Why do people like reform?

TheGoogleMum · 02/05/2025 09:23

I haven't been keeping very up to date with politics. I usually vote Labour. I don't really understand the popularity of reform, could anyone explain it to me?
As far as I'm aware Farage doesn't actually do anything when he wins a seat somewhere so I'm not convinced they'll actually do anything? Is it just a protest vote that's gone a bit far?

We put them up in hotels at £145 per night often for 6 months we hilst they make an application for asylum. All the time in the hotel they have no legal status.

Don't forget we also give them pocket money as well as all meals. I think it's about £40 per head every week.

I keep seeing privileged people like you making this identical point so you must have read it in the Guardian/seen it on the BBC. To all sane people claiming asylum from France is not legitimate and is not the gotcha you think. I'm sure Reform will put a stop to it once they get in🙂

Edited

They can try. I suppose knowing the law is a privilege. 😁

Asylum seekers aren't illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants are those who overstay their visas.

Mm Kardamyli2, and which system do you think Farage’s Reform would be most likely to favour … European or American?

Let me think🤔🤔🤔

A lot of them are chancers and economic migrants, I want whichever government in power to deal with this effectively but they don’t

Any law can be changed with enough political will. The trouble atm is human rights law is being "interpreted" by extreme left wing judges. That too can be charged so that v the law works for the majority and our safety and wellbeing is put first like in all other countries in the world run by sane people.

We don't house illegal immigrants.

Servo are targeting LL's to put up illegal immigrants in the town I live in. They are offering to pay very high rents for a 5 year period, and do any work needed in these houses too. The LL would not be told if any of these tenants were criminals. I wouldn't agree to let any of my houses to Serco to house illegals. Some LL's might do though. Even less houses for British people and immigrants who are here legally and work and contribute to our economy.

It’s one of those ‘triumph of hope over experience’ phenomena at the moment, I think.

Once Reform (formerly the ‘bad boys of’ Brexit Party) get in anywhere, they do fuck all as you say. The additional exposure will be interesting.

Yes, as someone who strongly dislikes fascist, racist, lying grifter Nigel Farage, I am wondering if we should be encouraged by the fact they won council seats so early into this term.

Hopefully by the time the next election rolls around there will have been plenty of chance to see what they’re about. Although the trouble is the relatively little power they have at the moment to enact their most damaging policies being dwarfed by the increased influence to peddle their message lies afforded by these seats.

After reading all the nasty posts on this thread I'd like to say congratulations to all the newly elected Reform and independent councillors and Reform mayor and MP. A bit less sneering hatred from LabCon politicians, supporters and voters might have seen a different result.

I think if people have voted for councillors that will get things done, then what is the problem? My local councillors (LibDem and Tory) are excellent and I am pleased that for the most part, they have remained in place.

If people have voted competent people out of council roles just because people are mumsnet are mean to them then they might find less getting done in their areas and a lowering of standards.

I think it is clear though that Reform voters do want the NHS privatised. I guess the best thing to do now is to try and get hip/knee/eye replacements before the next election.

The majority get refugee status. I think everyone wants to stop people coming on boats. It's obviously very difficult.

Good, maybe we can copy the best health systems in the world like France. No other country has copied our dismal model.

I bet my bottom dollar that the European model is not the one Farage would adopt. But we will see what is in the Reform 2029 manifesto.

If Farage really wants to be PM he will gave to be a lot less wooly about his policies than his less than substantial 2024 "contract".

No not at all - other countries manage it ( I don't think Japan has many people claiming asylum and certainly wouldn't give them housing over their own poor and needy).

Yes, I think the timing has been fortuitous. If we were a year or two away from a GE I would be more worried.

You do know there's been a huge amount of privatisation in the NHS for a very long time? GPs for example...

I think European because everyone, including Farage, knows a USA style system would be both extremely unpopular and unworkable.

converseandjeans · 02/05/2025 18:52

I think people are fed up of immigration. I don’t know how we have ended up with so many people arriving who need housing, GP, school places etc. Because people are struggling financially they think we need to look after our own people first.

It’s difficult when people have money taken off them & they see it has been reallocated to new arrivals. We have no say in where they are being placed & I think it’s easy for politicians to just put them in areas that are more deprived.

I wouldn’t personally vote reform but I can see why people are.

I think your average person (not left leaning MN) are fed up of woke policies. I suppose that’s why Trump won votes too.

I've not voted in this round of elections as I live in the wrong place, but I can tell you that my local councillors are all equally bad, so it probably makes very little difference which of them are voted in. Having said that I wouldn't vote Labour under the leadership of a man who apparently needed a court to tell him men aren't women and would never vote snp or their sidekicks the Greens.

I am just saying that lots do, and as it's a fairly big Reform policy, second only to stop the boats, I imagine, that they will get a lot of support for that reason.

We're not Japan and Australia. We're in Europe and people are coming across the channel from France.

Because reform voters are racist idiots.

Lyannaa · 02/05/2025 19:04

They promise things that they won’t and have no intention of delivering. A bit like Trump.
