think it’s too much to come back from. frankly. Only true believers can possibly still stand by them without feeling embarrassed.

It's almost cult like though isn't ie ability to deny/ignore what's actually happening and just plough on with "but the Tories/Farage". Oh and the "free breakfast clubs" 🙄

The Left have an inviolable self-image of being 'the good guys', and more moral than the Right. All based on their policy of spending other people's money on.. well.. anything: no matter how disproportionate and no matter what the end result is. No, it doesn't make sense.

The original drive of Labour was to equalise power between owners and employees, but that battle has long been won. Labour can't let go of their own revolutionary self-image though, so now it's become all about redistribution for it's own sake - to absolutely anyone - regardless of consequences.

What's really strange is that they had the rest of us convinced for a while about them being the 'nice guys'. We were actually apologetic about being Right wing, about seeking to conserve what's good in our society, about believing in fairness rather than the equality of outcomes which levels down to give a worse life for everyone.

The silver lining to this Labour government is that they've made it so apparent how dishonest and hypocritical they are - in addition to how completely incompetent - that I don't think anyone other than complete Labour cultists could possibly still suggest that the Left are more ethical than the Right. And Labour's misogyny and lack of care for vulnerable people - just because they perceive them as lower down the pecking order in the oppression olympics (eg the grooming scandal girls, women in prisons forced to shower with men etc) - make it very obvious that their 'Kindness' is anything but.

There should be no dilemma now for those who think a Centre Right approach is a better way to achieve a healthy society which works well for inhabitants. I have to admit I'm very much hoping that will be the Conservatives who win the votes rather than the newer parties. But either way, the decision should be made actively and thoughtfully, now that the Left are no longer in a position to invent false narratives which they use to manipulate people through shaming and hypocritical and mendacious social judgement.

How on earth did we ever believe that a party which has never had a leader who isn't white and male, has been condemned for widespread antisemitism, allows bullying of MPs following their own moral beliefs (Rosie Duffield) and is intolerant of difference of opinions were 'the good guys' ?!?

I'm worried that Labour are going to go a bit Trump and gerrymander any election to try and stay in no matter what. They won't give up power easily now they have it.
