Why do people like reform?

TheGoogleMum · 02/05/2025 09:23

I haven't been keeping very up to date with politics. I usually vote Labour. I don't really understand the popularity of reform, could anyone explain it to me?
As far as I'm aware Farage doesn't actually do anything when he wins a seat somewhere so I'm not convinced they'll actually do anything? Is it just a protest vote that's gone a bit far?

Reform (and I am from the area where they won the by election) have allowed people to openly say what they think about things. The racist bile on the local Facebook pages is scary. Some of these are people I know.

Are there not any moderators? A local Facebook group would have a moderator surely.

We're not Japan and Australia. We're in Europe and people are coming across the channel from France.

But we are an island. and no longer part of the EU so more like Japan than France. If there was a political to stop thee boats, they could be stopped very quickly.

Because reform voters are racist idiots.

That’s the whole of Kent then?

Around 70% of the French healthcare system is funded through taxation.

If you think Farage would go for a French style system I think you are naive.

Farage has publicly stated he doesnt want it funded through taxation at all. That only means one thing. Everyone will need their own personal health insurance policies.

FYI - In the US the average cost for a family of 4 is 22,000 USD per year.

I thought he said 'general taxation' which allows some leeway.

Yes even in Europe there are competent governments who manage this well (see Poland and Hungary and they're not even islands). Part of the reason for Brexit is that people yearn for good governance and order not the chaos we have now - it can be done.

I don't support privatisation.
I am just saying that lots do, and as it's a fairly big Reform policy, second only to stop the boats, I imagine, that they will get a lot of support for that reason.

Too late! Your GP is already a private company.

I think people are fed up of immigration. I don’t know how we have ended up with so many people arriving who need housing, GP, school places etc. Because people are struggling financially they think we need to look after our own people first.

It’s difficult when people have money taken off them & they see it has been reallocated to new arrivals. We have no say in where they are being placed & I think it’s easy for politicians to just put them in areas that are more deprived.

I wouldn’t personally vote reform but I can see why people are.

I think your average person (not left leaning MN) are fed up of woke policies. I suppose that’s why Trump won votes too.

We had woke policies for 14 years under the Tories? Who knew, eh.

Poland and Hungary as you rightfully say are not islands. They're also authoritarian or moving towards authoritarian governments. Is that what you want?

Don't forget we also give them pocket money as well as all meals. I think it's about £40 per head every week.

Yes, that would be 3 or 4 OAP's having WFA taken away from them to hous these illegal immigrants in 4* hotels with swimming pools and pool tables. British families can't find a house to rent now Serco will rent many btl properties so it will be even harder for families to find a house to rent AND it will inflate rents artificially so renter's will have higher rents to pay. Just wait until Servo hoover up all the PRS housing and families can't find any accommodation. In the late summer many LL's will be selling their btl houses as they can't get them to EPC C so will sell. This will mean up to 1/3 of the PRS sold.

Leaving aside the fact that many landlords may not want to house illegal immigrants, it would be a profitable business to buy up a few cheap buy to lets and give them over to Serco. Guaranteed rental income for 5 years and Serco are responsible for repairs and maintenance.

Have Reform said how they’ll stop “illegal immigrants”? I mean, the vast majority of immigrants are students and workers, so I guess they’re talking about the small minority who come on small boats.

Conservatives tried and Labour are trying - but it’s clearly not as easy as just “detaining and deporting” migrants because of laws and human rights/asylum protections, as Trump is finding out (and we don’t have a politically appointed judiciary). I’m curious as to what Reform voters who are anti-immigrant think is going to happen.

I know a reform voter who reckons they will stop rescuing them and let the boats sink. Apparently nearly 10000 migrants wash up on Spanish shores every year. People get used to the numbers and it stops being shocking pretty quick.

Give it a rest Maitri, you're persuading no one. Why did the tories not stop the boats? I'll tell you why, because they fucking well didn't want to. Remember how quickly we were all stopped from doing all sorts of things in spring 2020? If the same rigour was applied to stopping illegal immigrants the problem would be solved in a few weeks.

I've got 11 btl properties but I'd not allow Serco to have access to any of them. I agree it would be a lucrative business decision. I've heard they take a photo when they take the houses and return it in the same condition. They are paying roughly 125 percent. No void periods and Servo deal with the illegal migrants and any repairs and they furnish it too. I don't think it's fair for these illegal migrants to leapfrog over other families who should have access to housing ahead of them.

I tell you who needs to give it a rest, ignorant people. People who haven't got a clue what they're talking about because it's very boring.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 02/05/2025 19:37

The OP question was:

Why do people like Reform?

My answers, in no particular order, are;

They are entitled to.

Many people are fed up with the two party system which seems to have dominated the UK for almost a century.

Both Conservatives and Labour promised to do something about the immigration, but failed.

Reform policies include:

No tax for those earning under £20K. Sounds fair to me if it gets people off benefits.

Changes to inheritance tax. Sounds fair as assets that people own have paid for out of income that has already been taxed.

Changes to the FPTP electoral system. Sounds fair as the last GE was the most misrepresentative ever.

New arrivals to the UK must have been employed for minimum 5 before they are entitled to benefits.

Because, like MAGA voters, they think that they will be protected by the party. It will target others.
They are wrong.
But by the time they realise that, it will be too late.
NF is very clear he wants a US based health care system - he is being bank rolled by Musk et al.
🤷‍♀️

You’re completely correct “Because, like MAGA voters, they think that theywill be protected by the party. It will target others.

Well the UK can't afford the NHS.
